Have you ever asked the question, "Why God?" I have. That is the question that seems to run through my mind anytime I turn on the news to another school shooting or another terrifying moment broadcasted around the world. There are moments every day in these times and our culture that seem to evoke this sorrowful question in my spirit, "Why God?"
The church that my wife and I were attending when I was in the middle of writing for this record was where the seed of the idea for "Why God" was birthed. During a period of time one family's story in our Church began to capture our attention, prayers, tears, and hearts as a congregation. There was a sweet young family with a two-year-old little boy and a new baby on the way. They were sweet, kind, generous, and loved the Lord with everything they had.
The news came in as they were in the late part of their pregnancy that they had lost the baby. A few weeks later, this sweet mom was diagnosed with Leukemia. The church began praying so hard for healing, but a few months later this mom, wife, and friend to so many passed away. This is the moment that inspired, "Why God?"
One of the things that connect us as human beings is pain. It's inevitable, but it makes us human. Maybe the reason we hurt is that we need to know there's a healer. Maybe the reason we can't control our lives is that there is a God who holds our life in His hands. Maybe the "Why God" moments in our lives are exactly why we need God today.
That's the heart behind this song. To meet people in the real place of suffering and questions, and to declare the one thing that never changes and will always be constant.
God, we need you and Thank you that you are with us.
