Tricia returned with her second solo album (and first pop album),
Radiate, which is a collaboration between the former
Superchick frontwoman and her husband, Nick Baumhardt (of Stellar Kart). He produced the album and accompanied Tricia in co-writing many of the songs.
"I loved working with Nick on this project," she said. "We're both easy going and don't take ourselves too seriously. We were able to be very honest throughout the creative process because we wanted the best art that we could create."
One of the most artistic songs on the project is the emotional ballad, "What I Know," which is a beautiful expression of faith in the unseen. We need to have that type of faith that Jesus describes in the Bible, "Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."
I had the chance to speak with Tricia about her worshipful song "What I Know," which is featured in the movie
God's Not Dead, in theaters on March 21.
Please tell me the message of this song and how it connects to the movie "God's Not Dead."
We made a music video for this song with clips from the film, which shows the storyline of what my song means to the movie. Music has a lot of different angles for me. I sing light-hearted songs, heartbroken songs, story songs and worship songs.
This song was written by Aaron Rice and Michael Farren, who are amazing writers. I heard the song and I don't remember what was going on in my life at the time, but this song really hit me. Coming from other writers, it expressed how I was feeling and I wouldn't have changed a word. I love the song. Even to the point of recording the song, we kept the demo vocals, and that's what you hear on the album. There's a connection that I have to the song that you hear in the recording. It was a very honest emotion, and made me think of people that I know, and every time in my life I've felt exactly this way. It just fit. I felt like they wrote the song for me.
In the end, the song is about faith. We all have these seasons when you don't get what's happening, things aren't going right, and you feel like your prayers aren't being answered. You wait on the Lord, and you need to think about the core of what you believe even if everything doesn't come together perfectly. When I saw the screening of the movie and how this song was part of the most emotional part of the movie is a great example about what it means to have faith despite your circumstances or feelings.
Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?
Isaiah 55:8-9 (NKJV): "For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways," says the Lord. "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.
John 20:29 (NKJV): Jesus said to him, "Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."
John 14:19 (The Voice): In a little while, the world will not see Me; but I will not vanish completely from your sight. Because I live, you will also live.
2 Corinthians 5:7 (NKJV): For we walk by faith, not by sight.
What is the takeaway message?
The song is about having faith in God, even when the exact opposite happens of what you are praying for. After I recorded the song and before the album released, our drummer from Superchick, Chase Lovelace, passed away. His mom called me and asked me to sing the song at his memorial service. It terrified me to sing this song in that circumstance. It was the exact situation that this song addresses, and I knew I could completely fall apart emotionally from singing this song.
Chase's situation was the biggest connector to me. He had been diagnosed with cancer and the whole season of recording for this album I was interceding for him on a constant basis and praying that he would be healed. I prayed that we wouldn't lose him. Then we did, and it was very sudden.
This song was this raw thing, and when we heard this song, I was a mess. It brought out so much emotion, and had lost a friend who was like a brother to me. I had moments when I thought it wasn't fair, and it was not what was meant to happen. During those doubts, I still know and believe in God. I know that He's never farther than a breath away.
There are so many moments when this song has brought healing for me. Beyond me, every female friend of mine has called me and said that when they heard this song in their car, they had to pull over. That's ultimately what drives me to be an artist. There's nothing more than I can ask for than for a song that I'm part of to bring healing to people. I'm so excited that it is in the movie. It's not just a song. It's a personal declaration of faith, like the movie.
Lyrics:
It's been another day when it seems like faith eludes me
Everything's been so confusing
Fear got the best of me
Now I'm lying here worried about tomorrow
'cause the weight of everything I don't know
Is so heavy I can't sleep
But the truth remains the same
Even when I don't know what to pray
But what I know
That You, my God are real
No matter what I feel
You've never let me go
And what I know
Is there will never be a day
You aren't just a breath away
And through it all I've gotta hold
To what I know
I could throw my fist in the air demanding answers
But in spite of all the questions
I'm still giving You my life
And if it doesn't turn out like I think it should
It doesn't change the fact You're always good
Your ways are higher than mine
And the truth remains the same
Even when I don't know what to pray
But what I know
That You, my God are real
No matter what I feel
You've never let me go
And what I know
Is there will never be a day
You aren't just a breath away
And through it all I've gotta hold
To love that's never failing
To hope that keeps on saying
"carry on", "carry on"
What I know
That You, my God are real
No matter what I feel
You've never let me go
And what I know
Is there will never be a day
You aren't just a breath away
And through it all I've gotta hold
To what I know
Gonna hold to what I know......
What I know...
What I know...
This song is a great way to focus on what is most important as we prepare our hearts for contemplating and celebrating the sacrifice and Resurrection of Jesus. The message of this song challenges listeners to think about our own doubts and how Jesus calls us to rely on Him and the power of His resurrection and to remember that He has overcome death and fear. We can know that He is real, He is near, and He is just a breath away.
We also know "Our God's not dead, He's surely alive, He's living on the inside, roaring like a lion." The Daniel Bashta penned song "Like a Lion," performed by Newsboys as "God's Not Dead" sings of victory over a century's worth of philosophers who thought otherwise.
Friedrich Nietzsche once proclaimed, "God is dead." But as Newsboys' friend and pastor Rice Broocks likes to say, "A funny thing happened on the way to the funeral." The belief that God is indeed alive is the truth that the song, and the movie, is amplifying. This song and the movie "God's Not Dead" reinforces our knowledge and faith that you can trust God and His Word and that He defeated death and the grave.
People don't want to deal with Jesus Christ. He requires people to admit they are sinners in need of a Savior. That's proof that Jesus is real and He's Alive! God knows what we need, and loves and cares for each of us deeply. When you put yourself under a microscope and examine whether you really believe all of the words of this great song, you'll find that it will challenge your faith and how closely you are walking with God.
Like Tricia, I am challenged to believe these words when I sing along with her and believe with all of my heart: "
What I know, that You my God are real, No matter what I feel, You've never let me go."
