In his second blog with NewReleaseToday, Pastor Jason Becker challenges us to think about what is truly lasting in our lives.
So I have a home office. Do you have a home office? There was a time when having an office in your home seemed really fancy. However, home offices now seem the norm. Interestingly enough, it seems to me that home offices, most likely, go unused these days. The advent of the laptop, for instance, has me doing work at home in my PJs in bed versus in my office.
With that said, I have worked hard to decorate my home office with things that make me look really cool. On my bookshelves I placed the coolest books facing outwards: the "hippest" pastors first, the "cooler topics" rising to the top. Worn out Bibles are a must. On the walls, cool posters, accomplishments. Heck, I even have a wall with guitars hanging on them. Dabbling in this "music biz," I figured that would look cool. Crazy thing is, I don't play the guitar (don't tell anyone).
All this stuff just collects dust. It all looks cool, but what am I doing with these tools? Sure, I have read the books, but do I continue to apply the principles to my life? I have worn some of the bibles out, but do I continue to read through my notes, underlined passages, and prayers written on the edges? I have the guitars hanging, and yes I did teach myself some worship songs to sing to the kids, but do I still praise Him with those words?
What am I doing with all these tools that I have collected in my faith life? What are you doing with these tools that you have collected? Have I used them up just to collect dust now? God is worthy of our praise, and He is worth our praise. Those prayers written down, questions answered in the devotionals, and notes taken from the books gave more to us than just pondering. They should stir our soul for a deeper relationship with Him.
So let's dust off the shelves. Crack open the old devotionals. Re-trace our steps so we can move our relationship that much closer to Jesus.
If you're looking for a good way to start, maybe my friends from Atlanta in Third Day can help with their song "Your Love O Lord," taken from Psalm 36.
"Your Unfailing Love, O Lord, is vast as the heavens; your faithfulness reaches beyond the clouds. Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, Your Justice like the ocean depths." (Psalm 36:5-6 NLT)
That is a God that I want to know more about. Let's keep leaning into Jesus.
Pastor Jason Becker began his career after school at the University of Georgia, in a family business in metro Atlanta and oversaw exponential growth that eventually allowed the family to sell the company. It was after this sale and playing golf 6 days a week that Jesus ruined Jason's golf game and broke his heart for the things that broke His. Pastor Jason was part of an intercity church plant for the last three years in Little 5 Points Atlanta, Georgia working in addiction recovery, and is currently President of Rcity Records. Aside from counseling and speaking at ministry events, he and his family currently attend Buckhead Church in Atlanta, GA. He continues to invest in businesses that serve people and improve the communities around us.
