Christians are called to worship the living God, Creator, and Savior in spirit and truth. Psalm 150:6 says, "Let everything that has breath praise the Lord." And Psalm 100:4 tells us to enter His gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise. Give him thanks, and bless his name.
Why is it so often hard for men to get into the spirit of authentic, bountiful worship? I want to provide you with my top 10 worship list to help you with songs that can draw you closer to Jesus but also to help you give Him proper thanks, praise, and respect.
Creating this list was incredibly difficult because there are many great worship songs today, especially those released in the last five years. I left many great artists and bands out of this list, but not to slight them or because they are inferior. This list combines what I am currently listening to in my playlists and my favorite songs that our worship team rocks on Sundays.
You will notice another completely unintended pattern in my list. Two artists occupy eight of the top 10 spots. When I set out to compose this list, this was not my intention, and I said that I would only let artists or bands occupy up to two spots.
If you know me and my personal music tastes, you will see that they are very eclectic, and I have playlists that are hundreds of artists long and thousands of songs deep. However, these songs had to be included in my top 10 worship songs because I often hear them and never "skip" them. And, when the worship team at church sings them, you can hear the words coming out of my mouth (although I wouldn't call it "singing").
10. "How He Loves" - Crowder
A top 10 list for men's worship is only complete with contemporary artist David Crowder's classic hit "How He Loves." Many artists have covered this one since it first came out, and while some versions are a close second, nothing tops the original from the man himself.
9. "House of The Lord" - Phil Wickham
I often hear this song blaring out the loudspeakers on the way into church on Sunday. And when I do, it puts me in a better mood and helps me leave my troubles at the door. It's like a carwash for the soul: the power blasts off the dirt accumulated during the week.
8. "Graves Into Gardens" - Elevation Worship
Check your pulse if this doesn't get you into the worshiping mood. I love this acoustic version, as it is closer to what it sounds like during worship. But it still makes you clap, dance, and tap your feet.
7. "Praise" - Elevation Worship (feat. Brandon Lake, Chandler Moore & Chris Brown)
Here's another song that will make you dance and sing at the top of your lungs. What is it with this combination of artists that works so well? I don't know, but I'll have some more, please. Be careful with this one because you might have a revival breakout at your church or venue.
6. "RATTLE!" - Elevation Worship
Okay, you're probably detecting a pattern by now. But honestly, this wasn't supposed to be all about praise band Elevation Worship. I excluded more songs by them that could easily have made this list. While your worship version will undoubtedly be shorter than this live version, you can enjoy this one and the energy that Elevation Worship puts into it. This is another one that needs to make any top 10 worship songs, as just about every worship team has this one on their list.
5. "Surrounded (Fight My Battles)" - Michael W. Smith
The top 10 list would only be complete with at least one song from the icon of Christian contemporary music, Michael W. Smith. This may be the only entry from Michael on this list, but he has had many hits on many "top" lists over the years.
"Surrounded (Fight My Battles)" had to be included, as Michael has once again helped define the tone and direction of worship music. This one embodies the current vibe of all the other worship songs over the last five years and must be included on any proper list of worship songs for men. After all, there is no better way to fight your battles than with the One who has it all in His hands. Whenever you're feeling surrounded, you can just put this one on repeat and crank it up.
4. "Battle Belongs" - Phil Wickham
This gem by famous contemporary artist Phil Wickham pays homage to our number five song while carrying on the theme of how best to win the daily battles of life. I look forward to when our worship team sings this one because the male vocalist who usually sings leads it correctly. He hits all the notes and sings it exactly like Phil. This is a compelling anthem, and I could see it being used to bring walls down. Phil must have the special touch because everything he puts out lately is pure gold.
3. "Jehovah" - Elevation Worship & Chris Brown
Another masterpiece from Elevation Worship. This one is catchy and one of those songs that will stick in your brain the entire week. Call the name if you ever want to learn some of the mighty names of God while claiming some of His promises.
2. "Trust In God" - Elevation Worship (feat. Chris Brown & Isaiah Templeton)
This is my story; this is my song. I sought the Lord for a great worship song, and He heard and answered with this gem from Elevation Worship. This one has all the feels, and it will be hard for them to top it, but if anyone can, they will.
1. "This is Our God" - Phil Wickham
Last but not least, he's the current undisputed heavyweight champion of men's worship songs. "This Is Our God" is an anthem every Christian can relate to. Clear, simple, yet powerful lyrics drive home the mystery of faith like no other while focusing us on who matters most: King Jesus. We can't wait to sing this on Sundays whenever it comes on the radio.
I hope that you enjoyed my current top 10 worship songs for men. Please share yours with us and let me know who I should have included or who you would have left off.
