Scott Springer is a name known primarily by Christian rock history diehard fans. He and the Christian rock band he led, Halo, have an intriguing story. A clever acronym for "Heavenly Angelic Light Orchestra," Halo would release two albums before disbanding and making way for a solo album from Springer.
Humble Beginnings
After visiting the South as an unsigned band for nearly a decade, Scott Springer and Halo finally got a break when Bob Hartman of Petra fame received their music demo. He sent their tape to John and Dino Elefante, producers of Petra and a slew of other underrated Christian rock acts in the 1980s and 1990s, who signed Halo to their label Pakaderm Records. Halo released a self-titled album (remastered in 2020 as Life Goes On) in 1990, produced by the Elefante brothers with help from Bob Hartman, too.
Heaven Calling
Halo released a sophomore project in 1991 called Heaven Calling. The project would net the band multiple No. 1 songs. Hits include the upbeat "Secret To Love" and the ballad "Eye of the Storm." Springer's powerful vocals and Elefante's signature production and songwriting fueled a big rock sound. With influences from classic rock bands such as Foreigner, Journey, Petra, and Mastedon, Halo personified what it meant to be a 1980s rock band to a tee. Keys and guitar-driven numbers made sure that their radio hits grabbed your attention.
Hello Forever
Halo disbanded in 1993, and Springer released his solo album, Hello Forever, which boasted more of a contemporary Christian music sound. The title track is a powerful ballad that reflects on the wonders of eternity in heaven. I immediately recognized Elefante's distinctive production style when I first heard this song. Another standout track is "Anytime," which features an uplifting and memorable chorus, setting the album's tone. Although Springer's work with Halo was more overtly rooted in 1980s rock, he truly shines in his solo project's softer, contemporary songs.
While Springer has more or less retired from active music touring, he still works in ministry. It's been a long time since he's recorded anything new, but with Girder Music recently re-releasing his remastered catalogue, the renewed interest could be an opportunity.
