Sure to become one of the top acts of the decade, the
Jonas Brothers' success over the past several years has been almost unreal. From sold-out tours with fellow artist of faith Miley Cyrus to a platinum selling album, it's hard to know where to start talking about the band's faith and career, so let's start back at the beginning.
It all began with the youngest brother in the band, Nick. After starring on Broadway, Columbia Records offered Nick (who was 13 at the time) a record deal, realizing his potential. Nick began recording songs such as "Dear God" and "A Christmas Prayer" to put on his originally planned Christian solo album. It wasn't long, however, until Columbia figured out that Nick's two older brothers, Kevin and Joe, had talent as well, and immediately cast them as the "Jonas Brothers," and gave them their first CD,
It's About Time. The record was originally planned to be marketed mainly for the Christian industry, and their success in the Christian world did happen with the radio favorite "Time for Me to Fly." But what really got them started was when MTV took notice of the video for the song "Mandy," and quickly put it into heavy rotation on the channel.
Disappointing sales of
It's About Time, however, ultimately led to the somewhat surprising announcement that the brothers had severed ties with Columbia Records. Disney's Hollywood Records saw a huge opportunity though, and signed with the band in late 2006. The recording process began shortly after, and almost exactly one year after the release of their slow-selling debut, the Jonas Brothers' self-titled
sophomore album hit stores shelves; this time around it worked, big time. Since the album's summer 2007 release, over 1 million copies have reached the CD players and iPods of fans nationwide. Jonas Brothers also has produced two Top 40 radio and chart hits ("When You Look Me in the Eyes" and "S.O.S."), has earned them a performance on last year's American Music Awards, and also garnered them a headlining spot on one of the most watched shows of the year,
Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve. It doesn't end there either. Somehow, in the middle of all of the pandemonium over their musical success, Nick, Kevin, and Joe have managed to not only film a movie (airing in June), but also have found time to give fans a taste of their acting skills. Their upcoming TV show, titled
J.O.N.A.S., will be airing on the Disney Channel sometime this fall.
All of the Jonas Brothers' fame may lead you to wonder how these brothers are able to keep their feet on the ground in the midst of the continuous flow of mainstream pressure. Well, unquestionably, it's their faith, which is what this article's all about. It's common knowledge to any avid Jonas Brothers fan that the Jonas family puts faith first in their life. The boys' father, Kevin Sr., is an ordained minister and met his wife Denise at a church singing group, so the entire family comes from a strong Christian background. And the brothers themselves never shy away from talking (or singing) about their faith. Positive lyrics on their albums and songs that they sing at their live shows only (such as "Eternity") literally speak for themselves. When questioned in a recent
Entertainment Weekly article as to how the boys stay so humble, their father replied "If we have healthy communication, if we continue to stay together as a family--the opportunity is there for them to be an exception to the rule in Hollywood. That's our hope. That's our prayer." And an exception to the rule in Hollywood they are indeed. In another recent interview, the boys boldly took a stand for their faith in Christ by talking about their commitment to stay pure until marriage and even mentioned the purity rings that each of them have worn for many years and still do to this day. The brothers call it a "promise to ourselves and God" and say it's "just one of our ways of being different than everybody else out there." A job well done, no doubt.
What else could you ask for in a band? They're humble, God-fearing, and simply make great music. But do them a favor--pray that God remains their focus and an active part of their lives as they become increasingly more active in the mainstream world. With their faith on their side, you can be sure that the Jonas Brothers will be sticking around for a long time.
Oh, and don't forget to be on the lookout for their next album, releasing this August. Let's hope it's another good one.
