“Christ Is Come” by Big Daddy Weave is from their new Christmas album
Christ Is Come, an inspirational Christmas record the whole family will enjoy. From classic Christmas standards like “Joy To The World” to original songs like “I’ll Be Brave,” the 12 song record is a perfect way to celebrate the coming Christmas season and the birth of Jesus.
I got the great opportunity to interview lead singer Mike Weaver about “Christ Is Come.”
Here are the answers to the questions I asked Mike.
Please tell me the story behind writing the song “Christ Is Come”?
“Christ Is Come” was the first Christmas song I'd ever written. Up to that time and even still with most of the songs that I write, I approach writing them leaning heavily on my view point as a worship leader in church. Truly there are many ideas and images in the Christmas story that fill up our heart with worship for the Lord. When our friends at Fervent Records gave us the opportunity write a song for a Christmas compilation record, I jumped at the chance.
Do you have any personal application regarding your walk as a Christian in writing the song?
When I think about the fullness of God Himself, in the form of a little baby, sent here because God wants to be with us... He would like a relationship with us. I'm like,
WHAT? How could this be? Emmanuel, God is with us! Incredible! In fact, incredible doesn't even do it, I don't think that there are words to accurately describe what I feel on the inside when I relive this story in my heart.
How can listeners apply that message in their walks as Christians when they listen to the song?
One interesting thing about the story of Jesus' birth to me is the fact that even though prophets had been foretelling His coming for centuries, when He arrived there were a few who showed up to welcome Him, but by and large most people missed it! Even when He was later doing miracles and fulfilling what God sent Him to do. I am so eager to be critical of the ones who missed it, but in truth I wonder if I'd been there if I would have missed Him too? Then that brings up the point that as a believer, I claim to have the Son of God living in me. Yet there are so many ways that God moves and is present in my life on a daily basis and I miss Him all the time! This year one of the things I've been asking God for is to give me eyes and ears that see and hear and do not miss HIM, not only in this Christmas season but every day.
Please tell me about any bible verses that you used to write the song?
Luke 2:10-14 (NKJV):
Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”
Here are the lyrics:
The word of the prophets, centuries old
The birth of Messiah, has been long foretold
That unto you (unto you) now unto you
Christ is come, let all creation sing
God's own Son, oh hail the newborn King
The word made flesh, now dwells among us (dwells among us)
Christ is come
Those born in darkness have seen a great light
The Redeemer of our hearts has been born this night
Now unto you (unto you) unto you
Christ is come, let all creation sing
God's own Son, oh hail the newborn King
The word made flesh, now dwells among us (dwells among us)
Christ is come
Prince of Peace, Yeshua, Messiah, the Son of Man
Holy One, King of kings, Lord of lords, the Great I Am
Comforter, Counselor, Author and Finisher
Divine Truth Revealer, Deliverer, Healer
You are God, Jesus You are God
Christ is come, let all creation sing
God's own Son, oh hail the newborn King
The word made flesh, now dwells among us (dwells among us)
Christ is come
Christ is come
Do you get so caught up in the busyness of the Christmas season that you miss HIM? This song is great to reflect on during our Christmas time of worship and during the year when we spend time idolizing things that aren’t God. I love that Christmas passage from Luke which includes two very important reminders: “do not be afraid” and “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!” Merry Christmas!
