BEHIND THE SONG WITH KEVIN DAVIS
#537 - "Can't Stop Singing" by Covenant Worship
David and Nicole Binion share about a passionate response tot he love of God and His kingdom among us.

In 1976, Pastors Mike and Kathy Hayes moved to Dallas, Texas, and founded Covenant Church. After more than 30 years, Covenant has grown to become one of the most prominent churches in the Dallas area. Covenant now facilitates four campuses in the metro area, bringing hearts to salvation and creating leaders in the body of Christ. David and Nicole Binion serve as the senior worship pastors of Covenant, and are joined by worship leaders Josh DuFrene and Colin Edge, who are also part of Covenant's songwriting team.

Israel Houghton produced and co-wrote eight of the tracks on Covenant Worship's recently released album, Kingdom. I had the chance to speak with David and Nicole Binion about the upbeat worship song, "Can't Stop Singing."

Please tell me the personal story behind writing this song.

David:
Josh DuFrene came to me with the idea initially. The original idea was very different from the final song. The only thing that was the same was half of what was the pre-chorus: "can't stop singing about Your love," and the verses were very wordy, but good. There was a cool vibe to the song. I worked with Josh to write the verses and we shaped the story of the song.

As we got ready to start pre-production of the album, we had asked Israel Houghton to produce for us and have a writing session with him. Josh and I flew out to Los Angeles to meet with Israel, and we showed him the song we had started. Israel's take was he liked the "can't stop singing" hook, made it the chorus, and then he simplified the verses and made the subject of the song about the words in the chorus.

What Josh had written as a pre-chorus became the chorus of the song. We dove into it and the lyrics poured out rather quickly. We did a complete re-write and "Jesus forever You will be more than enough" became the rest of the chorus. We kept coming back to the thought about God's grace being more than enough in each of the verses. One of the definitions I've heard is that Jehovah Jireh is the God who sees what we have need of, and He's more than enough.

Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?

2 Corinthians 12:9 (NASB):
"And He has said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.' Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me."

John 4:23 (NASB): But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers.

1 John 4:10 (VOICE): This is the embodiment of true love: not that we have loved God first, but that He loved us and sent His unique Son on a special mission to become an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

What is the takeaway message?

Nicole:
That 2nd Corinthians 12 passage has Paul talking about how three times he asked for the Lord to remove his thorn in the flesh and the Lord said, "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness." Paul concluded, "most gladly I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me."

We all have weaknesses and struggles that we've been through. Where would we be without the Lord? That's why I'll spend the rest of my life singing about the grace of the Lord. The song definitely reminds David and me of the song "I Will Sing of Your Love Forever." It has that same effect where you want to continue singing it over and over again. It is so cool because that applies directly to the lyric.

As worship leaders, we've devoted our lives to singing about the love of Jesus and sharing that with the world. We do our best to bring others into worship and encounter an experience with Him. I love the song for that reason. The love of Jesus is irresistible. Our hope is that listeners hear the love of Jesus.

David: In that lyric "in our weakness You had a plan for me" we come to church and put on our happy face. We want to act like we have everything together and not show our weakness. We are triumphant knowing that our weakness is made strong in our acknowledgment of that weakness to God.  With that understanding, in spite of my weakness, God has a plan for me. In John 4:23 Jesus said the time is coming when true worshipers would worship the Father in Spirit and Truth. To worship in Spirit means that we get to partner and co--labor with the Holy Spirit. That part is exciting! We love that idea. But to worship in truth? We cannot hide who we are and worship Him in truth. We have to be blatantly honest before Him. We have to be raw. We have to be humble. Worship has never been about drawing attention to ourselves but giving all of our focus to Him. It's never been about how good we are, but how good He is.

I've heard it preached that we as the redeemed sing the song that angels can't sing, about being redeemed, and I've always loved that. Angels were created with a purpose. They worship, they sing, and they were created to do so. We were born in sin. When we accept Jesus, and we have a choice, where angels don't know what it means to be redeemed by the blood of Jesus.

When David would play before Saul, the evil spirit would depart. Music has the power to lift and change an atmosphere. When you totally focus on the Lord and voice your affection to Him, you can feel it turn in the room. You don't just worship to experience goose bumps and feel good. When you worship there is purpose and when The Lord comes, the evil spirits depart. One of the lyrics on the album I love in "Kingdom Come" is in the bridge, when He comes, "mountains have to move, every chain is loosed, God we declare, Your Kingdom is here."

When His Kingdom comes, everything changes. That's not something that rhymes or a clever lyric, that's our theology and what we believe. When His presence comes, every knee has to bow and this world has to surrender. What I want to see happen is for people to surrender and to desire God's Presence. One of the definitions of worship is love responding to love.

Lyrics:
Your grace for me will always be
More than enough
More than enough
The power of Jesus Christ in me
Is more than enough
More than enough

Because my heart is full
And my soul is free
In my weakness You
Had a plan for me

And I can't stop singing about Your love
No I can't stop singing about Your love
Jesus forever You will be more than enough
No I can't stop, I can't stop

You will provide, You will supply
More than enough, more than enough
Open Heaven, open wide
More than enough, more than enough

Let the redeemed of The Lord say so
I can't stop shouting!
Can't stop shouting!

Because my heart is full
And my soul is free
In my weakness You
Had a plan for me
Now I sing the song
Angels cannot sing
I have been reborn
I have been redeemed

This is a fresh new song to sing to the Lord, and can be a call to worship for your worship set. The song declares the truth of God's Word in a creative way and is a great way to express your gratitude and devotion back to God for what He's done for us. The song has a catchy melody and is instantly singable, which is how worship songs can grab people's hearts and bring them into the Lord's presence. I find that the Lord blesses us through songs like this by taking our thoughts captive and allowing these holy thoughts to sanctify us throughout the day.

I "can't stop singing" the words, "Jesus forever You will be more than enough for me!" That is a sweet offering of praise to the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, Alpha and Omega, Beginning and End. It captures the biblical truth that "Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today and forever" (Hebrews 13:8-NIV).

We need daily reminders of the truth of this song that "The power of Jesus Christ in me is more than enough for me" and "Because my heart is full and my soul is free in my weakness You had a plan for me." We know how Paul expressed in 2 Corinthians 12:9 (NASB) "And He has said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.' Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me."

That lyric beautifully captures the essence of the Bible passage, which always reminds me that we are vessels and how the Lord uses our weaknesses to demonstrate His strength and power. That's something worth singing about "in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers." (John 4:23-NASB). As the song proclaims, "let the redeemed of the Lord say so, I can't stop shouting, can't stop shouting!" Amen to that!
