Credential Recordings piano pop/rock band Seabird recently released its highly anticipated sophomore studio project,
Rocks Into Rivers. The group debuted the record live on David Crowder Band’s fall 2009 tour. Cincinnati-based Seabird comprises brothers Aaron (vocals/keys) and Ryan (guitar) Morgan as well as Preston Lane (drums). The band signed with Credential Recordings in late 2007 and released its debut label project
‘Til We See The Shore.
“For this album I think we wanted to mature both musically and lyrically,” says Aaron. “We have families now and are experiencing different aspects of life, and we think that our audience has matured with us as well. We want to continue making songs that inspire people to change and grow. There is a musical progression in these songs, they may be a little less poppy but at the same they definitely showcase our rock sensibility.”
The project’s first single is “Don’t You Know You’re Beautiful,” a great new song. I got the opportunity to interview Aaron and Ryan about the song and we had a great conversation.
Please tell me the personal story behind writing "Don't You Know You're Beautiful"?
The song is about a girl trying to stand up as her family falls down around her, believing lies about herself as though her parent’s divorce is her fault. The song is about wanting her to know the truth. Both of us are married to women whose parents are divorced. It is important for us to let our wives know that they are still beautiful in Christ.
Divorce is an epidemic in America, even among Christians. Aaron told me that he had trouble sleeping for the first year of his marriage, because his wife’s parents got divorced right before his wedding.
Please tell me about any scripture verses that you used to write the song? Any life verse?
Psalm 4:7-8:
You have put gladness in my heart, More than in the season that their grain and wine increased. I will both lie down in peace, and sleep; For You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.
Proverbs 3:24:
When you lie down, you will not be afraid; Yes, you will lie down and your sleep will be sweet.
Here are the lyrics:
Don't you remember
You were happier when you were younger
Things were so simple yeah
'Til the day he walked out on your mother
But now you blame yourself
Because you're by yourself
You feel like it's not gonna change
You're crying on the floor cause you can take no more
Looking for a way to escape
And all this time saying you were fine
And everyone still to blame
Well there you are
You and your broken heart
It's written all over your face
Don't you know
Don't you know that you're beautiful yeah
Don't you know
Don't you know that you're beautiful
I see you laughing
But I know inside that you're crying
Just tell me what happened when things went wrong
We'll try to make sense of it all
Please don't blame yourself
Cause you're not by yourself
I've been right here all along
Don't have to be alone
Because you've always know
Wherever your heart is my home
And all this time
Saying you were fine
And everyone still to blame
Well there you are
You and your broken heart
It's written all over you're face
Don't you know
Don't you know that you're beautiful yeah
Don't you know
Don't you know that you're beautiful
Can't you see what you mean to me
Can't you see what you mean to me
Don't you know
Don't you know that you're beautiful yeah
Don't you know
Don't you know that you're beautiful
Ryan told me that this song makes him think of what Paul tells us in
Galatians 2:20.
I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.
That passage helps guide him and his wife in their marriage. Our hearts are like a home where God lives when we are believers. God cleans us and lives in us forever. What a great picture of how we are made pure and beautiful in Christ. Whether you are having trouble with sadness or sleeplessness, reflect on the promises of scripture that God brings peace and gladness in Him. Most of all, remember that your true identity is in Christ.
