NRT Contributor Kevin Davis continues his devotional series examining the inspiration biggest hits in Christian music.
With an awakened hunger and passion, Pillar delivers messages of unity and commitment with the release of their sixth studio album, Confessions.
More than just creating great music, their ambition is to revolutionize lives and bring their fans to a place of complete surrender to God.
During the aptly named Confessions Tour, Pillar speaks from the stage about the importance of confession and makes a special booth available so that anyone who entered would be isolated and have the opportunity to respond via blank confession cards.
"If you went into the booth, it was your moment with God," says Pillar lead singer Rob Beckley. "1 John 1:9 says, 'If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.'"
Catchy first rock single “Fire On The Inside” was co-written with Chris Stevens who wrote the chorus, Pillar guitarist Noah Henson wrote the riffs on the verses, and Jason Roy co-wrote the lyrics with lead singer Rob Beckley.
I got the great opportunity to interview Rob about “Fire On The Inside.” You can listen to our entire discussion here.
Please tell me the story behind writing the song “Fire On The Inside?”
When I started writing the song, people asked me if I was sure I wanted to write a song involving fire, because of our album Fireproof. I started reading more in the Bible about how the Holy Spirit works within us and how the fire works on the inside and I really wanted to write a song about that topic.
Do you have any personal applications regarding this song?
I was focusing on the change I’ve experienced in my life from before I knew God and I was ignited by The Holy Spirit, like a pilot light being lit by God. The second verse talks about the light of God keeping me alive by bringing me out of the dark which I think is a powerful image of how God brings us into the light out of the darkness of sin.
Did you base the song on any bible verses? Any life verse?
James 5:16: Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.
How can listeners apply that message in their walks as Christians when they listen to the song?
The song comes from a passion of wanting to express what it means to live by the working of the Holy Spirit in my life. 100 people will take away 100 different things. The great thing about music is that different topics can speak to people in different ways.
Days were so cold
Nights spent alone
Searching for that something
That I've never known
Held captive by the pain
Caught up in all the shame
My heart just won't stop playin’ these head games
Its like a terminal disease
And now I've found a remedy
You, You're keeping
You're keeping me alive
With this fire on the inside
Now I see the sun
The battle wages on
Gotta watch my back this time
So I know where its all coming from
Its like a shadow I can't see
And its sneaking up on me
You, You're keeping
You're keeping me alive
With this fire on the inside
The song reminds me of some of my favorite rock-style songs recorded by Pillar, including “Hypnotized,” “Frontline” and “For The Love Of The Game.” There is a strong message of faith and hope in the song that can be found from the power of the Holy Spirit. Anytime you are feeling down and need to be lifted up, this is a great rock song to celebrate the gift of life in Christ. As a takeaway, consider the words of Paul in Romans 15:13: May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
