One of my favorite aspects of writing these Behind the Song devotionals is the opportunity to discover new artists and speak with them about the biblical inspirations behind their songs. One of my new artist discoveries this past year is faith-based hip-hop artist, Hulvey, performing his hit song “Reasons,” which also features fellow hip-hop artists SVRCINA and Lecrae.

Something I’ve enjoyed in his songs is how he’s unashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in his poetic expressions of faith. A theme Bible verse in “Reasons” could be 1 Peter 3:15: “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.”

Featuring that type of unapologetic truth, and dubbed as Lecrae’s protege, Hulvey, has released his long-awaited debut full-length album Christopher, which has several standout new tracks. I had the chance to speak with Hulvey about “Reasons.”

Please tell me the personal story behind this song.

The song expresses the authentic fears I felt about losing my grandfather and my thoughts about life after death, as well as eternity. SVRCINA sings the chorus that reminds listeners there are many reasons for people to keep on moving forward and to not give up.

Lecrae jumps in on a verse that talks about the trials that life throws at us because of death, loss, and trauma. Even through suffering, we can find hope in Christ to overcome. That’s the message in “Reasons.”

I have a passion: I want people to experience God. People are hungry for hope. And, right now is the time to usher people to God. He is hope. He is the answer.

Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?

1 Peter 3:15 (NIV): “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.”

Proverbs 13:10 (NKJV): “By pride comes nothing but strife, but with the well-advised is wisdom.”

1 John 1:5 (NKJV): "This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all."

Romans 8:11 (VOICE): "If the Spirit of the One who resurrected Jesus from the dead lives inside of you, then you can be sure that He who raised Him will cast the light of life into your mortal bodies through the life-giving power of the Spirit residing in you."

2 Corinthians 4:6 (NKJV): "For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ."

Matthew 5:14-16 (MSG): "Here's another way to put it: You're here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We're going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don't think I'm going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I'm putting you on a light stand. Now that I've put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand--shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you'll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven."

What is the takeaway message?

I wrote “Reasons” to remind people that even though we’ve lost so much: friends, families, jobs, homes—even our minds—that peace and hope are still present. God’s still completely willing to wrap his arms around us at any time. He has paved a way for us to be free.

My album Christopher takes listeners through my life: the journey of being an adolescent teen in high school who sees the importance of community, mentorship, freedom, and deliverance he’s received through Christ over some internal hardships, including anxiety. I started breaking free of my anxious thoughts and worries that I’ve struggled with for years. So, I wrote about those stories.

Lyrics

You can't keep going at a rate like this
Running from your life when you're meant to live
Gotta keep on breathing
There's too many reasons
No, you can't keep going at a rate like this
Burying the past not to deal with it
Feeling so defeated, yeah, yeah
There's too many reasons
To keep on–

Lost my grandad in '07, still tryna cope to this day
I was wonderin' if he went to heaven
Yeah, there ain't nothing I can change
I spent late nights, I was scared to die, I ain't wanna see the grave
I was playing games with my heartbeat
Instead of slowing down just to pray

You've been reachin' for the hand you thought you'd never grab
But Jesus brings the hope you thought you'd never have (have, have)
Tired of livin' in a nightmare, Lord, I just wanna hear You
Runnin' 'round the same circle don't make me feel brand new

You gotta know
It ain't over 'cause you got a hand to hold
Let His peace come rushin' through your soul
Too many reasons for you just to let go
There's hope
You can't keep going at a rate like this
Running from your life when you're meant to live
Gotta keep on breathing
There's too many reasons

No, you can't keep going at a rate like this
Burying the past not to deal with it
Feeling so defeated, yeah, yeah
There's too many reasons
To keep on breathing (oh-oh)
Just keep on, keep on breathing (oh-oh, yeah)

We lost PJ, we lost C-Dub and lost Lil J to these streets, bruh
Got family members on lockdown, I still pray to God to release them
Put my hope in the Father
All these problems just pushin' me harder
When I feel like I'm ready to fall
I hit my knees and start cryin' my heart out, yeah

Shootouts on the corner
Daddy got corona, trauma singin' us to sleep, yeah
God ain't raised a quitter
This is not the endin', we will never be defeated
No, you don't have to fight these battles on your own
God is in control

You gotta know
It ain't over 'cause you got a hand to hold
Let His peace come rushin' through your soul
Too many reasons for you just to let go
There's hope

You can't keep going at a rate like this
Running from your life when you're meant to live
Gotta keep on breathing
There's too many reasons
No, you can't keep going at a rate like this
Burying the past not to deal with it
Feeling so defeated, yeah, yeah
There's too many reasons

To keep on breathing (oh-oh, yeah)
Just keep on, keep on breathing (oh-oh)
To keep on breathing (oh-oh)
Just keep on, keep on breathing (oh-oh)

Closing Thoughts

Hulvey is offering a great example of how one can write and sing lyrics that are unashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Lyrics that reach the lost with transparent confessions of faith.

Many Christians feel that they should avoid the world. Romans 12:2 says we should be in the world, but not of the world, and that we should "not conform to the patterns of this world." However, you can't reconcile that to mean avoiding people altogether. Jesus also commands us, as stated in Mark 16, to preach the Gospel to every living creature.

God desperately wants to fill you with His light and His mercy to make you new. The Lord's glory and strength are found in your weaknesses. “Reasons” celebrates that truth.

Jesus wants to give you Himself, so you can bask in His light of life and not walk in darkness. Before God created man, He created light. God sent Jesus so that you could have a light return. This is your story and challenge: to think about how you’re reflecting the light of Jesus and how you’re spending your time before you die.

1 John 4:19 says God is love. That we love because He first loved us. You can have joy and worship loudly about the love of God in your life. His grace takes away anxiety, guilt, and shame. Know that being His is enough.

If you're struggling with depression, know you can overcome your hardships. That there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. Allow the Holy Spirit to, as Romans 8:11 puts it, cast the light of life into your mortal body. Know with certainty these life-giving words: “But Jesus brings the hope you thought you'd never have. have, have, Tired of livin' in a nightmare, Lord, I just wanna hear You.” Amen to that.
