As Delirious? closes the book on their inspirational and successful career, NRT Contributor Kevin Davis speaks with the group about their song "My Soul Sings."
And now it is coming to an end.
With Cutting Edge, I have greatly enjoyed the Brit-Rock music and lyrical worshipfulness of Delirious?. "I Could Sing Of Your Love Forever," "My Glorious," and "Majesty" have become staples in church services, and as a long-time fan of fellow British rockers U2, Coldplay, Radiohead and worship leader Matt Redman, I have eagerly anticipated every album by Delirious?.
The final chapter in the Delirious? story closes with this-–the release of a truly limited-edition and utterly spectacular compilation, History Makers: Greatest Hits. There are single and double disc options. It’s the end of an era. In this digital download age, I don’t often recommend compilations; however, this is easily the best ‘greatest hits’ anthology I’ve ever heard by one of the premier bands in the history of Christian music.
Stu G’s guitar playing has a place in the history of Christian music similar to how The Edge from U2 has influenced mainstream music. The guitar licks in “Rain Down,” “History Maker,” “My Glorious” and “My Soul Sings” are among the most powerful and signature-sounding in the history of the modern worship genre. Many past and current modern worship artists including Sonicflood, Matt Redman, David Crowder, MercyMe, Jeremy Riddle, Desperation Band and The Glorious Unseen have built on the “Solid Rock” foundation set by Delirious?.
I recently got the amazing opportunity to interview the band in person about “My Soul Sings.” You can listen to our entire interview here.
Please tell me about the main message behind the song “My Soul Sings.”
I was really inspired by what I read in the book Velvet Elvis by Rob Bell. One of the things Rob talks about in the book are those moments where you feel like you are connecting to something bigger than yourself, like standing on a mountaintop and your kids being born. In the song, I mention the mystery of love and the gravity of God’s love. There really aren’t any words to express those moments. Instead, sometimes it’s about the ‘groaning of my soul’. I also was thinking about the hymn “How Great Thou Art,” then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee.
Since you are my rock and my fortress,
for the sake of your name lead and guide me.
4 Free me from the trap that is set for me,
for you are my refuge.
5 Into your hands I commit my spirit;
redeem me, O LORD, the God of truth.
6 I hate those who cling to worthless idols;
I trust in the LORD.
7 I will be glad and rejoice in your love,
for you saw my affliction
and knew the anguish of my soul.
8 You have not handed me over to the enemy
but have set my feet in a spacious place.
9 Be merciful to me, O LORD, for I am in distress;
my eyes grow weak with sorrow,
my soul and my body with grief.
10 My life is consumed by anguish
and my years by groaning;
my strength fails because of my affliction,
and my bones grow weak.
As you close out your amazing career, what’s your main take-away message for listeners?
The application of what it means to live out the gospel is to break the chains of injustice and get rid of exploitation in the workplace. What I’m interested in seeing you do is share your food and feed the hungry.
Open my eyes and see
The wonderful mystery of love
Falling into You
I'm drawn to the gravity of love
We're standing still
In a moment of eternity
Where worlds collide
And I feel the breath of heaven over me
My soul sings
My soul sings
My soul sings
How I love You
Open the page and see
The wonderful history of love
I start and end with You
I'm pulled to the gravity of love
We're standing still
In a moment of eternity
Where worlds collide
And I feel the breath of heaven over me
My soul sings
My soul sings
My soul sings
Oh, I love You
My soul sings
My soul sings
My soul sings
How I love You
During the live CD/DVD, My Soul Sings, filmed and recorded in front of 12,000 people in a Colombian auditorium, this great collection ends with the worship song “My Soul Sings” and has all 12,000 people singing the lyrics in English and Spanish. What an amazing legacy and a great way to close out the career of this legendary band, singing about the biblical truth in Psalm 31:5: “Into your hands I commit my spirit; redeem me, O LORD, the God of truth”.
Sometimes my own words can’t express the ‘groaning of my soul’ but Delirious? has once again captured the essence of the cry of my heart with this song. My soul sings, My soul sings, My soul sings, Oh, I love You. Thank you Delirious? for your incredible songs and ministry.
