A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE WITH JOSH PETERSEN
#3 - I Came To Believe
Our trust in God is called into motion in this week's challenging devotional from NRT contributor Josh Petersen.

And I came to believe in a power much higher than I
I came to believe that I needed help to get by
In childlike faith I gave in and gave him a try
And I came to believe in a power much higher than I

Nothing worked out when I handled it all on my own
And each time I failed it made me feel twice as alone
Then I cried, 'Lord there must be a sure and easier way
For it just cannot be that a man should lose hope every day.'

-Johnny Cash "I Came To Believe"

Do you really trust God?

Do you trust that He has a plan for your life? Do you trust that He is sufficient for all of your needs...or do you just put your faith and confidence in Him when things are going your way?

In the course of your life and daily interactions do you REALLY believe that God is good and has your best intentions at heart, and will provide for you security, safety, stability, and meet all of your needs? Not necessarily your wants, but your NEEDS?

It feels so easy to believe in someone or something when things are going well, because it has no cost attached. It has no action point to step out on a limb of faith and walk hand in hand in total trust and confidence. There is no risk when the sun is shining in our lives.

But what about when the rain comes? And it will come, and come again. What then? In the hardships of daily life do you really trust that God will hear your prayer and comfort and council you?

In John 14:1 Jesus proclaims to us, "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me.

Jesus is ready and willing to meet us and accept us as we are, not as we should be. We do not have to clean ourselves up to come to Him. We just need to come, and have faith and trust that He can unpack our burdens and save us from our selves.

Matthew 6:25-27: "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life”?

Is your life, like mine, filled with doubt, fear, and worrying?

Fear, instead of faith, is the biggest challenge I face each day. I forget the promises that God has made with me through the Bible, and I allow distractions, and interruptions to cloud my senses and judgments.

We have and will continue to talk about God’s faithfulness. The Psalms describe God as our Rock. He is unmovable and unshakeable and will withstand anything that the world can throw our way. He is steady. God never turns His back on His children, and never allows their burdens to be more then they can bear.

Hard times will still come, but He will never leave us or forsake us.

Billy Graham once said to defend his faith in God, "I’ve never seen the wind. I’ve seen the effects of the wind, but I’ve never seen it. There is a mystery to it."

Because we do or do not trust in Christ does not change the fact that he is consistently in Love with us. He is always ready to rescue us from the roadside. He never sleeps, and never gets bored with us and our apathy and walks away. He is true blue, and His work is never finished with us.

The world will pollute our vision with trials, tests, failures, broken marriages, heartache, loneliness, disappointment, confusion, sin, and challenges but God is and will always be a place of rest and safety. There is safety in the shadow of His wings Psalm says.

There is great hope knowing that He is faithful when we have no faith, that He is loving when we are unloving, that He is forgiving when we do not forgive, and that He is strong when we are weak.

I believe that God loves the times in our lives when we cling to Him. We can see his promises in rainbows, healings, and sunrises, but we can also feel his presence in the rain.

"God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world."
–The Problem of Pain C.S. Lewis

Do you trust God to meet your needs today? Do you trust that He is dreaming for you, and shining a light on your path?

When we fall into total trust in God to provide for us, there will be comfort in knowing that my worth and value does not come from other people’s opinions of me. Your value is not in man’s approval, attention from girls, applause from the gallery, or a kind word from a friend.

Your value and identity is in Christ. I can not stress enough that you are a Child of the Living King. He has taken care of the birds of the air, fish in the sea, and grass in the fields, so how much more will He provide for you?
No matter how bad our lives seem at times, Jesus is ready to bring you comfort and recovery.

God has not given us any reason ever to question His judgment, power, authority, or truthfulness. It is written in the stars, sunsets, and more importantly in the goodness and hopefulness of our souls.

"Well this day’s been crazy but everything’s happened on schedule
From the rain and the cold to the drink that I spilled on my shirt
‘Cause You knew how You’d save me before I fell dead in the garden
And You knew this day long before You made me out of dirt

And You know the plan You have for me
And You can’t plan the ends and not plan the means
And so I suppose I just need some peace
To get me to sleep"

- Caedmon’s Call "Table For Two"
