"I Believe In You - Steven Curtis Chapman" Lyrics [edit]
by Various Artists - ConGRADulations! Series | from the album ConGRADulations! Class of 2005

Aren't you the little one
That hid in my arms afraid of the thunder
Are these the little hands
That held so tight to mine
Didn't we both agree you'd never grow up
And now here we are
And here you go
Of all the things I want to say
The things you really need to know is

I believe in you
I believe in you
Everything you are
Everything you are becoming
And I believe in you
I believe in you
So spread your wings and fly
On the winds of knowing
I always believe in you

So many prayers we prayed
So many dreams to get to this moment
Now this is where we stay
While you go change the world
But I'll be where I have always been
Up in the stands cheering you on and
Singing this song
A song the very God who made you
Has been singing all along

I believe in you
I believe in you
Everything you are
Everything you are becoming
And I believe in you
I believe in you
So spread your wings and fly
On the winds of knowing

I will always believe in you
And when you rise and when you fall
I'll still believe in you
Just close your eyes and hear me calling
I believe in you
Oh, I believe in you

Behind the Song:
'My daughter Emily came to me at the beginning of the year when I started to work on this record and said, “Dad this is my senior year of high school,” and I said yeah, thanks for reminding me. She said, “I will be graduating this year and I would like to ask you to sing at my graduation.” I thought boy, now this is going to be one of the toughest assignments I’ve ever been given. so I knew I had to have just the right song for this occasion. I’d written a song for Emily called “I Believe in You” when she went from middle school to high school and just laid it aside and never did anything with it. So, I rewrote it and sang it at her graduation. I did fine until halfway though the song. She was sitting with all the seniors and I intentionally did not look right at her. I thought if I looked at her and she looked at me that’s going to be the end of it and I won’t be able to finish. So I just roamed the crowd with my eyes, but made eye contact with her about half way through. She was in full melt down mold. It wasn’t “sniff sniff,’ it was this look on her face that was full on balling. She was holding it in as far as the sound, but her face was showing all the emotions. A lump came up in my throat and I immediately started to buckle yet I somehow made it through the song. It’s a very special song for us and hopefully it will be to other people as well.' - Steven Curtis Chapman
