Each week, dozens of singles and a handful of projects are released in the Christian Hip-Hop (CHH) and Urban Soul spaces. Below, we listen to a few highlights and list the rest for your own discovery. As always, follow our New Christian Rap & Hip Hop playlist on Spotify and Apple Music to listen to all the latest.
S.O. - "Make It Make Sense (MIMS)" London-raised, Texan resident indie rapper S.O. returns with another surefire, artsy single for the people. S.O. took to the San Antonio streets in a few promo videos asking individual opinions of the meaning behind the cover art for the track. Some provided deeper thought than others, but the common theme was love. Broken down to our core, we're all just a skeleton clothed in flesh. We're all the same makeup within because we're God's creation and children. Love is at our core regardless of color.
The single speaks to S.O.'s rhetorical question of why we as humans do this or that related to ungodly attitudes and activities. He dives deeper into the wonders of making sense of why men and women of God don't live up to the standards preached. The track reaks of energy, a heavy bass line, passion behind S.O.'s poinant lyrics. Stream "Make It Make Sense (MIMS)" on Spotify here.
Arik Nelson - "Grace" Arkansas-based independent rapper Arik Nelson returns with his third and strongest single released in 2022. His first self-produced track, "Grace" is a certified praise break banger from start to finish. Through a skit, a dope sample, and production brilliance, the track compels an entire congregation of fans to bounce and move their body. The single encourages, uplifts, and creatively displays wordplay worthy of a veteran wordsmith. The chopped sample throughout the track is an entire vibe in itself. This will definitely ride a wave into summer months as a Friday-night banger. Get acquainted with Nelson, as he possesses the momentum similar to a Miles Minnick or Parris Chariz. Sensibilities EP by Danielle Apicella
With influence from multiple genres such as R&B, jazz, Motown soul, and hip-hop, Danielle Apicella blends classic with modern sounds home brewing her own unique art and inspiration lyricism. The New York native combines her love of music, reading, and artistic educational resources to present lyrics in a simple, yet elegant and receiveable form. Apicella exploded onto the music scene in 2018 with a pair of singles featuring CHH artists nobigdyl. and WHATUPRG. Three years and seven singles later, she started prepping for the release of her debut EP.
The first single off the EP, “Cold”, dropped on February 4 followed by “Souls Craving” on March 18. The 5-track EP includes three other songs expanding Apicella’s range, depth, and fan base as people begin to answer the wake-up call of her art and its contained beauty. All the included songs are worthy of multiple listens, however “Cold” and “Her Little Island” stand above the rest. The soundscape bounces between a happy, joy-filled, and vibes of gratitude. She recognizes where her help arrives from along with her vocal talents. Apicella relates real-life situations to God’s way of finding comfort in chaos. Listeners will hear live instrumentation mixed between strings, horns, keys, and other welcomed surprises. Listen to the Sensibilities EP on Spotify here.
Joshua Galla is an audiophile hyped about all forms of art in music, but his passion rests behind CHH and soulful vibes. He's a devout husband, father, and child of God. Concerts are his happy place.
