BEHIND THE SONG WITH KEVIN DAVIS
#402 - "Battery" by V. Rose
The Clear Sight Music artist shares how this song was a download from God in a time of worship and focus.

Clear Sight Music artist V. Rose, shares her excitement regarding her new EP, The Electro-Pop Deluxe, which released Feb. 25. She explains, “After traveling to different cities following the release of my first album I got to see what songs the fans loved the most. One of them being my single "Battery," which just about stands alone as the electro-pop song of the album. This really inspired me to write more electro-pop music that my peers and I can rock out to with a message that mom and dad won't think twice about blasting in the car.”

V. Rose released her self-titled debut album in August of 2011 which included features from labelmate FLAME and John Katina (lead singer of The Katinas). Besides "Battery," the project also included the single “Not So Average."

I had the great opportunity to interview V. Rose about “Battery.”

Please tell me the personal story and message behind the song “Battery.”

This song almost didn’t make the album. It was almost done, and we were working on some tracks and he [FLAME] played the musical hook that started this song. I had never heard anything like that in Christian music. It sounded like a Britney Spears song. I knew my album was almost done, but I knew I had to write a song to go with that hook.

I had one day to write this song before we finished the album. I was in my house, put the track on, and at first I couldn’t come up with any lyrics. I don’t normally write pop songs. Typically I write more R&B style songs. I had to call on God for the lyrics and the melody. In the middle of the room, I just started to worship God with the music on. I was jumping around like I was performing a song. I was asking God if I was performing this song, what would He want me to say? That’s ironic, because the subject of the song became how God is my energy and the Holy Spirit gave me the lyrics. The song totally came from God.

This is the message that God wanted me to give people: If they really want to know God, they need to come to Him humbly, on their knees, with their hands in the air. At concerts, people throw their hands in the air to glorify artists, and this song is about throwing your hands in the air to glorify God. When I was a kid, my mom taught me how to pray. Lift your hands, tell Jesus you love Him. As an artist, I want to pass on how to pray to Jesus. This song is about showing people how to worship God, how to come to Him, how to ask to be used by Him.

Please tell me which Bible verses connect to the message of the song.

Psalm 63:4: "Thus I will bless You while I live; I will lift up my hands in Your name."

Psalm 28:1-2: "To You I will cry, O Lord my Rock: Do not be silent to me, Lest, if You are silent to me, I become like those who go down to the pit. Hear the voice of my supplications When I cry to You, When I lift up my hands toward Your holy sanctuary."

...and 1 John 4:4: "You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world."

What do you consider to be the takeaway message for listeners?

The main point of my music is to lead people back to their relationship with Christ. A lot of times people will walk around like they are a Christian when they have no relationship with Jesus. That’s disconnected, and that’s the whole meaning of this song. In the song, I’m singing about getting charged by the energy of His Holy Spirit by plugging into Him and His Word.

The power all comes from our relationship with Jesus. It doesn’t come from ourselves or by calling ourselves a Christian--it comes from knowing Him deeply. If you really know God, and you really love Him, you’ll have the boldness to share about Him. If you don’t really know Him, maybe that’s why you don’t share about Him. You need to experience God. I get my energy from God, and I wanted to proclaim that in this song.

As a Christian pop artist I want to inspire people to stand up and shine their God-given light, His light, and take over the darkness that's in this world. By turning up your light, you will encourage others to turn up theirs. When I was growing up, I loved Stacie Orrico, and when she left Christian music to make secular music I was so devastated. I threw her album in the trash and wrote her an e-mail asking her who I should look up to now?

Having that experience, I’m very grounded now that people look up to me as an artist. It’s not about me. It’s really cool what I get to do, and I want to show Jesus in my walk and with my music. I want to give glory back to God.

Lyrics:
Oh, oh, oh, oh!
On my knees making a plea, Lord, I'm ready--use me,
The people in the world need a Way,
I tell 'em what You had me to say
And I'll keep my hands in the air!

Jesus Your name, is power,
You’re the outlet I plug into
I just want to be used,
I want to be electricity just for Your city!

I feel His energy, charging me like a battery,
Every time my hands go up up, up up,
Every time my hands go up up, up up,
I feel His energy, using me like a battery,
Every time my hands go up up, up up,
Every time my hands go up up, up up
Uh where are them hands at, get them up high where them hands at,
If you know Jesus stood in your place giving you grace,
Then don’t take it for granted (no)
See, I cannot be purged,
When I’m feeling this surge,
And I’m gettin the urge, to go give them the word
Yes, I gotta rejoice cause with my voice I was screaming at chicks,
Rapping bout nothing and trying to get rich,
Looking at heaven and shaking my fist
But uh I want the Lord to use me like I'm a tool like I'm Moses' rod,
Screaming give me Jesus, give me Jesus, give me Jesus, Give me God,

Can you feel the power, when you say the name
Like turning the lights on, and all the darkness fades!
But we don’t deserve it, it’s only by grace
It’s only through faith that He uses me!

Matthew Henry’s Bible commentary: “In these verses David is very earnest in prayer. The good hopes he had that God would favor him: I lift up my hands towards thy holy sanctuary, which denotes, not only an earnest desire, but an earnest expectation, thence to receive an answer of peace. The most holy place within the veil is here, as elsewhere, called the sanctuary; there the ark and the mercy-seat were, there God was said to dwell between the cherubim, and there He spoke to His people. That was a type of Christ, and it is to Him that we must lift up our eyes and hands, for through Him all good comes from God to us.”

One of V. Rose’s strengths in addition to her strong vocals are her infectious and engaging lyrics. “Battery” is a great follow-up to “Not So Average” with the electronic/dub-step/pop arrangement, and the prayerful and sincere lyrics: “Can you feel the power, when you say the name / Like turning the lights on, and all the darkness fades! But we don’t deserve it, it’s only by grace / It’s only through faith that He uses me!”

She further demonstrates her commitment in the line: “Jesus Your name, is power, You’re the outlet I plug into, I just want to be used,  I want to be electricity just for Your city.”

V. Rose is truly a “Christian Girl” (she has a song by that name), and is a wonderful role model for a girl of any age. Being a father of three young daughters, I heartily recommend V. Rose’s songs for fans of Britney Spears, Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry. We raise our hands to celebrate and in surrender. We can lift up our hands in confidence to God and know that His mercy is unfailing. His love is never-ending. He is our refuge and our strength.

Lord, thank You for amazing Christian music artists like V. Rose who love You and want to glorify Your Name through their songs. Thank You for giving V. Rose the gift of songwriting and singing so that she can give her offering of praise and worship back to You. Thank You for this great song that fires me up about the love that You have for us Lord.

As V. Rose proclaims in the song: “...I'll keep my hands in the air!” The takeaway message of the song comes from this quote from JI Packer: "When you truly know God, you have energy to serve Him, boldness to share Him, and contentment in Him.” To God be all the glory. Amen.
