Brandon Heath, Christian music’s Male Vocalist of the Year, garnered his third career radio No. 1 single this year with
"Wait And See". Topping Billboard’s Christian AC Indicator chart, "Wait And See," is the second single released from Heath’s Grammy-nominated sophomore album
What If We, following the blockbuster, Dove Award Song of the Year smash "Give Me Your Eyes." Heath first landed atop AC radio in 2007 with "I’m Not Who I Was" from his debut album
Don’t Get Comfortable. Like his breakout song, Heath’s current hit shares truly personal lyrics with listeners, but proves to be extremely relatable to the masses.
I had the opportunity to ask Brandon some questions about "Wait And See".
Please tell me about the background in writing the song "Wait And See"?
"Wait and See" is probably the most autobiographical song I've ever written. But I think that anybody can relate to this song, and be encouraged to know that God has a plan for us, even if we still feel like a failure at times. If we come to know Jesus as our Savior, He is going to change our hearts and lead us into a greater existence other than for ourselves. For me, the last verse of "Wait and See" is really what my journey is all about, "now's my time to be a man, follow my heart as far as I can, no telling where I'm ending up tonight." Most nights, I am in a hotel room and I barely know where I am, but I know that I'm doing what I am supposed to be doing. I just have to wait and see what God is going to do with the rest of the story. I'm encouraged by what He has done already, but I know that the story will continue to unfold and I'll keep learning more about the purpose of my life.
Do you have a life verse or any verses you used in writing the song?
Jeremiah 29:11:
For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
What's the takeaway message for listeners regarding the song?
"Wait And See" is about all of our stories. There has been a triumphant but peculiar plot unfolding in all of us since the day we were born. There's no rush for us to figure our life out, but there is something great in store for each of us. I bet God is excited to show us what that is."
Here are the lyrics:
I was born in Tennessee, late July humidity doctors said I was lucky to be alive
I’ve Been troubled since the day that I got here, troubled to the day I disappear
That’ll be the day that I finally get it right
There is hope, for me yet, because God won’t forget, all the plans he’s made for me
I have to wait and see, he’s not finished with me yet, he’s not finished with me yet
I never really was that good in school. Talked to much, broke the rules
My teachers thought I was a hopeless fool all right.
I don’t know how but I made it through, it’s one of those things you gotta do
I always had a knack for telling the truth.
There is hope, for me yet, because God won’t forget, all the plans he’s made for me
I have to wait and see, he’s not finished with me yet, he’s not finished with me yet
Still wonderin’ why I’m here. Still wrestling with my fear
But oh….He’s up to something,
And the farther out I go, I’ve seen enough to know that I’m not here for nothin’
He’s up to somethin’
So here’s my time to be a man, follow my heart as far as I can
No tellin’ where I’m ending up tonight
I never slow down or so it seems, but singing my heart is one of my dreams
All I gotta do is hold on tight.
There is hope, for me yet, because God won’t forget, all the plans he’s made for me
I have to wait and see, he’s not finished with me yet, he’s not finished with me yet
He’s not finished with me yet, He’s not finished with me yet.
For me, the part of the song that strikes me the most are the lyrics:
"So here’s my time to be a man, follow my heart as far as I can, No tellin’ where I’m ending up tonight". I am often afraid of the unknown and don’t always step out in faith and trust God completely. My career as a medical insurance consultant is somewhat hanging in the balance as I ‘wait and see’ what type of healthcare reform legislation comes out of Congress. Rather than be afraid, I need to trust that God has a plan for me and know that "He’s not finished with me yet".
