Upcoming contemporary Christian artist Mercedes Nodarse, born in Havana, Cuba, came to the U.S. when she was five years old with her family. She's been singing since she was 10. Her whole family is musical, but she was the one who pursued it as a career. She loves to make people laugh and loves to laugh herself. She's grateful that music has given her so many beautiful experiences and allowed her to meet some great people.

I had the chance to connect with Mercedes to talk about themes in her music, her day-to-day, and her new single, "My Savior."

Tell us about your latest single, “My Savior.”

Psalm 18:2 tells us the Lord is our Savior, protector, and defender and that we can run to Him and He will keep us safe: “The Lord is my rock, my protection, my Savior. My God is my rock. I can run to him for safety. He is my shield and my saving strength, my defender.”

Romans 3:23 says we’re all sinners and we all fall short of the glory of God. But, John 3:16 says through His love, His grace, and His son, Jesus Christ, we are made worthy to deserve Him. “My Savior” is a reminder of that gift He has given us.

Where is music most alive for you during your day-to-day?

I have such a busy day-to-day routine. I find that I'm always thinking of music mostly in my mind and not out loud. I come up with new melody ideas and sing songs that get stuck in my head. Or, I come up with rhythms with various sounds I hear all around me because I’m weird like that.

What are some themes you want listeners to get out of your music?

I want my music to inspire people to be better, to be a light in this world. The logo that we created and use is based on Matthew 5:16 and is at the center of everything we do: “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

What’s next?

Only God knows what’s next, but I’m continuing to write, create, and record music. I know I'm worthy in God’s eyes, but convincing the music industry to see that worth among so many is a little harder. I keep a positive outlook and a focused mind along with prayer and trust in God’s will.

How can we be praying for you?

I’m not good at asking people to do things for me. But there is such power in prayer. I’ve seen it first-hand. I would be a fool not to accept that gift from others. Thank you for this.

I’d ask that you pray for me to continue to keep myself open to God’s guidance and wisdom. That I don’t get distracted by things. And, instead, continue to be attracted to letting my light shine for others.

I ask that you pray for the decision-makers who have the power to allow me to share my music on a bigger scale. And, to change my life to open their hearts and see my worth in their world.
