Each week, dozens of singles and a handful of projects are released in the Christian Hip-Hop (CHH) and Urban Soul spaces. Below, we listen to a few highlights and list the rest for your own discovery. As always, follow our New Christian Rap & Hip Hop playlist on Spotify and Apple Music to listen to all the latest.
Mike Sarge feat. Shiwan - "The Juice" Honolulu resident Mike Sarge returns with his third single released in 2022. This time, he teams up with prominent indie rapper Shiwan. Sarge has been involved in the CHH sub-genre for the past eight years (2014). He prides himself on creating fun, energetic art laced with the love, promises, and joy found in Christ. High-toned piano keys and strong, deep 808s provide the undertones as Sarge's quick-paced delivery runs smooth and saucy. The tempo flip-flops a bit for the hook before Shiwan enters into a spitfire cadence pleasing to the ears. Shiwan's contribution is playful, yet brilliant billed as one of his best features to date. Jude Barclay x Scootie Wop x BigBreeze - "Wavy" Jude Barclay was on a mission to get his art and name known within CHH in 2021. He literally releases a song a week proving quantity can sometimes match quality when motivation sparks the creation. For his fifth single in 2022, Barclay joined Scootie Wop and BigBreeze for a possible summer anthem. These two indie artists are consistently featured on tracks across the genre expanding their personal skill sets. At times, autotune takes center stage, but such usage only added to the overall vibe. The single is a must add to summertime playlists. Stream "Wavy" on Spotify here.
Naomi Raine - "Not Ready"
Maverick City Music's Naomi Raine returns to the solo spotlight with her new single, "Not Ready." Raine has released music as early as 2015 but truly emerged into the spotlight through the powerhouse Maverick City has transformed into over the last few years. She takes listeners back a few decades returning to a 70s vibe complete with roller skates. The single touches on a topic most people find relatable, depression. The truth is, life is difficult. Life as a Christian adds to that difficulty ten-fold at times. We require that constant message of love, strength, and renewal found in Jesus. Raine relates to the people while interjecting a message of hope and joy found once that proverbial stormy season ends. Stream "Not Ready" on Spotify here.
Joshua Galla is an audiophile hyped about all forms of art in music, but his passion rests behind CHH and soulful vibes. He's a devout husband, father, and child of God. Concerts are his happy place.
