You’d be surprised how many successful Christian bands and artists come from Canada. Bethel worship leader Amanda Cook, hip-hop rocker Manafest, contemporary icon Matt Maher, and husband-and-wife duo Love & the Outcome.

Love & the Outcome, comprised of singer/songwriter Jodi King and bassist Chris Rademaker, made an immediate mark on the Christian contemporary scene with their self-titled debut album in 2013. Authentic hit songs "He is With Us" and "King of My Heart" captured the hearts of many Christian music fans. That album chronicled their journey of having departed from Canada and risking it all to pursue their musical dreams. The songs reflect the need to rely completely on God's sovereignty to guide their "outcome."

In 2016, the duo dropped their sophomore offering These Are the Days, featuring the hit song "The God I Know." And six years later, the duo released their third full-length studio album Only Every Always. It features “Moving On,” “I’ll Find You,” and “You Got This,” songs that encourage listeners to increase their faith post-pandemic. The album’s music addresses life’s pressures and expresses that true happiness and identity only come from our relationship with God. I had the opportunity to interview Jodi about “Look What God Has Done.”

Please tell me the personal story behind this song.

We wrote “Look What God Has Done” before our house flooded in 2021. We felt led to buy our house, and as I’m speaking with you now, I’m looking out my front window, gazing over trees in a field. I was pregnant with my boy, Milo, when we bought our house (Chris and I felt led by God to buy it). It was the spot where we’d do life together. I don’t know if this has happened to you: feeling when God has led you to a decision where you second guess it?

It’s weird: walking day by day feeling called to do something and having been displaced for a year and a half (I fell in love with our recently flooded field). We started to realize that deep suffering drew us closer to the Lord. Being guided and led by God means we’re going to get through our challenging circumstances.

Because God has called you to do something, there’s no guarantee you’ll get an easy path. We interpret things that way, but that’s not how God calls us to live. He wants us to live by faith. When we get clarity, it can seem like smooth sailing. When it’s not smooth sailing, I’d like people to realize that the challenges could also be God’s plan for you. Rather than think you’re getting it wrong, think that you’re getting it right with God. He does amazing things—no matter what.

What Bible verses connect to the message of the song?

Psalm 66:5 (NLT): “Come and see what our God has done, what awesome miracles he performs for people!”

Isaiah 30:21 (NLT): “Your own ears will hear him. Right behind you, a voice will say,
This is the way you should go, whether to the right or to the left.”

1 John 4:4 (NKJV): "You are of God, little children, and have overcome them because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world."

John 15:5 (NKJV): "I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing."

Romans 8:37 (NLT): "No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us."

Hebrews 11:1 (NLT): "Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see."

Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV): "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

2 Corinthians 5:7 (NKJV): "For we walk by faith, not by sight."

What is the takeaway message?

This song isn’t about great decisions. It’s about looking at what God has done during our troubles. Looking at how God has carried us, as He helps us restore our home. It’s about looking at what God has done with our faith and resilience. God has never stopped working.

This song is about telling people that they’re welcome in this place and that they don’t have to put on their best, shiny, selves. You might not feel shiny right now. Neither do I. But I’m still getting on stage. My pain doesn’t disqualify me, it qualifies me.

Lyrics

My life is evidence
Of all that God has done
I faced my darkest hour
I wasn't strong enough
But He is faithful
This is my testimony
It's one I couldn't write
If I had known the journey
I'd have given up the fight
But He is faithful (He is faithful)
He is faithful

And now I look more like faith and less like fear
Not living in the past now I'm right here
I'll never stop singing loud and clear
Look what God has done
Look what God has done

I've lived through many trials
I've never understood
But pain is never wasted
He works it all for good
Always faithful (faithful)
I have a joy that's deeper
I'm freer than before
Not saying it was easy
But now I know it more
That He is faithful (He is faithful)
Always faithful

And now I look more like faith and less like fear
Not living in the past now I'm right here
I'll never stop singing loud and clear
Look what God has done
Look what God has done
Look what God has done

Look what God has done (look what God has done)
It's my story now (and this is my song)
Look what God has done (look what God has done)
It's my story now and this is my song

And now I look more like faith and less like fear
Not living in the past now I'm right here
I'll never stop singing loud and clear
Look what God has done
Look what God has done
Look what God has done
Look what God has done
Look what God has done

Closing Thoughts

Jodi and Chris impress me with their mature faith and sincere desire to serve Jesus. “Look What God Has Done” is based on several biblical truths, including 2 Timothy 1:7: “For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” I can't get enough of Jodi’s sincere vocals and this catchy, faith-filled song.

This song has a great message and is a cause for us to celebrate our freedom based on our faith in Christ Jesus. The message of "Look What God Has Done" will challenge you to think about your doubts. It serves as a reminder that Jesus calls on us to rely on Him and the power of His resurrection. It also gives you some added reassurance: He has overcome death and fear.

Whatever struggle or depression you’re facing, know that God is with you—always. Step out in faith and trust in God—even when you want to give up or can't see where you're going. We aren't the source of the power to overcome our challenges. God is our greater power source that brings true power. In our weakness, God's strength is perfect. Remember, if God is for us, who can be against us?

Have faith, don't be afraid, and know that with Jesus, you’re never alone. God will show us what He has planned for us. He's the author of our lives and knows what's best for us, much better than we do. The Holy Spirit gives us new life. And we don't have to live anymore with our guilt, fears, or worries.

The depth of the struggles that many of us must overcome, feeling that nobody cares or knows what we’re going through, is something that we can all relate to. For me, one consistent prayer is for hope. I love how this song has that emotional edge and points me to Christ for peace and hope.

Know that Jesus loves you and has something better planned for you if you trust in Him as your Savior. God’s real, He’s near, and He’s just a breath away. What a powerful expression of what it means to accept that God never leaves or forsakes you. He’s all we need. Join in with the band and sing along in faith, “And now I look more like faith and less like fear/Not living in the past now I'm right here/I'll never stop singing loud and clear/Look what God has done.” Amen to that.
