I had the privilege to correspond with Randall Goodgame about a couple of the songs he’s written for Caedmon’s Call including “There’s Only One (Holy One),” which is based on Psalm 23 and also “There Is A Reason” which is based on Proverbs 3:5,6: Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. And also 2nd Corinthians 3:18: And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
I have greatly enjoyed Caedmon’s Call since their 1997 self-titled album and “This World”, “Faith My Eyes”, “Thankful” and “Hands of the Potter” are some of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands. What I really like about “There Is A Reason” is how the song ties several aspects of scripture together in a very catchy melody. From the Ecclesiastes 3 “a time to live, a time to die” reference to the Proverbs 3 “trust in the Lord” reference right through to Paul’s words to the Corinthians regarding transformation reflecting the Lord’s glory, this song takes you on a biblical journey with the bottom line being that “He makes all things good”. This is very encouraging to me as I often struggle to know God’s purpose in my life and desperately want to reflect His glory.
Randall Goodgame on “There Is A Reason”: “This song is at once a confession and a proclamation of faith. If we are honest, we who testify to a loving God must also testify to our bewilderment in the face of the pain and suffering ever-present in this world of His. You certainly don't have to travel to the Third World to ask "Why, Lord?" However, that question is often the doorway into deeper relationship with Him. And that is always good. In the end, though, we find true life and peace in Christ when we drop our questions and respond to the suffering world around us (and inside us) by receiving Christ and his grace and mercy in each moment. We truly live in the face of trials when we acknowledge him (Proverbs 3:5,6) and allow him to define himself through us. We receive his mercy, and then we reflect His glory.” (2 Cor 3:18)
Late at night I wonder why
Sometimes I wonder why
Sometimes I'm so tired
I don't even try
Seems everything around me fails
But I hold on to the promise
That there is a reason
Late at night, the darkness makes it hard to see
The history of the saints who've gone in front of me
Through famine, plague and disbelief
His hand was still upon them
'Cause there is a reason
There is a reason
He makes all things good
He makes all things good
There's a time to live and a time to die
A time for wonder and to wonder why
'Cause there is a reason
There is a reason
I believe in a God who sent His only son
To walk upon this world and give His life for us
With blood and tears on a long, dark night
We know that He believed
That there is a reason
There is a reason
For the lonely nights
And broken hearts
The widow's mite
In the rich man's hand
And the continent
Whose blood becomes a traitor
For the child afraid to close their eyes
The prayers that seem unanswered
There is a reason
There is a reason
Thank you Randall and Caedmon’s Call for bringing out this biblical truth. As stated in the song, Jesus gave His life for us and we know that He believed in God’s purpose. We as believers are all eternally grateful that Jesus relied on God’s will and reminds us that “there is a reason” for everything under Heaven. As His children we can all rest in the knowledge that we can fully trust in our God and lean not on our own understanding.
