Born and raised in Houston, Texas, emerging artist Davy Flowers currently serves as a resident artist at The Worship Initiative in Dallas, as well as a worship leader at Dallas’ Watermark Community Church. Her music reflects a story of healing and triumph in Jesus. And her passion is to connect broken and weary hearts with the power, presence, and love of God through her songs and worship leading.

Davy recently released her full-length debut, I Was Loved, on July 1. The Worship Initiative release was produced by Shane Barnard (Shane & Shane), with two tracks produced by Bryan Fowler (TobyMac). The release also includes songwriting contributions from such names as Mia Fieldes and Sarah Reeves.

The reflective title track, “I Was Loved,” is a wonderful prayer song capturing Davy’s heart for God, allowing listeners to eavesdrop on her deep thoughts and musings about God’s goodness. Her engaging music and thought-provoking lyrics are something to truly savor. I had the chance to speak with Davy about “I Was Loved.”

Please tell me the personal story behind this song.

“I Was Loved” is special to me because it’s my testimony put to lyrics and melody. It’s the simplest articulation of who Jesus has been for me in the years I’ve walked with Him. One truth that cannot be denied, when I look back through the seasons of God’s faithfulness in my life, is that His extravagant love has been persistent and sufficient in everything in my life. That’s the banner I want to wave for all my days.

During the first few months of the pandemic lockdown, I was fighting to cling to all the things that remain true about who God is in the face of trials and life’s unknowns. As I took stock of my own heart and history with Jesus, I found significant peace in the reminder that His love is overwhelming. And it holds real power to anchor my heart through whatever is coming.

What Bible verses connect to the message of the song?

Lamentations 3:28-30 (MSG): “When life is heavy and hard to take, go off by yourself. Enter the silence. Bow in prayer. Don’t ask questions: Wait for hope to appear. Don’t run from trouble. Take it full-face. The “worst” is never the worst.”

Lamentations 3:22-24 (MSG): “God's loyal love couldn't have run out, His merciful love couldn't have dried up. They’re created new every morning. How great your faithfulness! I’m sticking with God (I say it over and over). He's all I've got left.”

Jeremiah 29:13 (NIV): “You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart.”

Psalm 30:11-12 (VOICE): “You did it: You turned my deepest pains into joyful dancing; You stripped off my dark clothing and covered me with joyful light. You have restored my honor. My heart is ready to explode, erupt in new songs! It's impossible to keep quiet! Eternal One, my God, my Life-Giver, I will thank You forever.”

Romans 8:11 (VOICE): “If the Spirit of the One who resurrected Jesus from the dead lives inside of you, then you can be sure that He who raised Him will cast the light of life into your mortal bodies through the life-giving power of the Spirit residing in you.”

Romans 8:38-39 (VOICE): "For I have every confidence that nothing--not death, life, heavenly messengers, dark spirits, the present, the future, spiritual powers, height, depth, nor any created thing--can come between us and the love of God revealed in the Anointed, Jesus our Lord."

2 Corinthians 12:9 (NKJV): "And He said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore, most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me."

Philippians 4:6 (VOICE): “Don't be anxious about things; instead, pray. Pray about everything. He longs to hear your requests, so talk to God about your needs and be thankful for what has come.”

Philippians 4:7 (NKJV): "And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."

Revelation 12:11 (NKJV): “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.”

What is the takeaway message?

God’s affection and His commitment to His children don’t change with the seasons. And they don’t rise and fall with the circumstances of our lives. Christ has been sufficient and will be sufficient to satisfy every fundamental longing of our souls for eternity. If you can’t look back on your life and make sense of anything at all, the consistent thread that holds it all together is that you have been loved.

I Was Loved is an offering of vulnerability—it’s all the prayers I have prayed for in the past 17 years encapsulated in 12 tracks. I feel more ready than I ever have felt to share the songs of my heart with those seeking to know and connect with the Lord in an authentic way.

Every single declaration of truth on this record I’ve truly fought to believe for many of the years that I’ve walked with Christ. I’ve struggled to believe that the Father is never going to stop loving me, regardless of the rise and fall of my own weak attempt to love and serve Him. Yet, He has set His affection on me and determined before the foundation of the world that I belong to Him.

