BEHIND THE SONG WITH KEVIN DAVIS
#665 - "Can't Hold Me Down" by All Things New
Garrett Hornbuckle of All Things New talks about the truth of our unshakable joy in Christ.

All Things New recently released their sophomore album, The Good News, on September 25. This album follows their self-titled debut in 2013, which featured the hit songs "New Man" and "Washed Over Me." In support of this new album, the band is currently promoting their radio single "Can't Hold Me Down." Lead singer Garrett Hornbuckle has shared that this single was inspired by a sermon based on Romans 16:20, "The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet."

"No matter how hard the battle is that we are facing, we will never lose with God on our side. Our God is undefeated. A lot of people, myself included, have listened to the lies of the Devil and believed them. The Enemy says that we are not good enough, but Romans 8:16-17 declares that we are children of God and co-heirs with Christ. My heart is that we will all grasp that truth and live it out-- nothing can hold us down." I had the chance to speak with Garrett about "Can't Hold Me Down."

Please tell me the personal story behind this song.

I was at a church service, and the Pastor shared in his sermon about how the Devil can't hold you down. I started to think about that statement and what he was speaking about. We all have things we struggle with and face in life. Some things are good, and some things are bad, and we have some hard days, but the reality is that if we are in Christ, nothing can hold us down. That's something we can stand on and we can have confidence about. We can know that no matter what we face or go through, it's not going to hold us down. We have Christ in us, and therefore we have a freedom that is unexplainable and a joy that is everlasting.

Even when we have hard days, we have a joy that can never be taken away and a freedom that comes from Jesus. We wanted to write a song that really declares the greatness of God. The first line of the chorus is "my God is undefeated, love has won my freedom." The song talks about how powerful God is. The enemy is real, and God is real, and the fact is that if you are a Christian, you're constantly being attacked in a spiritual war. But God is so much bigger and so much greater than all things. Because of all that, nothing can hold us down. That's where the song came from.

Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?

2 Corinthians 5:17 (NKJV): Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

Ephesians 6:13-17 (VOICE): And this is why you need to be head-to-toe in the full armor of God: so you can resist during these evil days and be fully prepared to hold your ground. Yes, stand--truth banded around your waist, righteousness as your chest plate, and feet protected in preparation to proclaim the good news of peace. Don't forget to raise the shield of faith above all else, so you will be able to extinguish flaming spears hurled at you from the wicked one. Take also the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

Romans 8:16-17 (NKJV): The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs--heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.

Romans 8:28 (NIV): And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.

Romans 8:31 (NKJV): "What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

Romans 16:20 (NKJV): And the God of peace will crush Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.

Philippians 4:11-13 (NKJV): Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

What is the takeaway message of the song and album?

When we first started the band, we were so madly in love with being able to play music and share the Gospel. In getting signed and touring, we lost a little bit of focus on that. This album is called The Good News, and is a good reminder to us of why we do this. The sole purpose for why we do this is to share the Good News of Jesus.

We know we live in a broken world, and there are a lot of lost people out there. We know that people can connect with music in a powerful way, and we want to share about Jesus in any way that we can. With this album, we've boiled it down to what we are called to do as Christians. Whether you are flipping burgers or mopping floors, or whatever you do, that's your calling to share the Good News. That's what our ministry is about.

This album is about God's unfailing love, and how because of God's grace we are changed. My hope is that people hear these songs and they are encouraged, and that some deeper questions are asked. We have some songs that sonically may appeal to people who don't know Jesus, and hopefully they want to know more about Him and want to know what we are singing about. We're not preaching from the mountaintops. We're right here with you on this journey of faith. We can live a life full of freedom and grace. I'm following Jesus every day and holding on tight.

Lyrics:
Get off me devil
Don't need your trouble
I know you come like a thief in the night

I've got the Good News
And I'm here to tell you
No you're never gonna win this fight

My God is undefeated
Love has won my freedom
You can't hold me down

You'll never steal my joy, No
The grave has been destroyed
You can't hold me down

Oh yeah, na na na na na

Get under my feet
Your lies are so weak
No I'm never gonna run and hide

Dressed in the armor
Of God my Father
And He's fighting for His child

Through many dangers, toils, and snares
I have already come
'Tis Grace that brought me safe thus far
And Grace will lead me home

Regardless of our circumstances, we need to truly be free in Christ and be filled with joy, like Paul and Silas in prison. One of the greatest witnesses that followers of Jesus can demonstrate to non-believers to show them the upside down Kingdom of God is to live out the words of this song and have that inner-joy, which is supernatural. God doesn't make bad things happen to us. He came to give us life and to live with Him eternally by trusting in Jesus alone for our salvation.

Persecution of our church in America is coming. Certainly we face daily spiritual warfare. The Lord also tells us about sifting wheat and chaff in His Word. This album lights a fire in Christians to know and proclaim what you stand for, no matter what the world tells you to do. Don't compromise. Don't forsake God or be ashamed of the Gospel. Stand up for what you believe. There is an infectious urgency to this song. As we live in these last days, it is very important to think about what you would be found doing if the Lord were to return today.

This is one of my favorite songs of the year. I love when artists are inspired by God's Word from the Bible, in this case a sermon based on Scripture, and turn it into a great and catchy song filled with truth. I sing this song with all of my heart.

Dream big, live for God and know that He has great plans for you. It has been said that people remember songs longer than they remember sermons, and this is a truly edifying and uplifting offering of praise and adoration of our King, Jesus. Join in with the band and sing the song of the redeemed: "My God is undefeated, love has won my freedom. You can't hold me down, you'll never steal my joy. No, the grave has been destroyed, you can't hold me down." Amen to that!
