Each week, dozens of singles and a handful of projects are released in the Christian Hip-Hop (CHH) and Urban Soul spaces. Below, we listen to a few highlights and list the rest for your own discovery. As always, follow our New Christian Rap & Hip Hop playlist on Spotify to listen to all the latest.
Canon - "Brother's Keeper" Just before the summer ends, Reflection Music Group's (RMG) Canon returns with a chill vibe adding some peace to chaotic times. Canon released two versions of this track, the original and a piano version. The video below focuses on the piano version. With natural disasters. A pandemic. Racial tensions and injustice. 2020 has given us a handful to cope with. Therefore, we need to ensure we're focused not only on our own mental health but that of our family and circle of friends too. The piano version is mellow, soothing, and reflective; a perfect fit for its content. Check on your family and friends, as it will be appreciated more than you would believe personally.
KB - "Lil' Boy" After two summer releases of worship covers flipped, KB's third single, off of His Glory Alone (9/25), returns KB to his dominating form - pure lyricism. "I'm like a journalist, I'll never give up my source." KB reminds fans why he's posted as one of CHH's elite heavyweights in the genre. KB acts as a mentor speaking to disciples (our youth) about what's happening around everyone and who we can find our strength within (God).
Darrell by Mitch Darrell Independent CHH artist Mitch Darrell (pronounced duh rell) returns with another studio project, his best individual effort yet! For an ole skool hip-hop head like myself, Darrell provides fans with a classic concept album feel complete with skits, a cypher, a freestyle, and climatic storytelling. Through the careful feature selection, he also showcases some of the premier indie talent present in CHH. This is most prevalent on "Rappity Rap (Cypher)." The track and most recent single released highlights quality lyricism, wordplay, witty schemes backed with a strong beat. Some other standouts include "Stuck," "No Turning Back Now" featuring Dondi, and "Black and Proud" featuring MontytheHokage and James Gardin. Overall, the album feels complete from start to finish. Darrell reminds the CHH space that several seasoned indie artists are out there itching for their shot at a quality deal complementing their skill set.
