BEHIND THE SONG WITH KEVIN DAVIS
#734 - "Starts With One" by Kerrie Roberts
Kerrie Roberts talks about how her journey with taking care of her body has had a profound impact spiritually.

When I first heard "No Matter What" by Kerrie Roberts, I was immediately hooked by the inspirational and personal message. Her release Time for the Show was one of my Top 5 Albums of 2013. Following up her string of recent hit songs "What Are You Afraid Of," "In Your Sight," "My Heart's Lifted" and "Come Back to Life," Kerrie Roberts has released a new single "Starts with One," which has resonated with me since I first heard it.

The song picks up with new mother Kerrie's desire to provide words to express her passion for God and how she feels called to live for Him. "I want every song to leave people with a sense of purpose--a call to action, a realization of a truth, a promotion of hope and healing," Kerrie said.

Her songs are totally inspiring and great reminders to have faith and to allow God to use you, no matter what. Kerrie pours her heart out in every single song and demonstrates how she is living out Matthew 11:29 (MSG): "Learn the unforced rhythms of grace." I had the chance to speak with Kerrie about "Starts with One."

Please tell me the personal story behind this song.

The song was specifically crafted for the documentary, "PlantPure Nation," and I co-wrote the song with Steve Wilson. My background is as a singer-songwriter, and I knew the movie was looking for that type of vibe. We met and wrote the song in one day, and they picked it for the film. We are super thankful. It's all a part of this journey I've been on, from drinking a ton of Mountain Dew while on the road and in the studio, eating whatever I wanted, never thinking about my health because I looked fit, with horrible sleeping habits, and my eyes ever on the prize of whatever I was chasing after and not the price of it. I'm from a southern home, and I ate biscuits and gravy growing up.

In September 2012 I was in a really bad car wreck, and when I was recovering from that, my journey with food started with the film "Forks over Knives." That then cascaded into reading books, watching lectures on YouTube and attending seminars. I've found so much joy in this way of living. There's something very grounding about it, and it all has come together in a timing when I was willing, or forced to take the time to learn these truths. I learned important things about how to reverse heart disease with proper diet, and that is the number one killer in our country.

"PlantPure Nation" is about a food revolution, a life revolution, and I am so proud to be able say that I'm a part of that. If you haven't checked it out yet, please do so. It's on Netflix. It might be weird that I'm so passionate about food, but changing the way I eat has changed my life in more ways than one. The movie talks about cancer research and dairy and how it can turn on certain cancers.

The ripple effect has been one where I question more about everything. I'm now constantly more aware of the impact of my choices and am now more mindful of the fact that every time I vote with my dollars, I'm making decisions that affect myself, my health, the planet, and God's creations.

Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?

Psalm 16:2 (NKJV): "O my soul, you have said to the Lord, 'You are my Lord, My goodness is nothing apart from You.'"

Psalm 60:12 (The Voice): "Only through God can we be successful. It is God alone who will defeat our enemies and bring us victory!"

Isaiah 43:18-19 (MSG): "Forget about what's happened; don't keep going over old history. Be alert, be present. I'm about to do something brand-new. It's bursting out! Don't you see it? There it is! I'm making a road through the desert, rivers in the badlands."

Matthew 11:28-30 (The Message): "Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to Me. Get away with Me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with Me--watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with Me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly."

Matthew 6:31-34 (VOICE): So do not consume yourselves with questions: What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear? Outsiders make themselves frantic over such questions; they don't realize that your heavenly Father knows exactly what you need.  Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and then all these things will be given to you too. So do not worry about tomorrow. Let tomorrow worry about itself. Living faithfully is a large enough task for today.

What is the takeaway message?

You can research so much online about this topic. The main takeaway is about being a good steward of what God gives us, and I need to make more improvements in my sleeping and exercise habits. Once you know this truth, you need to act on it, which mirrors sharing your faith with others. I want to be worthy of that responsibility. I'm in awe of how God has created our bodies and how they are able to heal, and how He has created our earth with so many healthy things for us. God has given us everything we need and we are the ones like usual who mess it up.

It's such a basic thing, food. And yet most of us aren't mindful of it at all. We cram whatever we can into short breaks in between massively busy schedules. Slow down and think. What can you do? Eat foods that bring life and not death, and do it in a way where you share that time with the ones you love. It's basic and yet everything. A revolution began in my own life as I was challenged to evaluate what I value most. What do I truly want to spend my time and best effort on? I hope that revolution continues.

I already know I'm on a crazy unknown adventure being a new mom, but I love that I'm starting it with a different perspective. My prayer for my baby daughter and for anyone is their greatest desire is to know and love God. There's so many ways to do it, with music and the truth of His Word, and even with food. I want to take time for the simple things, the basics, the foundations of life and love and truth. It might sound strange that food is such a major part of that journey, but for me, and I believe it can be for you too, it has been my story. In addition to taking care of ourselves, I think that we're also called to take care of the planet and His creations as well. That's a huge part of this movement, and I wouldn't want to leave that out. It's His gift to us like life itself.

Lyrics:
A single drop hits the ground
Another falls, a quiet sound
Together they start to run, stronger as they come
All across these wonderlands
All along the river bends
Cutting through the mountain side
A drop at a time

It's starts with one
One it all it takes
It's starts with one
One step, you're on your way
A revolution starts with one

You wonder if you're enough
Just two hands, one voice one love
But the truth is beating strong, you're the heart that is its song
All across these wonderlands
People start to take a stand
Spreading like a wild fire

One life at a time

It's starts with one
One it all it takes
It's starts with one
One step, you're on your way
A revolution starts with one

Don't be afraid to be the one

"Starts with One" has quickly become one of my personal anthems, and I hear in Kerrie's stellar vocals a sincere yearning and thankfulness in her heart. I'm completely convicted by the strong lyrics and find immense comfort in this song filled with biblical truth. I am especially comforted by the poetic truth of the lyrics, inspired by Isaiah 43 where Scripture says: "Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland."

This song celebrates the freedom we are promised in God's Holy Word (2 Corinthians 5:17), "if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new." Christians are new creations on the inside. The Holy Spirit gives us new life and we don't have to live anymore with our guilt, fears or worries. We are born again and we need to live as children of God. My conviction from this song is to stop and listen to God and find out what He is asking me to let go of, whether it is an eating habit or something else unhealthy.

We all need to "learn the unforced rhythms of grace." That is Jesus's heart for us. He does not want us to worry. He tells us "His yoke is easy and His burden is light." We all deal with some level of fear, worry and anxiety. I can't help but pray and sing along with all of my heart, mind and soul: "don't be afraid to be the one." You can't go wrong with that advice. All we need is faith and God will show us what He has planned for us. He's the author of our lives and knows what's best for us, much better than we do. Join in with Kerrie and sing along, "a revolution starts with one." Amen to that!
