The debut CCM release Jasmine Murray EP introduced Jasmine Murray to the Christian music market after previously having been a Top 10 Miss America finalist, Miss Mississippi winner and a finalist on Season 8 of American Idol. Preceded by the hit singles “No Other Love” and “Fearless,” Jasmine’s full-length debut album Fearless features the follow-up single, “Control.” It is an upbeat song that sets the tone for her music ministry, matching her outgoing personality and excitement to be singing songs filled with biblical truth.

“We all have chinks in our armor,” says Jasmine. “Some are clearly seen from the outside. Mine were on the inside; I secretly battled fear and anxiety. I know it looks like I had it all together, but I didn’t. I feel like I'm on a journey now, and it’s a privilege to be able to share that with people. I know this is my purpose. I'm where I’m supposed to be. I want to reach people with the message God’s given me." I had the chance to speak with Jasmine about “Control.”

Please tell me the personal story behind this song.

“Control” was the first song I wrote when I moved to Nashville when I began the journey of signing with my record label Fair Trade Services and we jumped right into the writing process working towards the album. The song was written with Colby Wedgeworth and Ross King and it was during a time where I wasn’t sure what was going to happen next in my life. Everything was just starting for me and I was facing the unknown of starting my career. I was nervous and dealing with anxiety at that time. I think we all struggle with that sometimes, and want things to go how we want them to go and I needed to surrender everything in my life to God. I shared those thoughts that were on my heart and we wrote this very upbeat and fun song that is also very soulful. The song talks about completely surrendering everything to God. We have the way we want things to go in our lives, and we try to control and micromanage everything.

Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?

Romans 8:28 (The Voice): “We are confident that God is able to orchestrate everything to work toward something good and beautiful when we love Him and accept His invitation to live according to His plan.”

Jeremiah 29:11-13 (NIV): "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart."

Ephesians 3:20-21 (NIV): "Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen."

Proverbs 3:5-6 (NKJV): "Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight."

2 Corinthians 5:7 (NKJV): "For we walk by faith, not by sight."

Isaiah 55:8-9 (NKJV): "For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways," says the Lord. "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts."

What is the takeaway message?

Jeremiah 29:11 has been my life verse. I’ve always had trouble with being patient. The Lord has been showing me that I need to wait on Him and His perfect timing. I don’t have to try to manage everything and think that I need to get it all under control. God is telling us that He knows the plans for every single one of us. He has a purpose for each and every one of us. When we really trust and believe that, we begin to realize how the Lord is shaping us and molding us and taking us on a journey with Him. He has ways that He is building that foundation for our lives. Surrendering control and trusting in His Word helps us to give Him control of our lives.

I think as people we have a tendency to take things into our own hands and the Lord is constantly telling us to give Him control, to trust Him and know that He is working everything out, and at the end of the day He wants us to surrender. God wants us to know that life is not in your control and you cannot possibly try to control everything in life. It’s not going to go how you want things to go. Life is full of unexpected moments. The best thing is that when you let go and give God control, it is better than you can think or imagine. I’ve seen that throughout my life when I’ve given over control to God and trusted Him, He comes through every time. A weight is lifted when we trust Him with everything. So I want to encourage you to surrender all control to Him.

Lyrics:
Can you hear that?
My walls are falling down
I wouldn't go back
You're taking over now

I won't try to run
My life I've given all I've got
Then far too long
And I'm not strong enough, it's time to stop

I give You control
Of everything, of all of me
I'm letting go
My heart is free 'cause I believe
Your plan is better than I'll ever know
I would not do it on my own
This life was never really mine to hold
So it's time to be outta control

Oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh

Can you see that?
I'm falling on my knees
Like a white flag
I am surrendering

Now I see that You got me
And I'm not gonna stress
I trust Your ways for all my days
And let You do the rest

I give You control
Of everything, of all of me
I'm letting go
My heart is free 'cause I believe
Your plan is better than I'll ever know
I would not do it on my own
This life was never really mine to hold
So it's time to be outta control

Oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh (Control)

I'm giving You control (Oh oh oh oh oh)
I'm giving You control (Oh oh oh oh oh)
I'm giving You control (Oh oh oh oh oh)
I'm giving You control (Oh oh oh oh oh)

I feel it in my soul
I'll never be ashamed
I'm losing all control
I'll never be the same
Oh oh oh

I give You control
Of everything, of all of me
I'm letting go
My heart is free 'cause I believe
Your plan is better than I'll ever know
I would not do it on my own
This life was never really mine to hold
So it's time to be outta control

Final Thoughts

I can’t get enough of Jasmine’s personal song proclaiming her testimony of faith in God and her desire to follow Him. This song is a reminder that we don't have to be perfect or rely on our plans, but that God knows us and loves us just as we are and wants to hear each of us sing “I give You control, Of everything, of all of me, I'm letting go, My heart is free 'cause I believe." That is cause for celebration as we all have the freedom to be ourselves and He has great plans for us. We need to live each day knowing that despite circumstances, God has a plan for "those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose" (Romans 8:28). All we need is faith, and God will show us what He has planned for us. He's the Author of our lives and knows what's best for us, much better than we do. His ways and His thoughts are higher than ours. No matter what, there isn't a detail in our lives that God isn't concerned about.

This song represents life and includes some great challenges to step out in faith and trust in God even when you want to give up or can't see where you're going. We aren't able to fully overcome our challenges on our own. God gives His followers the supernatural power we need to overcome our challenges through His Holy Spirit. In our weakness, God's strength is perfect! God tells us in the Bible that with faith, we can do anything in Christ. The creative use of biblical language is a highlight. There are no ambiguous lyrics, which is a refreshing way to boldly proclaim what you believe and be attractive to those who don't yet know Jesus as their personal Savior. We know from Isaiah 55:11 (NKJV), "So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void."

I'm completely convicted by the strong lyrics and find immense comfort in this song filled with biblical truth. We can face our daily challenges with more courage and strength because we know that whatever the outcome, He goes before us based on His promise in Jeremiah 29:11: "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD," plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." You can sincerely pray these words along with Jasmine. If you are looking for a firm foundation in your life, make these lyrics your personal prayer: “Your plan is better than I'll ever know, I would not do it on my own, This life was never really mine to hold, So it's time to be outta control.” Amen to that!
