Matty Mullins is a pastor's son and the lead singer of the mainstream metalcore band Memphis May Fire. His band has gained a following playing at countless mainstream festivals and is a recurring Warped Tour favorite. You might know him as a guest vocalist on VERIDIA's song "Pretty Lies" and Spoken's "Breathe Again." Crossing over fully to the Christian market and partnering with BEC Recordings to release his second solo album, Unstoppable, I hear a joyfulness in Matty's lyrics and vocals that is truly infectious, particularly in the title track featuring Jordan Feliz.

Mullins shared, "I know God has me in Memphis May Fire for multiple reasons. I thought this solo project was just for fun, but He's continuously revealing Himself to me by saying, 'I want you to be fully invested in both of these projects.' I believe God can use me in mainstream music and in Christian music at the same time, to introduce people to Jesus and to encourage those who already believe." I had the chance to speak with Matty about "Unstoppable."

Please tell me the personal story behind this song.

I wrote "Unstoppable" with Aaron Rice. He's awesome. When I got to the co-write, I didn't come in with any concept. But when I got to the room we started talking about "what does the world need to hear, and how do they need to hear it?"

We wanted to talk about God's incredible love with an upbeat vibe and with smiles on our faces. We had a funky up-tempo vibe for the track. The song is about the heartbreaking reality of the society we live in today. It's proclaiming that God's love is all that we've ever needed, and ultimately what everyone is looking for. I think that we live in a time where so many people feel like hope is being ripped away from them daily. I think society likes to push Jesus out of the picture a lot of times, but I believe ultimately that it's the unstoppable love and grace of Jesus that everyone is looking for, and He is the answer. It's available for anyone who will have it, and for anyone who believes in Him.

No matter what happens in the world with the President or whatever, it seemed like everyone's eyes were taken off of God, and people were feeling defeated and emotionally drained. I think that His love is the answer, and His love is unstoppable. That's what this song is about.

Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?

Ecclesiastes 5:7 (VOICE): "Daydreaming and excessive talking are pointless and fleeting things to do, like trying to catch hold of a breath. What good comes from them? It is better to quietly reverence God."

Ecclesiastes 3:10-12 (NIV): "I have seen the burden God has laid on men. He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end. I know that there is nothing better for men than to be happy and do good while they live."

Romans 8:28 (NKJV): "And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose."

Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV): "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

Matthew 19:26 (NIV): Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."

Hebrews 11:1 (NLT): "Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see."

Philippians 4:13 (NKJV): "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."

What is the takeaway message?

It's just me proclaiming that I really believe that the love of Jesus is the answer for everything. No matter who the President is, God is still on the Throne. Let's re-focus on what really matters.

The song is for anyone who is feeling hopeless and might be at the end of their rope, looking for something real to believe in. That is the love of Jesus. We proclaim it loud and proud in the song, talking about how unstoppable God's love is. Everything that has happened with this project has been God opening doors left and right, from the co-writing process, to this song going to radio and doing so well. Singing the song with Jordan Feliz was another miracle. I tweeted him and he responded, and he sang on the song and told me he was a fan of Memphis May Fire.

It's so true and so important for us as believers to live in a way that represents Christ. It's not about the words we say, but about the life we live and how we portray His love. God's love is so attractive, and it's so romantic, and it's the only love of its kind that's ever been known. If we live like we are loved, then it becomes attractive to a society that doesn't know Jesus yet. I don't just want to write songs to encourage believers, but also to write songs that will draw in people who don't know Jesus and want to know more about His unstoppable love. I have a large secular following, and it's so valuable and important to have songs like this celebrating the love of Jesus.

Lyrics:
We're living in a broken world
Sometimes I feel like love is on strike
We're so blinded by the hurt
When the answer's right in front of our eyes
When will we learn?

You can't push it out
Can't shut it down
When we look around, denying it is impossible
Through the night
In the darkest times
I believe His light still shines
This love is unstoppable
This love is unstoppable

They're saying that we're too far gone
But I believe that we will see
The promise of unfailing love
A revolution led by one

You can't push it out
Can't shut it down
When we look around, denying it is impossible
Through the night
In the darkest times
I believe His light still shines
This love is unstoppable
This love is unstoppable

Love unstoppable
Anything is possible
I want the world to know
Love unstoppable
Anything is possible
I want the world to know
Love unstoppable
Anything is possible
We want the world to know

You can't push it out
Can't shut it down
When we look around, denying it is impossible
Through the night
In the darkest times
I believe His light still shines
This love is unstoppable, unstoppable
His love is unstoppable, yeah unstoppable
Your love is unstoppable

Regardless of our circumstances, we need to truly be free in Christ and be filled with joy, like Paul and Silas in prison. I love how the music of this song matches the excitement being expressed lyrically. Our God is worthy of all of our praise, and we'll be singing and dancing before Him for eternity. This song gives believers a foretaste of that celebration. One of my favorite things about "singing a new song to the Lord" is that the idea of worship in Heaven is an exciting picture for me, and that's the glimpse that we gain from this high energy song. It delighted God that David, a man after God's own heart, danced unashamed before the Lord. This song is an example of being obedient to that calling to make God the object of all of our worship.

More than just intellectual assent, God wants to be at the center of our heart's desires. We change our minds quickly, but our hearts are more devoted. God can do immeasurably more than anything and everything one can ask or even imagine, and this song is a true celebration of the great biblical truth of "Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us" from Ephesians 3:20. One of the greatest witnesses that followers of Jesus can demonstrate to non-believers to show them the upside down Kingdom of God is to live out the words of this song and have that inner joy, which is supernatural and shows observers of Christians walking through valleys that they have the hope and joy of the love of God.

This song is a great opportunity to reflect on how as we long for eternity, we can show others how Christ lives in our hearts. Sometimes people think that worship is something they do at an event or at church or only through music. We know from Scripture that a biblical definition of worship is a lifestyle of endless praise. God tells us repeatedly in His Word to sing and dance before Him. This song is a great answer to that calling. Join in with the angels and saints, and dance and sing before Him: "You can't push it out, can't shut it down, when we look around, denying it's impossible. Through the night, in the darkest times, I believe His light still shines: this love is unstoppable, His love is unstoppable, Your love is unstoppable." Amen to that!
