Lost Ocean is an alternative rock band from Bakersfield, California, USA. The band's players -- bassist Bret Black, guitarist/vocalist Jeff Gray, drummer Christopher Short, and keyboardist Schuyler Johnson -- are born-again Christians, but Black said they don't think of themselves as a Christian band playing Christian music.
"I guess you'd say we're Christian by faith, but not by genre," Black said. "We're not a praise band. We can be in the secular music market but still hold true to what we believe," Black said. "At the end of the day it's who you are, not where you play."
Lost Ocean formed bit by bit, evolving into a keyboard-centered act. A friend with connections in the music industry passed along some of the band's rough recordings, which got the attention of Credential, a label under the EMI banner. In August 2005, the guys loaded their gear on a trailer and drove to the label's headquarters in Nashville, Tenn., where they performed in person for record executives.
Their self-titled debut was released on February 20, 2007. In January 2008, they went on the Northwest Winter Rock Tour with The Send and Ruth; and then later on the Credential Recordings Tour with other Credential bands in April 2008.
In early 2009, it was announced that Lost Ocean had been dropped from Credential Recordings after their contract ran out. In June 2009, Lost Ocean released their first independent release, an EP called All Our Friends. In November 2009, Lost Ocean released their second studio album Could This Be Love?.
