The new album Battles by Rita Springer is based on the perspective of walking into a battle already aware that God owns it. God owns every battle. That theme is biblically based on 2 Chronicles 20:17 (NIV): "You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the Lord will give you, Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the Lord will be with you.'"
Kalley Heiligenthal from Bethel Music, who wrote and sang "Ever Be," appears on two of the songs on Rita's album, including "Every Battle." Regarding the album, Rita explains, "We count trials as joyful, not because the trials make us feel that way, but because our God has already given us the power to defeat them."
Thinking about songs for spiritual battles, I've compiled this list of seven songs which have all been featured as behind the song devotionals. Please share any songs that have ministered to you in spiritual battles in the comments!
1. "Every Battle" by Rita Springer

"God owns every battle. You can get off the battlefield. You aren't that good at fighting it anyway, so let God fight the battle, because that's what He does best. The reality is that honestly if you have any relationship with the Lord at all, you know that there isn't one fight He doesn't win," Rita shares about this song. You can sincerely pray these words along with Rita and Kalley. His love is never-ending, and He is our refuge and our strength. If you are looking for a firm foundation in your life, make these lyrics your personal prayer: "No threat of darkness, no fear of failing, will steal my purpose. You're my Surrender, Protector, Defender, and every battle, every battle is Yours."
2. "You Hold it All Together" by All Sons & Daughters

One of the key messages found in this song and All Sons & Daughters' new album Poets & Saints is to not have your joy be based on your circumstances. If you don't know how to word your prayers of thankfulness for what Jesus has done for you, just sing along with this incredible song of faith. It's okay to not be okay and bring your thoughts to the Lord, no matter what you are thinking. Like David's prayers and songs captured in the Psalms, when you allow those words to sink in, they change how you think. You'll be blessed by this powerful song which is a stand-out anthem with a convicting declaration: "You are my strength, You are my song, You are my salvation, You hold it all together."
3. "We Dance" by Bethel Music

Being a Christian father of three young daughters, "We Dance" reflects the yearning for Jesus that I pray for my daughters' to feel in their hearts as well. Songwriter and singer Steffany Gretzinger said of the song, "I think if I could send any message to these women, it's that there are so many worldviews and messages about what love and beauty looks like, but I feel like if there's one thing we have to learn to do it's to get completely lost in that place: in His arms, in His eyes, remembering what He said first to us." A Bible verse that references the dance we are having with God is Zephaniah 3:17. It moves me immensely to soak in the Truth that our God sings over us, then sing back to God: "I'll lock eyes with the One Who's chosen me, the One Who set my feet to dancing."
4. "You're Gonna Be Ok" by Brian & Jenn Johnson
Read the devo here.
We can all make the choice to ask The Holy Spirit to indwell us with His supernatural ability to overcome whatever we are going through. That's what this song by Brian and Jenn Johnson is all about. We are aware of many situations involving people taking their own lives after dealing with depression. Jenn's hope is to pass on the life-giving message of Jesus Christ: "I felt like God promised that if I wrote this song it would save people, and even people thinking of suicide can be filled with hope, even though we don't know what tomorrow holds." Allow The Holy Spirit to "cast the light of life into your mortal bodies." If you are struggling with depression, please know with certainty these life-giving words: "But hope is never lost, hope is never lost, hold on, don't let go."
5. "Day by Day" by Citizens & Saints
Read the devo here.
What's great about Citizen & Saints' "Day by Day" is that the song is congregational, hitting home with the poignant lyrics "I'm not who I was, I am who I am, a sinner saved, a stumbling saint." I can't get enough of the psalm-like confessional nature of the song. "This song is about sanctification and how God changes our desires and changes us. In reality, His love isn't indicative of our response to Him, but He changes us because He loves us. That's really what this song is about," singer Zach Bolen explains. It is a great reminder of what's most important. The song is a daily reminder for me that "even when I'm at my worst, I am still of righteous birth, covered by a saving grace, past, present future debt erased."
6. "Lift Up Your Head" by Laura Hackett Park
Read the devo here.
"Lift Up Your Head" is about submitting to the Lordship of Jesus over our lives and acknowledging that "Love will have its day. Lift up your head, turn your face to the rising sun while you wait, while you wait for redemption to come." The Lord tells us all throughout Scripture to "lift up our eyes" to Him, and this song celebrates that Truth. "Even when things look dark and there's pain and suffering in the world and we are praying to the Lord about what to do, at the end of the day, love wins," Laura shared. "It wins when Jesus returns and establishes His Kingdom on earth, and love wins in relationships." What a wonderful, loving and gracious God that we serve. Remember and celebrate that "love will have its day."
7. "Trust in You" by Lauren Daigle
Read the devo here.
As followers of Jesus, we know that we can trust God's Word. It's great that people are connecting with Lauren Daigle's songs, and my prayer is that "Trust in You" reflects a lifestyle for believers that they are living out every day of the week. The idea of finding our peace, joy and identity in Christ is beautifully captured in "Trust in You." "Even when God doesn't move the mountains or things are different than my heart desires, He's still as faithful," Lauren said. "Thinking on the trials that Jesus walked through on earth, it's not just us trying to wade the waters in life. We experience the same heartbreaks that Jesus experienced." The song compels me to worship and profess my own appreciation for the pure love of Jesus. You'll join in with Lauren as she profoundly sings, "When You don't give the answers, as I cry out to You, I will trust, I will trust, I will trust in You."
