BEHIND THE SONG WITH KEVIN DAVIS
#582 - "Resolution" by Everfound
Nikita from Everfound talks about the powerful chance to change that Christ offers to us.

This fall Everfound released their Christmas album Resolution. The album features the Christmas classics "Carol of the Bells," "Silent Night" and "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" alongside their original songs "Resolution" and "I Want Christmas Back."

What's especially notable about the Russian born brothers' collection of songs is that they have recorded songs that are all Christ-centered, recognizing the holiness and reverence of this joyous season. Whether you are a follower of Jesus or just someone who enjoys good music, this album will minister to your soul, lift your spirit and most importantly focus your attention on Christ. I had the chance to speak with Nikita about "Resolution."

Please tell me about the background message.

My brothers and I wrote this song together. We were talking about how oftentimes we think that a resolution is for New Year's, but it is really so much bigger than that. It is a change, and we hope that this song would inspire people to not live in the past and to let go of the past. Don't let fear and past mistakes hold your heart back.

Don't allow the letdowns of the past hold your heart back from dreaming and achieving the full potential that God has for us. He wants us to live the life that Jesus described when He said "I come that they would have life, and life to the fullest." Ultimately, I feel that is the message of this song.

Which Bible verses connect to the song?

Deuteronomy 31:6 (NKJV): "Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you."

John 10:10 (The Voice): "The thief approaches with malicious intent, looking to steal, slaughter, and destroy; I came to give life with joy and abundance."

Acts 26:18 (The Voice): "It will be your mission to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the kingdom of Satan to the kingdom of God. This is so that they may receive forgiveness of all their sins and have a place among those who are set apart for a holy purpose through having faith in Me."

Ephesians 3:20-21 (NIV): "Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen."

Ephesians 5:14 (NIV): "This is why it is said: ‘Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.'"

1 John 4:18-19 (NKJV): "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. We love because He first loved us."

1 Corinthians 9:26-27 (MSG): "I don't know about you, but I'm running hard for the finish line. I'm giving it everything I've got. No sloppy living for me! I'm staying alert and in top condition. I'm not going to get caught napping, telling everyone else all about it and then missing out myself."

What's the takeaway message?

The message of the song is I won't let fear hold my heart back, and I won't follow the ghosts of my past. I want to live this life with eyes wide open, with expectation of that life that Jesus promises to give us if we are following Him.

Christmas is a new beginning for everyone. Jesus changed humanity for all of us. We have a line in the song, "I'm ready for a new beginning, wash over me and keep me marching on." It's a fresh start and a new beginning. God offers all of us a new day to wake up and enjoy the sun, a brand new day that the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it.

On a bigger scale, salvation is a fresh start and a new beginning. Every time we let go of something in our past and we repent, that is a chance to glorify God and live our lives better, to the fullest, for His glory. We want people to sing along with the song joyfully, living out their faith, running the race set before them, keeping their eyes on the prize and not just getting by. Jesus died to give us so much more. He died so that we can live for His glory, and He has so much in store for those who are anxiously waiting on Him and not settling for the status quo or daily grind but are dreaming and living big for Him. Do everything for His glory.

Lyrics:
Counting down, it's so much closer
What seemed forever now is over
God blessed me with a persevering heart
No matter what this year will bring me
I'm ready for a new beginning
Wash over me and keep me marching on

With eyes wide open
Ooh Ooh Ooh
With eyes wide open
Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh

Yeah!

Ohh Oh Oh Oh, Ohh Oh Oh Oh (2x)

Run the race, my feet are steady
I'm on the edge, there's no more waiting
Tomorrow's come and I am marching on

With eyes wide open
Ooh Ooh Ooh
With eyes wide open
Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh
Yeah!

Ohh Oh Oh Oh, Ohh Oh Oh Oh (2x)

Won't let fear hold my heart back
This is my resolution
Won't follow the ghosts of my past
This is my resolution
Won't let fear hold my heart back
This is my resolution
Won't follow the ghosts of my past
This is my resolution

With eyes wide open
Ooh Ooh Ooh
With eyes wide open
Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh

With eyes wide open
Ooh Ooh Ooh
Ohh Oh Oh Oh, Ohh Oh Oh Oh (2x)
With eyes wide open
Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh
Yeah!

Ohh Oh Oh Oh, Ohh Oh Oh Oh (2x)

Won't let fear hold my heart back
This is my resolution
Won't follow the ghosts of my past
This is my resolution
Won't let fear hold my heart back
This is my resolution
Won't follow the ghosts of my past
This is my resolution

God can do immeasurably more than anything and everything one can ask or even imagine, and this song is a true celebration of the great biblical truth of "Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us" (Ephesians 3:20).

We all deal with some level of fear, worry and anxiety. God knows that about us, and after I read somewhere that He tells us to not have fear or worry in His Word 365 times, enough for one time each day, I have been attentive to that concept in my daily Bible study. I have found that by being washed by the water of the Word, I am strengthened with the Truth that God wants us to know that fear, worry and being anxious is not His plan for our lives.

By reading the Bible every day, God wants us to have a daily reminder not to be afraid. The song also addresses the concept of keeping our eyes wide open, to remember our calling: "wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you" (Ephesians 5:14).

If you think about the type of faith we are called to have as believers, it is described as the faith of a mustard seed, and we are called to "walk by faith, and not by sight." That's the type of resolution we are called to have, and we serve a God who has infinitely more for us than we can think or imagine. This song reminds me to have resolve as a follower of Jesus, to keep my eyes wide open and find ways to serve Him for our good and His glory. My resolution is to pray more fervent prayers, have more faith and to have joy to the fullest.

The world is still crying out desperately for a Savior, and our job as followers of Jesus is to tell the world that He came, He lived a perfect, sinless life, He died for our sins and He is risen! That's cause to celebrate and sing out loudly, "Won't let fear hold my heart back, this is my resolution, won't follow the ghosts of my past, this is my resolution." Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
