Meredith Andrews prepares to release her sophomore project in March and speaks to NRT's Kevin Davis about her song "Who Is Like You" from her debut, The Invitation.
Meredith Andrews has been leading worship since high school, currently at Harvest Bible Chapel in Rolling Meadows, Illinois, and is passionate about helping orphans in India and Guatemala. Singing about God's grace, love and hope for the broken is yet another form of outreach for her. Meredith's debut album, The Invitation, showcases powerful vocals accentuated by beautiful piano melodies. The recurring theme of the album is restoration: God invites us to come as we are, regardless of where we are in our lives. All we have to do is receive His invitation.
I’ve been greatly enjoying the album since it came out, and in particular was struck by the Biblical truth of Meredith’s song “Who Is Like You.” It is a reflective praise and worship song and really fits the theme of the album which is that God extends His grace to us not because we deserve it, but because of our imperfection.
Recently I got to speak with Meredith and this is the background she shared with me about the song. You can listen to the entire interview here.
Please describe the background in writing the song "Who Is Like You” and what's the main message of the song to you personally?
The song came to me after I heard a sermon by my pastor based on Isaiah chapter 6. I took notes based on my pastor’s sermon and I found myself writing about this thought that God is baffling and I can’t even explain in words how to reflect the holiness of God. I had the bridge written based on the Isaiah 6 passage, and I found myself actually thinking I needed to be under my piano on my face singing “all I can say is holy.” I took my thoughts from the bridge and chorus and shared it with the worship pastor at my church and he rearranged the song and helped me determine that the song should be called “Who Is Like You.”
What verses did you use in writing the song?
Isaiah 6:1-8:In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple. Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one cried to another and said: “ Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!” And the posts of the door were shaken by the voice of him who cried out, and the house was filled with smoke. So I said: “ Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, The LORD of hosts.” Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a live coal which he had taken with the tongs from the altar. And he touched my mouth with it, and said: “ Behold, this has touched your lips; Your iniquity is taken away, And your sin purged.” Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: “ Whom shall I send, And who will go for Us?” Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.”
How can listeners apply that message in their walk with God?
When we sing about the holiness of God, our words cannot fully express our feelings. When we are in the presence of our Holy God, we can’t help but be changed by that experience. When we get deep into God’s Word, the Holy Spirit changes us. Sometimes we think our worship is about singing songs to God, but worship is a two way experience. God wants us to worship His holiness, but we need to let God change us and work in our lives.
The thought of You is baffling
My mind can’t wrap around You
This human cup cannot contain
Heaven’s glory flood
Chorus
Who is like You, Lord
Who was and is and is to come
Forever worshiped and adored
We pour our hearts out here before Your throne
This is for You alone
The sight of You leaves me speechless
One glimpse and I am undone
This weight of glory stirs my soul
And I fall face down
Chorus
And all I can say is holy
All I can do is fall on my face
And cry holy
Chorus
I recently finished studying the book of Isaiah and I am so moved by this idea of God asking me directly, “whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” and I consistently pray that I have the courage to say “Here I am, Lord send me” when God calls me and Isaiah 6:8 is my life verse. This song is a great prayer and answer to that calling. What is one area in your life you feel that God may be calling you to exercise faith even though you doubt your strength?
