Unhindered keyboardist and co-front man Ben Smith speaks with NRT Contributor Kevin Davis about their new worship anthem, "Father Will You Come."
“We want our music to bring people into an encounter with God,” declares Unhindered keyboardist and co-front man Ben Smith. “One of the biggest obstacles to worship is believers who are self-conscious. We want to kick down that wall, so we get the whole crowd on their feet, jumping around. It is amazing to watch people when they really feel free to worship.”
Unhindered began as a friendship between Ben and Pat in high school. They honed their skills in a youth group praise band before finding themselves in demand at events around the region from Fellowship of Christian Athletes gatherings to church camps and evangelistic revival meetings.
Delivering compelling melodies, prominent hooks, energetic performances, and lyrics that are full-to-bursting with honest expressions of worship and adoration, Be is destined to become a classic example of next generation worship.
From the fist-pumping, crowd pleaser, “We Will,” to the frenetic punk-inflected, “Light This World,” to the piano-driven worship ballad, “Father Will You Come,” Unhindered shatters any preconceived notions of what next generation worship is supposed to look like.
I got the opportunity to interview Ben Smith about "Father Will You Come," from Be. This is what he shared with me.
Please tell me the background in writing the song?
“Father Will You Come” is a song pieced together during a four month period. I first wrote the bridge of the song ("glory, honor, power") while leading worship during an altar call at an Acquire the Fire youth conference. I had been meditating on the idea of the angels and saints in heaven crying out to the Lord as we read about in Revelation 5. Two months later, I wrote the chorus while worshipping the Lord one night at my piano, crying out for God to fill me with His heart and consume me with His majesty. The verses came together in the studio, where we focused on including desires that people around the world are crying out for.
Did you base the song on any bible verses?
Ephesians 1:18-21:: I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.
What's the takeaway message for listeners?
This song has been one of the most powerful songs that we have ever written, and our prayer is that God would open up the eyes of His church, that they might know the powerful hope to which they have been called!
There's a love forgetting my failures
There's a hope that's setting me free
There's a light defeating my darkness
PRE-CHORUS
There's redemption calling
And causing all to sing
CHORUS
Father will You come and open up our eyes Fill us with Your heart, renew us with Your life Consume us with Your majesty, consume us with Your majesty
There's a peace that's calming my waters There's a joy replacing my grief He's the Light defeating my darkness
BRIDGE
Glory, Honor, and Power belong to You
Glory, Honor, and Power belong to You
Glory, Honor, and Power belong to You
Glory, Honor, and Power belong to You
The bridge of the song comes right from Revelation 5:13And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying: “Blessing and honor and glory and power Be to Him who sits on the throne, And to the Lamb, forever and ever!”
I recently finished a study of Revelation and this song really expresses the worshipful nature of what it means to respond to God’s majesty and power.
