BEHIND THE SONG WITH KEVIN DAVIS
#487 - "God of the Impossible" by Everfound
Lead singer Nikita shares about how this deeply personal song offers truth about God to everyone.

Everfound is made up of four brothers from Russia and is one of the most promising new bands that emerged in the past year. I've very quickly added this completely infectious release, Everfound to my most played and admired albums. Both Kevin McNeese and I each recently recognized the album as one of our Top 10 albums of 2013.

I am a long-time fan of the alternative rock bands Jimmy Eat World, The Killers and Relient K. If you like that style of music, get this album immediately. Everfound is loaded with catchy and hope-filled emotional rock songs. This album features incredibly tight guitar riffs and amazing harmonies.

A single from the album, "God of the Impossible," is based on my favorite passage of the Bible and my life verse, Isaiah 6:8 (NASB): "Then I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, 'Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?' Then I said, 'Here am I. Send me!'" I had the great opportunity to speak with Nikita Odnoralov, the band's lead singer and keyboardist, about the song.

Please tell me the personal story behind writing this song.

We wanted this song to be an anthem for our generation, and really anyone who is willing to do the will of God. The God of the impossible kind of opens up our hearts to the realization that we can do God's will. We can do it because we are completely sold out to Him. There's nothing impossible for God. Understanding that little detail that through our God nothing is impossible, it allows us to boldly stand up and say, "Here I am, send me." I want to be a part of that impossible. That's what I was created to be a part of—these God moments in life.

That's what we wanted to convey and write about with this song. We were thinking about how David stands there and faces the giant, Goliath. The whole army is standing there and they are afraid and terrified and this giant has been harassing them for some time. Everybody was terrified, but David believed that his God was greater. He believed that he could be a part of the impossible. He trusted God and he slayed the giant. We mixed that story with the story of Isaiah saying, "Here I am, send me." All of that was put together. We love this song. We are really proud of it and we're excited to see how people are connecting to it.

Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?

Isaiah 6:5-7 (NIV):
"Woe to me!" I cried. "I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty." Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. With it he touched my mouth and said, "See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for."

Isaiah 6:8 (The Voice): Then I heard the Lord's voice. Eternal One: Whom shall I send? Who will go for Us? Isaiah: Here I am! Send me.

Hebrews 13:8 (NIV): Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

What is the takeaway message?

This song ties in with our story. I remember we were sitting down to write this song, thinking about how we could nod to the generations before us, but not make it overt writing about my grandparents and great uncle. We wanted everyone to be able to join in with us. My great uncle was in prison and a lot of my family had to be in hiding as underground Christians in Russia. God totally took that and within two generations has put us on a huge platform here in America. This is the most influential country in the world. American music is the most influential music in the world. We get to be a part of that, and that's an impossible story right there.

God never changes. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. The fact is that God is looking for people to send. Jesus said the harvest is many, but the workers are few. We want to cultivate this culture within the youth and anyone who is listening to awaken them to the power of God's Word. God is here. God is in our churches, and in our youth groups. He is here, and we just have to realize the power of what He has called us to be and what He has called us to do. That's to be children of God, and know our worth in that.

We are able to stand up and say, here I am, send me. Isaiah said, "Woe to me." I think in our culture we feel like who am I for God to use? Yes, He has redeemed me, but who am I for Him to send me out? We hear that so much. We need to understand that through Christ, He has forgiven us and He has told us that "we will do greater things than this." He said to go out and preach the Gospel to every nation. What we are trying to say is that the same God that called Isaiah is calling us.

Lyrics:
Just a boy with a sling and a stone
But the heart of a lion that dared him to go
To hear the sound of the cynical
Die out with the sound of the giants fall

Oh I dare to believe in incredible things
Oh I'm ready to go
Here I am Lord send me
I won't look back cause I was made
To be a part of the impossible
You're God of the impossible
Here I am Lord send me
I won't back down cause I believe
You are the God of the impossible
Here I am send me

Empty bones and a thirsty soul
Dreaming of more than the life I had know
Til I tasted the burning the coal
And my guilt was erased, my sin was atoned

Oh I dare to believe in incredible things
Oh I'm ready to go
Oh I dare to believe in incredible things

Oh cause You're the God of the impossible
Oh I dare to believe in incredible things
Oh I'm ready to go

I get swept up in the profession of "God of the Impossible" which reflects the cry of my heart with lyrics that connect to my life verse Isaiah 6:8..."Here I am, send me," as the band proclaims: "I won't back down ‘cause I believe / You are the God of the impossible / Here I am, send me.

This song is truly a sing-along chorus that we can all adopt as believers. I think the key for me is how that Isaiah 6 passage comes alive for me in this song, along with "Here I Am" by Shaun Groves, and "Here I Am" by Downhere. Add this song to that mix as part of my devotional encouragement through music to "dare to believe in incredible things, I'm ready to go" and to answer God's when He calls, "Here I am. Send me!"

That Bible verse stirs me to answer my calling as a Christian to do God's will. I'm consistently praying that I have the courage to say, "Here I am, send me" when God calls me. This song is a great prayer and answer to that call. The first five chapters of the Book of Isaiah include God's prophet telling the Israelites about God's pending judgment. Then in chapter six, Isaiah is given a vision of Heaven and falls on his face and he says: "Woe to me! I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips" Isaiah 6:5a (NIV).

Seven hundred years before Jesus came to earth, Isaiah pointed us to the Cross and the saving love of Jesus. Once you know His saving love as a sold-out follower of Jesus, what does "Here I Am, send me" look like in your life? The Bible is all about having faith, trusting God, and doing things that the world considers impossible. Amen to that!
