Chynna Phillips, half of new Reunion Records' recording group Chynna & Vaughan, speaks with Kevin Davis about their song, "One Reason."
Chynna Phillips, one third of the pop supergroup Wilson Phillips, announced a new phase in her music career last year, joining independently-famed singer/songwriter Vaughan Penn to form the duo Chynna & Vaughan. The group’s debut album, One Reason, released October 6, 2009 on Reunion Records, home to Michael W. Smith, Tenth Avenue North and many others. Phillips and Penn first met in 2007 and although their musical career paths were distinctive and unique, they naturally formed a creative partnership based on their passion to share the hope of Christ with a hurting world.
Phillips says, “This is such an important time in my life. Although I did accomplish a lot of the things I wanted to as an artist and songwriter during all the touring, talk shows and the awards as a member of Wilson Phillips, nothing compares to what I’m doing now.”
She adds, “Nothing is more gratifying as a Christian believer than being able to thread my faith and love for Jesus into my music.”
Chynna Phillips achieved vast international fame and recognition as a member of the pop sensation, Wilson Phillips. With massive radio hits such as “Hold On,” “Release Me,” “You’re In Love” and “Impulsive,” Wilson Phillips sold over 10 million copies worldwide. Yet despite this extraordinary success, Chynna did not experience true joy and peace until she gave her life to Jesus Christ six years ago.
When Phillips was 19, she turned away from a harmful lifestyle. She started modeling and eventually reconnected with Carnie and Wendy Wilson and they formed Wilson Phillips. In 1991 she met Billy Baldwin, and they were married in 1995. She became a mom and took a break from music for a while. But six years ago, she sensed that something was still missing.
Recently, I got the great opportunity to interview Chynna Phillips and we talked about the single "One Reason.”
Please tell me the story behind writing this song?
One night, I was praying in a house on top of a mountain, and it was snowing. With plenty of money, the house, kids, my husband's career in acting and my career in singing, I had nothing to complain about. But I was just feeling empty. I know there was more.
So I cried out to God. I got on my knees and I said, "OK, whoever You are, wherever You are, I need You to reveal Yourself to me because I'm ready to commit my entire life to serving You."
This experience inspired the song "One Reason." Women can easily lose sight of their relationship with God because of the demands of life. But if we don't take the time to nurture our own relationship with God, then the house of cards will fall. I want to be able to help moms prioritize and put Jesus first--before their husbands, before their kids. Jesus first. He's got to be the one running the household.
Did you base the song on any bible verses? Any life verse?
Psalm 91:1-4: He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust." Surely he will save you from the fowler's snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
I lost You a second ago
Why are you in such a hurry when we just need to take it slow
It’s a struggle to keep up the flow
All caught up in the worry when we just need to let it go
Let it go
I’m a fighter and I don’t like to quit
But I got orders from Heaven (orders from Heaven)
And believe me
I’m listening, I’m listening
Chorus: Jesus tell me again
What’s it gonna take to sink in
That You’re my one reason
When the world comes crashing down on me
So hard to see
That You’re my one reason
Here in this prison is the key to this heart
Throw down Your anchor of mercy
Hold me steady through this part
Nobody said it’d be easily done
Wrapped in the eye of the storm
There’s a message for everyone
Everyone
It’s harder to do nothing than to do something
Harder to do nothing, nothing, nothing
And believe me
I’m listening
I’m listening
Chorus
At the crossroads
Need to unload
At the crossroads
Need to unload
I’m at the crossroads
Need to unload
I’m at the crossroads, crossroads, crossroads
And believe me, I’m listening, I’m listening
All of us forget to let God be in control. Stress comes from not living in faith. Life is not about the plans that we make, but about God’s plans. Let go and let God take control. Don’t let “to do” lists get in the way of spending time with God. Are we letting God be in control or aren’t we? Either He is in control or He isn’t, there isn’t any middle ground.
