Lauren Daigle shares how encountering God's love can leave us truly without words.
Lauren Daigle's debut full-length album How Can it Be was my top worship album of 2015, and was preceded by her worshipful and powerful title track which resonated with me since I first heard it. What's especially cool about this album is how Lauren Daigle invites listeners into her life by sharing what's on her heart and worshiping God with every single note.
Now, Lauren has released How Can it Be: Deluxe Edition. The re-release includes two brand-new songs, "Now is Forever" and "Wordless," two stripped down versions of "First" and "Come Alive (Dry Bones)," plus a live recording of "How Can It Be." "How Can it Be," "Come Alive (Dry Bones)," "First," "Trust in You" and "Loyal" have all been featured as behind the song devotionals.
Thousands of worshippers heard Lauren sing at Winter Jam. Currently she is on tour with Hillsong UNITED, where you can hear her sing "Wordless." This deluxe edition is a great way to help tide us over as we expectantly wait on what the Lord inspires Lauren to sing about next. I had the chance to speak with Lauren about her new song "Wordless."
Please tell me the personal story behind this song.
I went into the co-write with Mia Fields and Hank Bentley. They are dear friends who I also wrote "First" with. We were sitting in Hank's studio talking about the awe and wonder of God, the places He is taking us and the fact that we get to journey with Him in the process. Through that process, we get to be the body of Christ, and His bride, the church. We started talking about topics that we see the church at large dealing with.
I brought up moments of when we get overwhelmed with fear when we are on this incredible journey. Mia talked about putting the promise "there isn't any fear in love" into the mouths of the church at large. Fear is crippling. Let's rejoice in the promise that there isn't any fear in love, because God's perfect love casts out all fear. As we thought about that, we started thinking about how in that pursuit of love and the love that pursues us, which is Christ, how awe-inspiring His presence is. We don't have the adequate response for the joy. That leaves us completely astounded and wordless.
The song is about us just being before the Lord, completely in awe of things He has done. It totally related to what I was going through, with how God breathed on the album. So we were talking about being in awe, and she says "what if we were just completely wordless, so that we couldn't even come up with words to express; it's just us singing to the Lord with melodies?"
Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?
Deuteronomy 31:6(NKJV): "Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you."
Philippians 4:6-7(NIV): Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
1 John 4:18-19(NKJV): "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. We love because He first loved us."
Psalm 145:10-12(VOICE): "All creation will stand in awe of You, O Eternal One. Thanks will pour from the mouths of every one of Your creatures; Your holy people will bless You. They will not be silent; they will talk of the grandeur of Your kingdom and celebrate the wonder of Your power. Until everyone on earth who has ears to hear knows Your valiant acts and the splendor of Your kingdom."
Ecclesiastes 5:7(VOICE): "Daydreaming and excessive talking are pointless and fleeting things to do, like trying to catch hold of a breath. What good comes from them? It is better to quietly reverence God."
What is the takeaway message?
I've started singing the song out on tour, and I've been really excited for people to hear this song because my heart connected to it so much. To see not only the recording process, which was awesome, but to sing it live, and see the response from people to this song and getting to sing this over people has been profound. It's definitely my favorite moment of the night.
The stories of how certain songs have connected with people in the most pivotal of times has been inspiring to me. I love watching the body of Christ work. That's been super exciting these past two years. In moments when people are struggling, going through anxiety, trauma or loss, whatever they are going through, how the songs have connected and related to them through the Holy Spirit. On the other side, when I'm drained and wondering if I'm called to this, people have encouraged me with their stories, and it pushes me through in my moments of difficulty. It's incredible to watch the body of Christ function.
Authenticity is the most important aspect for me. Writing from a place of what I need myself and proclaiming truth in my moments is what makes that real. This song is one of those songs for encouragement for me, and for anyone who needs this message. I want people to get in the presence of God and let Him take you to the place where you are in awe and wonder of Him. It's one thing to express their excitement and joy about God, and it's another thing to encounter it for yourself. Seek the Lord for the places He wants you to remove fear, and stand in awe and wonder in His presence. That's His nature, and He's Sovereign. There is no need for worry. His love is beyond measure. Let Him bring you to a place of quiet and silence before Him.
Lyrics: There isn't any fear here
There isn't any fear in love
When You come
When You come
There isn't any heart here
That You don't wanna overwhelm
When You come
When You come
I am speechless, but I can't keep quiet
And I am wordless, but I can't stay silent
There isn't any rush here
So I'm just gonna wait on You
And linger longer
'Cause every time I find You
I'm a little more undone
When You come
When You come
Woah, I'm lost for words to say
Woah, You take my breath away
You move me, and I can't define it
You consume me, and I can't describe it
I am speechless, but I can't keep quiet
And I am wordless, but I can't stay silent, silent
There isn't any fear here
There isn't any fear in love
We all deal with some level of fear, worry and anxiety. God knows that about us. I've read that God tells us 365 times in His Word "do not fear" or "do not worry," enough for a daily reminder to not spend time caught up in ourselves, but allowing ourselves to be satisfied with a fresh filling of God and His Holy Spirit every day. I have been attentive to that concept in my daily Bible study. You can know Jesus personally. Reach out to Him and know with certainty that "perfect love casts out fear."
There are several Scripture passages about standing in awe of the Lord, also reflected in the Matt Redman song "Let My Words Be Few." This song is in that same vein. Be captivated by the reverence of standing in awe of God, allow yourself to be "wordless" and listen for His "still small voice." God is speaking to us in His still small voice, and as believers we need to take time to "be still and know that He is God." This song connects with the saying by Saint Francis of Assisi: "Preach the Gospel at all times. Use words if necessary."
When you listen to the lyrics, "'Cause every time I find You, I'm a little more undone when You come," allow the thought to bring you to a place of worship. There is no fear in love. He wants a relationship with us, and He is rejoicing over us with singing, which blows me away every time I think about that concept. Sing back to Him "I am speechless, but I can't keep quiet, and I am wordless, but I can't stay silent."
This song is all about trusting in God and confessing to Him and others when you fail or struggle. Lay those burdens at the feet of Jesus, and He'll take them from you and release you. God wants to hear from you. What a powerful expression of what it means to accept that God never leaves or forsakes us as His followers. He is all we need. Join in with Lauren as she prays to Jesus: "there isn't any fear here, there isn't any fear in love." Amen to that!
