Singer-songwriter Sarah Reeves is deeply passionate about writing and leading songs that keep people's hearts and minds set on Jesus. On YouTube, Sarah's beautiful covers of worship songs like "Oceans," and "Lord, I Need You," as well as original songs, like "Faithful" and "Let It Echo" (the latter she co-wrote with worship band Jesus Culture), have received over 16 million views.

The artist enjoys singing worship covers and writing songs for other artists. But, her personal ministry as an artist is making her own music. Some of Sarah's work with her record label Word Records, include Easy Never Needed You, featuring “Nowhere,” “Details” and “Just Want You,” and her album, Life, Love & Madnessfeaturing “Heart First,” “Motions,” and “Anxious.” I can’t get enough of Sarah’s thought-provoking music. I had the chance to speak with Sarah about one of my top songs of the past year, “Just Want You.”

Please tell me the personal story behind this song.

I wrote, "Just Want You" a few years ago. I was going through a weird transitional season at that time. I had come home from a meeting and I was super upset and discouraged. There was a lot of noise, voices, and opinions speaking into my life and, at that moment, I just had to strip everything away.

I usually write songs when I’m feeling vulnerable. For me, the best songs come from an authentic place before the Lord. It’s how I express myself. So, I sat down at my keyboard and just began to sing these words straight from my heart, ‘I don’t want it if You’re not in it. I just want You.’

At the time, I felt like I had beat down doors that God was saying no to. Doors He hadn’t opened yet. I was trying to make life happen on my own without the leading of the Holy Spirit. I was listening to other people and other voices. I surrendered to God at that moment and just desired His presence because that’s enough. This song came straight from my heart to God.

Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?

Philippians 3:8-9 (NIV): "What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith."

Isaiah 55:8-9 (NKJV): "For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways," says the Lord. "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts."

John 14:8 (NIV): Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us."

Proverbs 3:5-6 (NKJV): "Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight."

2 Corinthians 5:7 (NKJV): "For we walk by faith, not by sight."

Acts 2:28 (VOICE): "Instead You direct me on a path that leads to a beautiful life. As I walk with You, the pleasures are never-ending, and I know true joy and contentment."

Psalm 139:17-18 (NKJV): "How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand; When I awake, I am still with You."

James 4:14 (NKJV): “Whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.”

What is the takeaway message?

I recorded "Just Want You" as a voice memo on my phone and carried it with me in my back pocket. I finished writing this song with some friends from my church, The Belonging Co. We watched it go from a simple prayer to an anthem for so many listeners. It's one of those songs that I knew was special from the moment it was written.

It’s been a cool experience to see how the song has impacted so many people. I just pray that this song will help you shut out the noise and truly embrace the voice and presence of God.

This is a song of faith and surrender. It's saying to God that I want Your ways because Your ways are so much higher than my ways. God has a plan--even if things don’t necessarily make sense at the moment. He’s going before us and making a way.

Sometimes, when we can’t see His plans laid out before us, we try to make it and strive on our own. We need to have faith that God is making a way. His presence alone is all that I need. That’s the true place of surrender.

Lyrics

Take the lead of every step I make
Even if You tell my feet to wait
Cause where You is where I wanna be
The depth of me is calling for the deep

I don’t want it if You’re not in it
I just want You
I don’t want it if You’re not in it
I just want You
Your heart, Your ways
Show me Your face
Your song, Your voice
Break through the noise

I don’t want it if You’re not in it
I just want You
I don’t want it if You’re not in it
I just want You God

Whisper to me secrets of Your heart
I want to discover all You are
I’m leaning into Heaven for a glimpse
And I will partner with Your presence here again

I don’t want it if You’re not in it
I just want You
I don’t want it if You’re not in it
I just want You
Your heart, Your ways
Show me Your face
Your song, Your voice
Break through the noise

I don’t want it if You’re not in it
I just want You
I don’t want it if You’re not in it
I just want You God

All that I see be my everything
All that I dream lay it at Your feet
All that I am falling on my knees
I surrender I surrender

All that I see be my everything
All that I dream lay it at Your feet
All that I am falling on my knees
I surrender I surrender

I don’t want it if You’re not in it
I just want You
I don’t want it if You’re not in it
I just want You
Your heart, Your ways
Show me Your face

Your song, Your voice
Break through the noise

I don't want it if You're not in it
I just want You

I don’t want it if You’re not in it
I just want You God

Closing Thoughts

Daily, we're presented with choices of how to use our time, how to live life, and how to pursue riches. It's overwhelming living for today, not knowing what tomorrow has in store for us. We question our loneliness and look for meaning. But, God offers comfort. Philippians 3:8 tells us: "I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things."

God's thoughts and love for us are deep--beyond our understanding. We cannot think how many mercies we have received from Him. As the Lord knows us thoroughly and we are strangers to ourselves, we should earnestly desire and pray to be searched and proved by His Word and Spirit.

We need to truly be free in Christ and be happy and filled with joy. We're living in a fallen world dealing with the fear and anxiety of the COVID-19 pandemic. If you take the truth of what it means to follow Christ, you know you weren’t made for this world.

We all need to remember that the earth isn’t our permanent home. And, as expressed in James 4:14, life is a vapor. Our freedom from the restlessness of this world will come when we enter the true rest that can only come from living eternally with Jesus Christ.

It's convicting and comforting to know that God doesn't want us to be anxious about anything or to fear or worry. The key to the freedom from those things is, as Matthew 6:33 puts it, to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness. Matthew 6:34 reminds us, "So do not worry about tomorrow. Let tomorrow worry about itself. Living faithfully is a large enough task for today."

This song has become a personal anthem for me to sing daily. By reading the Bible every day, God wants us to have a daily reminder to not be afraid.

“Just Want You” is a transparent, vulnerable, and moving worship song. It's a beautiful offering of praise and worship to Jesus. This song inspires me to pray more fervently, study God’s Word more diligently, and give more sacrificially.

This song stirs my heart and increases my convictions to grow closer to God during my worship and devotional time. We all love our comforts, and this song challenges me to think more of others and to share Christ more than to focus on myself. The cost of discipleship is to make Him the Lord of our lives.

This song does a wonderful job challenging the world's definition of happiness. The world considers finding contentment in having possessions and financial security to be what matters. This song is a sacrifice of praise to Jesus. One of my daily devotionals in trying to grow in my walk with Jesus is to sing at least one praise song every day to Him.

I suggest we all spend time with the Lord. Try praying and singing along with this great song of adoration. The lyrics of the bridge completely break me: “Your heart, Your ways/Show me Your face/Your song, Your voice/Break through the noise.” What a powerful expression of what it means to be a follower of Jesus. He's all we need. Join in with Sarah as she prays out to Jesus: “I don’t want it if You’re not in it/I just want You/I don’t want it if You’re not in it/I just want You, God.” Amen to that.
