BEHIND THE SONG WITH KEVIN DAVIS
#388 - "All I Really Want" by Adam Cappa
Adam talks with NRT's Kevin Davis about the longing of each of our hearts.

Twenty-five year old new BEC Recordings artist Adam Cappa first met fellow Indiana native Jeremy Camp through a mutual friend. The chart-topping rock/worship artist generously welcomed Adam to his home studio to record some demos and offer insights about music and ministry. Co-written and produced with Camp and Andy Dodd (Switchfoot, Plain White T's), The Rescue bears comparison to Cappa's mentor with its biblically insightful themes and emotionally stirring arrangements. It also brings to mind Matt Redman and Chris Tomlin through subtle Euro-style production values and a crystalline singing voice that engages both pop and praise listeners alike. I had the chance to interview Adam about his song "All I Really Want."

Please tell me the story behind writing the song "All I Really Want."

For all of my songs, I start by reading Scripture. This song came from reading Psalm 142:5. David said, "You are my refuge, and all I want in this life." The idea for the song is that Jesus Christ is enough for us. Sometimes we think about how much Jesus is worth in our lives, and the idea is that He's not just enough for us, He's more than enough for us. We can search so much in this life and I see it all the time with teenagers. We search for something to fill the voids in our hearts, and take the place of the pain we're feeling. We're never going to find it in this world, because the reality is that what we're searching for is Jesus. There's nothing better to be found than what He has to offer.

Please tell me about the Bible verses you used in writing the song.

Psalm 142:5: I cried out to You, O Lord: I said, "You are my refuge, My portion in the land of the living."

How can listeners apply that message when they listen to the song?

My hope for this song it to encourage people that Christ is more than you can ever imagine. He's more than you could ever hope to find. He can be all that you desire, and He can fill all that you need and all that you desire. Being able to write this song was an amazing experience. Everything about this song and the commitments lead me back to the Word of God. "I am His and He is mine." Just like David in Psalm 142:5, we need to declare to God that He's our refuge and our place of rest. Jesus is where we find our strength and He is everything we need.

The song is about letting everything else go and proclaiming to God that He is all we want and all that we need, "I am Yours." To encourage listeners, it all starts with the Word of God, which is living and active. When we let that penetrate our hearts, it changes us. When I am hanging on to the Word of God, I'm hanging on to every single Word. That's what I want to breathe into my life. That's what I want to breathe out, and what I want to live out.

Lyrics:

I can feel it all over my skin,
It's pouring out from the depths within,
Like a river running with no ending sign.
Everything's right.
You can see it all over my face,
I don't ever want to leave this place,
When I am wrapped in Your embrace I find that the search is through,
All that's left to do is fall into Your arms and give You all my heart.

All I really want is You.
Nothing better I can find.
All I really want to do is tell the world that You’re mine.
I've been everywhere and I-I-I know,
Without You I have no where to go,
You gave me life and made me new,
All I really want is You.

I can feel it when You say my name,
Like a fire running through my veins.
As it stops, that's the day my heart was found.
And everything's changed.
There's some things that you cannot hide.
Like the light shining through my eyes,
You can see it even when I'm miles away.

The search is through,
All that's left to do is fall into Your arms and give You all my heart.

I give You all away, hanging on every word You say.
You’re all that I've searched for, and I will never ask for more.
Take my heart and chosen every way.

All I really want is You.

Adam's debut album The Rescue is a great collection of joyful, encouraging worship songs. Other highlights for me are "Perfect", "From the Inside" and the debut hit single "The Rescue." I found myself relating to the songs right away and I enjoy singing along in worship. If you like The Afters, Chris Tomlin and Kristian Stanfill, you'll enjoy Adam Cappa. "All I Really Want" is a stand-out song, both in melody and message as Adam croons "All I really want is You," the song reminds me of the hit songs "Day After Day" and "Always" by Kristian Stanfill.

Corrie ten Boom said: "When we are powerless to do anything, it is a great joy that we can come and step inside the ability of Jesus." This song has really been resonating with me as I realize that Jesus commands us to trust God completely no matter our circumstances or personal distractions or concerns. The song includes some great challenges such as in the lyrics: "I give You all away, hanging on every word You say. You're all that I've searched for, and I will never ask for more."

The core of our faith as Christians is found in John 14:6. Jesus is the only way. All roads don't lead to Heaven, despite what a secular culture tries to tell us. This is a worshipful and uplifting song. I have been singing it at the top of my lungs since I first heard the song. We all need to be bold as followers of Jesus and express our worship and dedication to Him.

We can't know everything and we are not in control, but trusting God gives us assurance that we don't have to be afraid. God will be there to pick us up when we fall. The challenge for me when I listen to this song is pick an area of my life that I've been trying to control and instead step out and put all of my hope and trust in God. In the song Adam boldly proclaims, "All I really want to do is tell the world that You're mine."

We all need to be unashamed of our faith in Jesus and we all need to be bold in expressing our faith, fully and wholeheartedly. Eternity hangs in the balance. The title of the song is the answer to all that we need and desire. You can sing along loudly with this song and tell Jesus, "All I really want is You." Amen!
