INO Records' recording artist Jonny Diaz speaks with NRT Contributor Kevin Davis about his #1 hit song, "More Beautiful You."
This aptly descriptive and intelligent pop effort reveals lyrics, melodies and instrumentation that go far deeper than the stereotypical pop hit. With all songs written or co-written by Jonny Diaz, More Beautiful You
captivatingly illuminates Jonny’s heart-–a heart that is passionate about reaching his generation with the message of God’s love, forgiveness and grace.
Our society often sends the message to young girls that they have to look a certain way and dress a certain way in order to be beautiful. On the title track, “More Beautiful You,” Jonny exposes these lies in a similar manner as Jon McLaughlin’s “Beautiful Disaster” and Chasen’s “Crazy Beautiful.” On Jonny’s #1 hit title track, “More Beautiful You,” Jonny exposes these lies and provides comfort. He will take your dark distorted view/and with His light He will show you the truth.
This is the background he shared with me about the song.
What's the main message of your song, "More Beautiful You"?
"More Beautiful You" is a song written specifically for girls and encourages self-esteem while urging the listener to find contentment in God's purpose and happiness with their true inner beauty. The song aims to tell women they were created by God with a specific purpose in mind. The idea that they need to look a certain way in order to be feel beautiful is completely false. Through this song, I hope to get the attention of females and tell them the truth found in God’s Word that says there could never be a more beautiful you! The song shares, “If you feel depressed with past regrets / the shameful nights hope to forget can disappear, they can all be washed away / By the One who’s strong can right your wrongs / Can rid your fears dry all your tears / And change the way you look at this big world / He will take your dark distorted view / and with His light He will show you truth / And again you’ll see through the eyes of a little girl.
How can listeners apply that message in their walk with God?
While society may make us feel otherwise, “More Beautiful You” serves as a clear reminder that God will take your dark distorted view / And with His light He will show you truth. “More Beautiful You” talks about self image and how we're able to view ourselves through the eyes of God. I just celebrated my one year wedding anniversary, so obviously I have women totally figured out by this point in my life. No, that’s not true at all, but one thing that I have learned from being married, and from student groups that I’ve been able to spend time with all over the country, is that females just have this innate desire to feel beautiful. As a guy, I don’t think I really get that and I don’t fully understand it, but I’ve learned that it’s ok. The problem arises when these girls start going according to what our culture says is the definition of beauty. You have to look a certain way, weigh a certain amount in order to be called beautiful, and that’s just not what Scripture says at all. The Scripture tells these girls that they were perfectly, wonderfully made to fulfill a purpose. Being a musician, when I want to say something or when I want to really communicate something, I write a song about it, and that’s kind of where the song "More Beautiful You" came from. I really want to tell these girls the truth.
For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.
Little girl fourteen flipping through a magazine
Says she wants to look that way
But her hair isn’t straight her body isn’t fake
And she’s always felt overweight
Well little girl fourteen I wish that you could see
That beauty is within your heart
And you were made with such care your skin your body and your hair
Are perfect just the way they are
There could never be a more beautiful you
Don’t buy the lies disguises and hoops they make you jump through
You were made to fill a purpose that only you could do
So there could never be a more beautiful you
Little girl twenty-one the things that you’ve already done
Anything to get ahead
And you say you’ve got a man but he’s got another plan
Only wants what you will do instead
Well little girl twenty-one you never thought that this would come
You starve yourself to play the part
But I can promise you there’s a man whose love is true
And he’ll treat you like the jewel you are
So turn around you’re not too far
To back away be who you are
To change your path go another way
It’s not too late you can be saved
If you feel depressed with past regrets
The shameful nights hope to forget
Can disappear they can all be washed away
By the one who’s strong can right your wrongs
Can rid your fears dry all your tears
And change the way you look at this big world
He will take your dark distorted view
And with His light He will show you truth
And again you’ll see through the eyes of a little girl
“More Beautiful You” is a message to young girls, reminding them that You were made to fill a purpose that only you could do, So there could never be a more beautiful you. It is not a new idea, but it is a truth that needs to be heard. So turn around you’re not too far, To back away be who you are, To change your path go another way. Young women everywhere, listen and be encouraged. I have 3 young daughters, ages 3 to 9, and this song offers a great message of what it means to truly have inner beauty.
