The debut CCM release Mallary Hope EP introduced Mallary Hope to the Christian music market after previously recording country music songs. You can meet Mallary on Winter Jam this year.

"Now" is her first single, an upbeat song that sets the tone for her music ministry, matching her outgoing personality and excitement to be singing songs filled with biblical truth. I had the chance to speak with Mallary in person at Winter Jam in Reading, Pennsylvania about "Now."

Please tell me the personal story behind this song.

This is the very first song I wrote for my album, and I was pregnant with my daughter Scarlett at the time. My journey of coming to Christian music is a long story, and this song is my introduction as a Christian music singer.

I grew up in Georgia singing in my dad's church where he is a pastor. When I was 17 years old, I moved to Nashville to pursue music as a career with my whole family. I have 2 brothers and 2 sisters. I wanted to be the next Dolly Parton. I signed a record deal, released a country song, was playing the Grand Ole Opry, and all my dreams were coming true.

About 4 years ago, I was in a spiritual tug of war. I don't know if you've ever been out of the will of the Lord, but when you are, you know it. That is what happened to me. I was really miserable in my career, and I felt like I couldn't take any steps forward without being knocked back. I really got to a place where I surrendered everything to the Lord. I was crying, and in the south we call it a "come to Jesus meeting." I asked Him to take music away from me. I've been performing music since I was 9 years old, and I needed Him to show me who I am without music. I asked Him to take my love of music away so I could hear Him better and know what He wanted me to do.

About 4 months later, I was listening to Christian radio, and I had 5 of my nieces and nephews in the car under the age of 8. They were singing the words to every song that came on the radio. I was crying and felt the Lord speaking to me and telling me it was okay to love what I do, but to sing for Him now. I kept that to myself for a little while, because I didn't know if I wanted to step back into music and get hurt again. To show how God works, without me saying anything, my manager called and asked me if I ever thought about making a Christian album. I couldn't believe it.

That's what started this song. God completely changed my desire of what I wanted to do with my life, and I felt like the most important thing I can do is sing about the Lord.

Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?

Romans 8:28 (The Voice): "We are confident that God is able to orchestrate everything to work toward something good and beautiful when we love Him and accept His invitation to live according to His plan."

Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV): "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

John 8:12 (MSG): Jesus once again addressed them: "I am the world's Light. No one who follows me stumbles around in the darkness. I provide plenty of light to live in."

Proverbs 3:5-6 (NKJV): "Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight."

2 Corinthians 5:7 (NKJV): "For we walk by faith, not by sight."

What is the takeaway message?

The song declares how I had put the Lord in the backseat and I was trying to control my life, and now it is time for me to let Him to do the driving. I can see how even when I thought He wasn't there, He was orchestrating everything. He's been with me through everything. Know that we are going to be put to the test, but as believers we are not alone and God is with us.

One of the coolest things for me is getting messages from people that God is revealing to them something that He needs them to see. For me, the reminder is that it is okay to lay down what the world considers success and instead allow the Lord to reveal to you what He wants you to do. I want to stand before Him and be found faithful. I'm taking a step of faith that I'm not sure about, and I want to help people to know more about God.

It doesn't matter what you do in life, whether you are a pastor, a singer, or a neighbor, what we are called to do is to be that light for Him. You may not get what you want, but there's peace when you let God take control of your life. You need to ask God to change your heart, and pray to be content where He has you.

Lyrics:
This is not the place I thought I'd be
This is not the road I had in mind in front of me
Don't see the reason, and sometimes I'm scared
But I know You're leading, even when I don't know where
So I'll put one foot in front of the other
Take one breath and then take another
Lead the way, God, I'm gonna follow You

 'Cause You're faithful every moment
When it's easy, when it isn't
You've never led me wrong, never let go
Your love is strong and Your arms still hold me
Right here to forever
Like a child and like a treasure
From the start to the end, through the ups and downs
You were with me then, and You're with me now

What should I fear, You're on my side
And there's not a mountain You tell me that I can't climb
No matter the struggle, no matter the weight
With You I can handle anything

'Cause You're faithful every moment
When it's easy, when it isn't
You've never led me wrong, never let go
Your love is strong and Your arms still hold me
Right here to forever
Like a child and like a treasure
From the start to the end, through the ups and downs
You were with me then, and You're with me now

Like a light that will not fade
Shining bright always

I'll put one foot in front of the other
Take one breath and then take another
Lead the way, God, I'm gonna follow You

This song is a reminder that we don't have to be perfect or rely on our plans, but that God knows us and loves us just as we are and wants to hear each of us sing "From the start to the end, through the ups and downs, You were with me then, and You're with me now!" That is cause for celebration as we all have freedom to be ourselves, and He has great plans for us. We need to live each day knowing that despite circumstances, God has a plan for "those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose" (Romans 8:28).

Jesus said in Luke 12:49 (NKJV): "I came to send fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!" Before God created man, He created light. God sent Jesus so that we could have light return. As believers, that's our story and also our challenge, to think about how we are reflecting the light of Jesus and how we are spending our time before we die. This song represents life, and includes some great challenges to step out in faith and trust in God even when you want to give up or can't see where you're going. We aren't able to fully overcome our challenges on our own. God gives His followers the supernatural power we need to overcome our challenges through His Holy Spirit. In our weakness, God's strength is perfect! God tells us in the Bible that with faith, we can do anything in Christ.

I'm completely convicted by the strong lyrics and find immense comfort in this song filled with biblical truth. We can face our daily challenges with more courage and strength because we know that whatever the outcome, He goes before us based on His promise in Jeremiah 29:11: "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD," plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." You can sincerely pray these words along with Mallary. If you are looking for a firm foundation in your life, make these lyrics your personal prayer: "I'll put one foot in front of the other, take one breath and then take another, Lead the way, God, I'm gonna follow You." Amen to that!
