BEHIND THE SONG WITH KEVIN DAVIS
#437 - "Never Beyond Repair" by Everfound
The Odnoralov brothers talk about how a friend's tough times inspired this song, and how God's version of repair is different than ours.

Word Entertainment's new band Everfound is one of my favorite new artists of the past several years. I grew up listening to "new wave" alternative rock music bands, New Order, Depeche Mode, and The Cure. If you like that style of emotional rock, and modern rock bands like Coldplay and Jimmy Eat World, then you are in for a treat with Everfound. The band is named for how we are ever found in Christ Jesus, from Romans 8:38-39.

The band is made up of four Russian-born brothers. Ruslan, 23, plays keyboard/guitar and writes songs with brother Nikita, 22, who handles the lead vocals and plays keyboards. Yan, 20, plays drums and Illarion, 17, plays bass. "Never Beyond Repair"—the lead single of their self-titled album—sets the tone perfectly for the musical and lyrical hook of the album, which is about finding our true identity. The song insightfully explores what it means to be a soul in process with these poignant lyrics: "The moment you gave up / He gave up His life for you / The Savior is able / His forgiveness is the proof."

I had the great opportunity to interview Everfound in person at Creation Festival Northeast about their great new song, "Never Beyond Repair."

Please tell me the personal story behind writing this song.

We wrote the song after a conversation we had with a friend. She felt like she had done way too much wrong and had made too many bad decisions in her life. She felt like she had let down too many people and felt that she was broken beyond God's being able to repair her heart. Based on her situation, and going to the studio to write after that conversation I thought about how there are moments when we all feel like that.

There are things in life that we think are too big for God to fix. We sometimes know better than to think like that, but we still do, if you know what I mean. The song was for a friend, but it turned out to challenge our own hearts. God's been showing us that His version of repair is better than ours. He takes us "from glory to glory," the Bible tells us. Also, in Romans 8, the Bible tells us about having life in the Spirit. Although our bodies are wasting away, the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead is living in us. I feel like that's a huge part of our repair as believers.

Please tell me about any Bible verses that you used to write the song.

Romans 8:38-39 (The Voice): "For I have every confidence that nothing—not death, life, heavenly messengers, dark spirits, the present, the future, spiritual powers,  height, depth, nor any created thing—can come between us and the love of God revealed in the Anointed, Jesus our Lord."

What is the takeaway message for listeners?

As believers, we can know it as fact that God heals. He may heal us from depression, but it may not totally go away this side of Heaven. God's version of repair is that His Spirit promises to give us life. His grace is sufficient. When we were listening back to the collection of songs, and making notes about which songs to put on the album, regarding this song it was a struggle. Sometimes in our so-called Christian culture, we are so quick to give an answer. We've tried to be very honest with our lyrics and with our songs about where we are in our walks with Christ. When we wrote this song, the statement "you're never beyond repair," we weren't sure if we could say that.

Every night, are we able to get up on stage and say no matter where you are, what you've done, who you've lost, that your heart is not beyond repair. What if a mother who has lost a child hears that? We came up with a list of things, and we all have areas as Christians in our lives that aren't completely healed or fixed. Maybe we'll leave this life with those issues. It's interesting, because we struggle with these things and ask God to fix these broken parts of our lives and our hearts. We're not the first to pray that to God. Paul prays that to God. God's response to Paul, "My grace is sufficient for you, My strength is made perfect in your weakness." That's a part of God's version of repair. Every individual, when you trust God, see how He leads you through that journey of repair. One day it will all be flawless.

Lyrics:
You've done what you promised that you'd never do
Your innocence gone and your fears coming true
How did you end up like this, feeling so lost?

Like your life is in pieces too broken to fix
And chains got you tied to a weight you can't lift
But the biggest mistake that you made
Isn't too big

You're not beyond repair
Grace meets you anywhere
And the mess of your heart
Is where love's gonna start
Cause you are, never beyond repair
You're never beyond repair

For all of your pain there's a father who hurts
For all of your hurt there's a healer who works
You're never too far from his reach
So just believe, just believe

The moment you gave up
He gave up his life for you
The savior is able,
His forgiveness is the proof

You're not beyond repair
Grace meets you anywhere
And the mess of your heart
Is where love's gonna start
Cause you are, never beyond repair
You're never beyond repair

Everfound is the top alt-rock album of the year. I can't get enough of this album, which is loaded with catchy and hope-filled emotional rock songs. This album will stay in heavy rotation for me all year. Similar to House of Heroes and for KING & COUNTRY, this album features incredibly tight guitar riffs and amazing harmonies. This album is by far the catchiest, most energetic and emotionally engaging alternative rock album I've heard this year.

At the end of the Gospel of Luke, we have a record of Jesus talking to the thief on the cross. In Luke 23:40-43 (The Voice): "The believing thief says, 'Don't you have any fear of God at all? You're getting the same death sentence He is! We're getting what we deserve since we've committed crimes, but this man hasn't done anything wrong at all! (turning to Jesus) Jesus, when You come into Your kingdom, please remember me.' Jesus responds, 'I promise you that this very day you will be with Me in paradise.'"

This beautiful picture of redemption embodies the message that you're never beyond repair. The bridge of this song proclaims, "The moment you gave up, He gave up his life for you, The Savior is able, His forgiveness is the proof." That believing thief was certainly thinking he was beyond repair. Yet in his dying breath he proclaimed his faith to his Savior who saved him that very moment. Jesus tells that thief, "this very day you will be with Me in paradise." No matter who you are, no matter what you've done, you've never beyond the reach of our Savior and Redeemer, Jesus. Amen to that!