Our position in God’s family is purchased and sealed by Christ’s sacrifice, who alone is worthy of our wholehearted worship and abandoned obedience.

Lyrics

You’ve been hanging on to me for all my days
I’ve seen your heart
I’ve seen your ways
Right up close and there’s no question

That You’ve been showing up me for at every turn
Never give up
Never relent
With the kind of heart that doesn’t waver

And at the end of my life
When they ask why I was different
I will testify all my might

That I was loved
And Jesus He has always been enough
I put my trust in an old rugged cross
That tells me I am loved

You’ve been holding on to me in every way
With every breath
I’m breathing in
Brand new mercy every morning

You keep no record of my wrong
You know my frame

You formed this heart in the secret place
All this time you’ve been my portion

And at the end of my life
When they ask why I was different
I will testify all my might

That I was loved
And Jesus He has always been enough
I put my trust in an old rugged cross
That tells me I am loved

When all of this is over
Let it said I had a better portion

Than all the world affords
When all my days are numbered
Let it be known that it was only Jesus
Who made it all worth it

And at the end of my life
When they ask why I was different
I will testify all my might

That I was loved
And Jesus He has always been enough
I put my trust in an old, rugged cross
That tells me I am loved

I put my trust in an old, rugged cross

Closing Thoughts

Many of the lyrics in "I Was Loved" give me words to pray: You keep no record of my wrong/You know my frame/You formed this heart in the secret place/All this time you’ve been my portion.” These words are especially comforting as we continue to face this pandemic together.

Worship is about giving God our best and offering ourselves to Him. All we can do is submit and give everything we have to Him. So, instead of running to things that can hurt us, we need to run to God.

When I read the Bible, I’m strengthened with the truth that fear, worry, and anxiety are not God's plans for my life. We need to trust God's Word. Jesus commands us to trust His Word completely—no matter the circumstances. This song is a great way to submit to God and commit yourself to Him. The Bible says to trust in what God says about us, no matter how we feel about ourselves.

God knows us intimately. And, because Jesus died for us on the cross, God sees us as holy, righteous, redeemed, chosen, fully known, and forgiven—no matter what we’ve done. If you've put your hope and trust in Jesus, there's nothing that can separate you from His love.

For me, the most encouraging part of this song is the message that I don't have to be perfect, but that God knows me and loves me just as I am. That’s a cause for celebration as we have the freedom to be ourselves and know that He has great plans for us as His children.

Jesus died on the cross to set us free from the battle of our minds, from sin and death. He wants us to have abundant life in Him. What a wonderful, encouraging truth.

This song celebrates the day that we were saved from our sins. It gives listeners an opportunity to reflect on and celebrate their salvation experience. I was lost, but in 1999, Jesus found me.

I was in my car listening to Christian music. And after I finished listening to that album, the artist shared his personal testimony, which was also my story. I admitted to myself and God that I’m a sinner and that I can't save myself. So, I pulled to the side of the road and sobbed. On that day, God invited me to say the sinner's prayer. I confessed my sins, begged for forgiveness, and accepted Jesus as my personal savior.

I felt God’s presence there with me in my car—and I've never been the same. From then on, I’ve written these Behind these Song devotionals to pay forward the life-giving messages behind the songs by artists of faith. Like Davy, I want my testimony to be “I Was Loved.”

I hear in Davy’s vocals a sincere yearning for God and thankfulness in her heart for God's mercy and grace. So, here’s an opportunity for you to make the choice and to ask the Holy Spirit to live in you. He has the supernatural ability to overcome whatever you’re going through. So, offer your prayers of thankfulness for what Jesus has done in your life.

Davy’s hope is to pass on the life-giving message of Jesus Christ. So, as stated in Romans 8:11, allow the Holy Spirit to "cast the light of life into your mortal bodies."

If you’re struggling with depression, and are looking for meaning in your life, testify along with Davy, and please know with certainty these life-giving words: “When all of this is over/Let it said I had a better portion/Than all the world affords/When all my days are numbered/Let it be known that it was only Jesus/Who made it all worth it/And at the end of my life/When they ask why I was different/I will testify all my might/That I was loved/And Jesus He has always been enough/I put my trust in an old rugged cross/That tells me I am loved.” Amen to that.
