Each week, dozens of singles and a handful of projects are released in the Christian Hip-Hop (CHH) and Urban Soul spaces. Below, we listen to a few highlights and list the rest for your own discovery. As always, follow our New Christian Rap & Hip Hop playlist on Spotify and Apple Music to listen to all the latest.
Ty Brasel x 1K Phew - "GOD IS THE BEST" 4Against5's Ty Brasel and Reach Records' 1K Phew link up again for a surefire hit. These two exchanged fire bars most recently on Brasel's 2021 album, Destiny: Vol. 1, during the song "Chances." With Trip Lee's The End. album released in March along with several 2022 singles within CHH, synthesizer sounds are dominating the next wave. The production throughout this track rests heavily on synth sounds simultaneous with classic piano ivory keys. Add in sprinting high hats balanced with an ample amount of autotune and the stage was set for yet another banger between these two talented emcees. Rest assured, Brasel always treats listeners to the goodness of our God through his content. Phew never shies away from broadcasting light on the goodness of God either. The track is a call to worship meshed with a vibe laced with energy and bounce. One Brasel verse announces, "Back with the God flow, I speak the scriptures on TV like TBN." Already several listens accounted for, the single is definitely a favorite of tonight's releases. Stream "GOD IS THE BEST" on Spotify here.
Roy Tosh feat. Lynnea - "Don't Lose Heart" RMG Amplify's Roy Tosh returns with only his second single of 2022. This time around, he rejoins Cincinnati's up-and-comer vocalist Lynnea. She was also featured on Tosh's 2021 project We Still Believe. The track begins with the melodic contribution of Lynnea filled with encouragement throughout trials. Then, Tosh provides some of his best work to date through spitfire lyricism smothered in motivation to keep running our race towards the gates of heaven; regardless of difficult days or obstacles faced. Tosh even provides fans a melodic surprise adding to the diversity and creativity overall. From a production standpoint, I'm digging the alternatives to most tracks. This single includes drums with more of a boom-bap feel. Also, the tempo changes between Lynnea's contributions to the hook and Tosh's flow from his heart are welcoming. Dope track, as these two compliment each other quite well. Stream "Don't Lose Heart" on Spotify here.
Tru Talk Tony, Vol. 4 EP by Mission
AOYNOM's (All of You None of Me) Mission returns with the next installment of his Tru Talk Tony series after releasing the original three EPs in 2020. Each volume only contains two tracks, more-so maxi singles for older generation audiophiles like myself. Number 4 offers "Who's That" featuring BrvndonP and "Lost No Step" featuring BigBreeze. Both tracks were produced by Opto Music. Mission remains one of the most underrated and rarely discussed CHH heavyweights in the space. He's one of the few true lyricists committed to his craft. Listeners always receive energy and an onslaught of powerful sixteens each time any new music releases. "Who's That" begins with a superman sample speaking to Mission's obvious talents behind the mic. The track speaks to others curious about the fantastic rhymes they're hearing, yet unaware of the artist; another play on always being overshadowed. Present in the subgenre for over a decade, people still sleep on the raw talent and crispy clean sound Mission is known for. Stream Tru Talk Tony, Vol. 4 on Spotify here.
