Dream Records sat down with
Silverline lead singer Ryan Edberg and guitarist Steve Adams as they shared with us the meaning behind each of the songs from the group's upcoming new album. Titled
Lights Out, the album is set to release everywhere on April 9 with their first single, also titled, "Lights Out."
"Hold On" is one of my personal favorite songs. Sometimes we don't feel like we are capable of answering the call God has on our lives. This song says, "ready or not / it doesn't matter today / we're going to take this city." We know all too well that living a sold-out life for Christ has its tough times! There are days when we really feel overwhelmed by everything around us. This song was written as encouragement for believers around us that need a helping hand to accomplish everything God has for them!
Our title track, "Lights Out," is another power anthem meant to encourage others! The chorus says, "I want to wake and see the truth / Let's take the old and make it new / Cause it's lights out, lights out." The meaning behind these lyrics simply talks about being renewed in our minds. Remembering that each new day is a day to wake and live for Christ. "Lights Out" talks about closing the door on our past mistakes and focusing on what is ahead of us. Sometimes we just need that reminder to take the next step!
So far the few people that have heard "Never Looking Back" have really connected with it. The title pretty much sums up the meaning. The second verse says, "My life is all but perfect sometimes/ I just can't get it right / I wonder if it's worth it when I've wasted so much time." We meet so many kids out on the road that really feel worthless. I think the generation coming up now is the least-fathered generation of all time. Kids today really need to know how valuable they are in Jesus' eyes. I think that our past can be one of the greatest hindrances in finding forgiveness in Christ. Once we find him we don't need to be slaves to our past.
"With the Angels" is a very special song. This song was written just sitting by myself with no intent to even be on the Silverline album. I just felt like writing a worship song to tell God how great he is and give him praise. I played it once for a sound check and everyone said, "Whoa what song is that? That is really good!" When I told the guys I wrote it, they all said that we had to play it! We actually stumbled through it that night at the show. We didn't have it all arranged or anything just played the chords and sang it. That night we saw several people in tears during it, and got such a great response after the show we knew we were on to something huge!
As people we often talk behind people's backs and say things that cut deep; "Vicious" talks about that. There is power in the words we use, and we need to watch what we say. The Word says that the tongue has the power of life and death within it. Such great power shouldn't be taken lightly! This song is written from the perspective of not letting others cut us down and determine our worth. It says, "You're not the end of me / I've had enough /
You're Vicious."
"Found in You" is a great rock track. Sometimes we are afraid to give up certain things when we become a Christian. Finding our identity in things of this world never really satisfies. The things we cling to the most often are of no real value. When we find our identity in Christ only then can we be complete. "So take all that you want from me / I'm cutting ties with who I am / All that I thought I'd lost I've found in you / Be my eyes when I can't see / take the fear that's blinding me / Nothing is lost / all is found here in you." These words remind us that everything we need is found in Christ.
Life can become so busy. Our lives can be cluttered with obligations from work and family. Stress can easily over take even the best of us. I know for me running a full-time business, being in a full-time band, and finding time to be a great husband and father can be overwhelming to say the least. We can get so worried about life and every day things. We forget to just "Be Still" and ask God what He has for us. If we remember to take a few minutes and give our cares to him it can make all the difference in the world!
We are in a battle everyday--a "War." This world is trying to keep our eyes off of God and put them on anything else. We see negative stuff all day long and wonder why so many people are depressed. The immoral is king in our current pop culture. The more you sleep around and sleeze your way to the top, the better off you'll be--that's the message we hear every day on the radio, and on TV. Some days I get so sick of all the crap that we are force fed it feels like we are in a "War" against the darkness all around us. Silverline loves its fight songs, and this is definitely one of them! We have never been very passive in our beliefs. We believe some things are worth fighting for!
"When everything is lost / and everything is broken / you pull me out into something better with You," say the lyrics of "Something Better." This is a beautiful ballad about reaching our true potential. God's plan for us
are so much better than our own. He wants more for us then we could ever imagine! In this song we sing about the struggle between doing what we think is the best for us and leaning on God for His ultimate plan for us!
I (Steve) wrote "Never Too Far Gone" after our last tour. I have become more and more aware of the struggles of young people today. I look into kids' eyes at shows and I just see empty despair. My heart really breaks for every kid in America who feels completely worthless. I actually grew up with an awesome family and had it really good. It wasn't till I started traveling that I realized I was in the minority. More often than not the kids I meet at shows just need to know that Jesus gave everything for them--that He loves them more than anything! This song sums up the reasons I'm in Silverline today. This song is baring my heart for all to see. This song is a story, but also a prayer for anyone listening, that they would feel love and worth! I know the anointing that a song can carry. I know the power of music. I just want to wrap this song around the broken like a giant hug!
