NRT Contributor Kevin Davis speaks with Revive's lead singer Dave Hanbury on their debut album and the story behind their song, "You Know."
Through its music, new Essential Records band Revive is about ministry and reminding people of the message in Psalm 85.
"It says, 'He will revive their hearts.' We love that," says lead singer Dave Hanbury. "We want people to be refreshed, like what our name means, to be revived. It would be great if someone would listen to this album, Chorus Of The Saints, and feel like they could walk closer with the Lord."
A song that really speaks to me on the album is "You Know," sung with Mac Powell of Third Day, who also produced the album. I got the opportunity to speak with lead singer Dave Hanbury about the album and song and this is some of what he shared with me. You can hear our entire interview on the Kingdom Builder podcast here.
"God reminded us to trust Him as we took the leap of faith and moved our families from Australia to America. We prayed on our long flight that we were doing God’s will and for Him to provide as we had no homes and no money. We were able to briefly stay in the basements of the Third Day guys, however we didn’t want to overstay our welcome. We thought people were friendly in Australia, but people in the south in America are so nice. We met a woman in a grocery store in Atlanta and she asked us who we were and we told her we were staying with the Third Day guys. She said 'I’ll ask my friends from my church if they have somewhere you can stay, as long as you want, rent free.' A week later, she called back and set us all up with places to live. What an answer to prayer! The theme of the whole album is to trust in God’s goodness, and to stand up and be faithful, because our God is faithful! God is trustworthy and worthy of our trust!"
Regarding "You Know," Dave said he has many thoughts and stories about the song. "We have to stop struggling and trying to do everything on our own, as God is good and wants the best for those who love Him. The song speaks to people who hear it on the road."
Do Not Worry
25"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?
"Jesus reminds us to not worry, Dave continues. "You can’t add an hour to your life by worrying. God provides for all of us. Particularly at this time of economic crisis, people are stressed and worried. Unfortunately people put trust and foundation in their financial security which is where they find peace. The song really speaks to us and to Mac Powell which is why he sang with us. A woman with 3 daughters who had just lost her husband was at one of our concerts and she closed her eyes and raised her hands in worship as she sang along with the song. She just needed to trust in God."
I have so many dreams for my life
I’m going this way and that
I’m spending so much time worrying
About how it’s all turning out
But You know where I’ve been
And You know where I’m going
‘Cause You see all my plans for what they are
I lay them all down
You keep the sparrow flying in the sky
Why do I question You
The flowers of the field are beautiful
I’m a child in the arms of my Father
So many times You’ve held me near
And brought me through the storm
And You never made me do it on my own
Through broken hearts and broken dreams
My hope in You is strong
There is nothing in my life You haven’t known
I am very touched by this song. It really speaks to me relative to my desire to truly know and be known by God. I love knowing that God knows me intimately and knows what is best for me. At a time when financial stress and looking for security in earthly things is shaky at best, I can lay down my worry and plans and put my hope in God. What a great reminder as we prepare our hearts for Easter.
