Emerging artist Elijah Waters—pastor, husband, and father—has spent much of his life in a church. He’s also spent much of his life with music. The Washington native has led worship in church for over 20 years (He’s also participated in some recording worship projects). He has a heart for serving others—and now he’s excited for people to hear some new original music of encouragement.

I had a chance to speak to Elijah about his new music and life after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tell us about your upcoming single, “Only You.”

“Only You” was a song I wrote amid the COVID-19 pandemic when we were all stuck at home and in an uncertain and difficult place. I remember feeling so disconnected and alone; I was thinking about how everyone was going through such a hard time. The opening line “When there's nothing to hold onto/I know You are holding me,” sets the tone and heart behind the song in that when nothing is certain or secure, we always know God is constant and close. And cares for us.

This is your first time venturing out with your own music, but you’ve been around music in the local church for 20 years. Why now?

I’ve been writing music off and on for years. I made some home recordings, but I think I just felt a nudge from God and from my kids to get some of this music produced and get it out there. I’ve always been more comfortable singing and performing other people’s music, so it’s been a good “uncomfortable challenge” to sit, write, and create something.

As a pastor for over two decades, you’ve had a front-row seat to a lot of heartache and pain. How is that translating into, and inspiring your music?

As a pastor, I’m meeting with people every day. And I help them through difficult and painful times. I know more than ever that Jesus is the source of true love and true hope for all humanity. I want the message of the good news of His love and grace to continue to be the inspiration for every sermon I preach, as well as the songs and music that I produce.

You wrote “Only You” during the COVID-19 pandemic. How are those themes that were so prevalent a few years ago, still present with you today?

I think we’re all going to continue to feel the effects of COVID-19 for a long time. I hope it has shown us how important relationships are and the essential things of this life. Regardless of a pandemic, the themes in “Only You” transcend time and seasons because we all feel alone and desperate at times. And we need to be reminded of who Jesus is and what He’s done for us.

What’s next?

I’m going to keep writing and hopefully continue to put out more music, one project at a time. I’m excited about some upcoming projects and can’t wait to share them with the world.

How can we be praying for you?

Please pray that I can continue to create time and space to exercise my creativity while also being a full-time pastor, father, and husband. I really feel like God has graced me to do this and use my gifts to encourage others. And I appreciate your prayers.
