Each week, dozens of singles and a handful of projects are released in the Christian Hip-Hop (CHH) and Urban Soul spaces. Below, we listen to a few highlights and list the rest for your own discovery. As always, follow our New Christian Rap & Hip Hop playlist on Spotify to listen to all the latest.
His Glory Alone by KB Essential Sound, an imprint of Sony Music Entertainment recently signed the former Reach Records' emcee KB. His Glory Alone represents his debut project with the new label and his overall fourth studio album. KB has collectively given his fans and the general public his best work of art to date through the new album. A skippable track simply doesn't exist. We hear the classic lyricism we expect from KB on "Lil Boy" and "We Right Here." We are treated to the culturally-aware version of KB on "Libre" and "Si lo hare." We hear the socially-versed version of him on "Dark Skin." Also, we get the humble, filled with grace and appreciation of our Lord version on several tracks including "10K," "Armies," and "Let It Reign." Here Glory Alone gives us his collective best material since diving into CHH during his college years. This is quintessential KB. The album will be engaged in album of the year talks from now until the close of 2020 and thereafter.
Promise I'm Not Crazy EP by Byron Juane
Reflection Music Group's (RMG) Byron Juane boards an emotional roller coaster on his latest, Promise I'm Not Crazy. The EP encapsulates feelings of love, pain, loss, recovery, joy, and happiness expanded. The Instagram (IG) roll out for the EP was creative, captivating, and drew in the audience along for the ride. The contents target the male persona and emotional connection during relationships. It's personal. Relevant and beautiful.
My personal favorite from the EP is "Crashing" featuring itstaylormade. The production contains a collection of innovative sounds. The track describes the low-end experience of a relationship. Maybe an "I love you" isn't returned. Maybe it's a feeling of being ignored. Both artists present both sides of the proverbial coin.
I cannot remember the last project in either the CHH or Urban Soul spaces which reached the level of transparency and emotion such as this offering. Listeners are encouraged to dig into the lyrical content to witness the beauty of Juane's exposed heart. If you're struggling in a relationship or just feel unsure about someone you're dating, this EP will especially hit home for you. Definitely worth checking it out.
Miles Minnick feat. Hulvey - "Show Out"
Independent lyricist Miles Minnick and Reach Records' Hulvey team up for a fall classic. Minnick has slowly been gaining notice is some important circles within the genre, mainly Lecrae and Reach. It's impossible to listen and not move some part of your body. The production, the beat specifically, is incredible! Those keys and 808's go crazy. Both emcees remain steadily in the pocket as everything is super crisp throughout. For those unaware of Minnick, check out a track of his titled, "Pluto" too. After several listens, definitely bumped into one of my top 10 favorite tracks of the year. Besides label mate WANDÉ, who else do you see making a cameo in the video?
