Each week, dozens of singles and a handful of projects are released in the Christian Hip-Hop (CHH) and Urban Soul spaces. This Time Around 2 EPby Tedashii Reach Records’ veteran emcee Tedashii returns with the second EP installment of This Time Around, a follow-up to the 2016 EP. Tedashii is one of the founding members of the 116 Movement under the label aside Trip Lee and co-founder Lecrae; a trio of Texas residents. The EP is the outcome of deep self-reflection, a new beginning, and a call to his listeners to witness the transformation that is available on the other side. However, you must be willing to do the work and surrender fully to Jesus.
Four of the included 10 tracks have previously been released. The maxi single “Mirror Talk” included a second track “OBJ” and was released on March 11 of this year. “Respect My Team” featuring Trip Lee and Lecrae dropped as a summer banger on June 24 recognizing the brotherhood of the original founders. “Have A Nice Day” featuring label mate 1K Phew was a part of the 2022 Summer Reach Records playlist which hit the airwaves on July 8. Paying homage to his hometown of Houston and the culture around “Chopped and Screwed” versions of hip-hop tracks, “Respect My Team” receives such a treatment closing out the EP. Therefore, a total of five new songs made the EP.
Standouts between the new tracks include “This Time” featuring Jon Keith, “Holy Ground,” and “Man of the Year” featuring independent standout rapper BigBreeze. “With U” featuring Zach Paradis is incredibly soulful and “Good Love” is quite catchy. Tedashii pulls off a similar energetic vibe to the original ’16 EP as each track bounces in itself and makes listeners’ bodies move feverishly too. Stream This Time Around 2 on Spotify here.
Hulvey feat. Torey D'Shaun - "Closer" A double dose from Reach Records today. Brunswick's (GA) own Hulvey drops his third single of 2022 and most lyrical offering to date. After the track opens up with some deep, organ strokes of keys and melodies, Hulvey hits listeners with four statements about being a disciple. Combined, Hulvey provides a cliff notes version of most of the New Testament complete with affirmations of how God has influenced him and remained faithful through it all. The best part for me was the beat and tempo switch up near the end. Basically, a transition from the streets to the sanctuary. Beautiful piano keys enter substituting the prior knocking 808's and Hulvey and D'Shaun worship unapologetically. The string of three worship-led tracks from 2022 Hulvey has released have been some of his best to date. Ace Harris and Carvello mastered the production. Ty Brasel feat. Aha Gazelle - "Shining"
4 Against 5's Ty Brasel teams up with iconic independent artist Aha Gazelle for a preview of what's to come on Brasel's next album, TRANSCENDENT, coming soon on November 11. I love how dominant the use of soft, melodic piano keys has been within CHH as of late. The touch may be subtle but adds a certain elegant vibe to the content. The track is themed around allowing our faith to shine regardless of the company we keep or the places we visit. The light of Christ shall always be visible in all things we do. The electronic elements and minor autotune hints create a pleasant mixture of sounds to the ears. Dirty Rice and JuiceBangers shared the production duties throughout.
