"Unity," featuring Dante Bowe, is a call to love your neighbor in a divided world. The song was inspired as for KING & COUNTRY's Joel and Luke Smallbone and Dante Bowe grieved how divided the nation has become. The Church is called to lead the way in love and to model what true unity is. As we dive into the lyrics of this song, we'll talk about how the Church can come together within diversity.
Ay-a, ay-a, ay-a/You and me, in unity/Ay-a, ay-a, ay-a/Do you believe in unity?
Unity isn't possible without Jesus. Save us from this madness/Heal us from this sadness/Lead us to what matters/Closer to You
Jesus unites us as believers because He puts His Spirit in each of us, brings us all into His family, and makes each of us a member of His Body the moment we are saved. In that sense, followers of Jesus are already unified, even though we are diverse in spiritual gifts, ethnicity, life experiences/perspectives, socio-economic status, hobbies, and more.
Unity is a work of Jesus that has been done to us. (See Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12, Ephesians 4, Colossians 3) But like the rest of our spiritual growth process as believers, unity is also a work of Jesus that He needs to get through us. We have to learn to walk out that unity in our daily lives. God's Word and God's Spirit give us direction and power to do that, just like with every other area of life.
Colossians 2:19 says that Christ is the head of the body. He holds it together and He causes it to grow as He nourishes it. That means if you and I are trying to pursue healing, peace, and unity apart from the person of Jesus and the way of Jesus revealed in His Word, we won't find it.
We need Jesus to instruct us through Scripture how we should treat our brothers and sisters in the Church. We need Jesus to give us love for one another through the work of the Holy Spirit in our hearts. (Colossians 1:8) We need Jesus to help us focus mainly on the things that bring us together as believers--that shared faith in Jesus--instead of on the differences that can divide us.
Those same biblical chapters we mentioned earlier are full of practical insight how to live together as the people of God. In them we learn how to love, honor, show hospitality, extend grace and forgiveness, use our gifts to serve each other and more. I encourage you to read through those chapters and ask God which of those traits He wants to grow in your life, particularly in how you relate to other believers in your sphere of influence.
Unity Isn't Uniformity Will you walk with me down along the street/Talk to me, tell me what you see/Stand by me, so the world will see/You and me, in unity
Unity isn't uniformity. The goal isn't for all of us to be exactly the same, but rather to love and live together in our beautiful diversity, following the leadership of Jesus. As we pray for unity amongst fellow Christians, and even as we interact with our neighbors who don't share our faith, it's important to understand that we don't pursue unity at the expense of God's truth.
As Jesus followers who are committed to God's Word, it's possible and vital that we learn to love people well, value them, and treat them with respect and kindness even though our Christian faith and perspective might mean that we have to disagree with people or lovingly challenge a fellow believer at times.
Final Thoughts
In John 17, we read the prayer Jesus prayed for unity in His Church right before His crucifixion. This is the desire of His heart: a Church fully formed in love, unity, and spiritual maturity, grounded in holiness and truth. Do you want that for the Church too? For your own life? Why don't you make it a habit to pray that Jesus would do that supernatural work in your heart and in His Church, because it's not something that can be accomplished in our own human strength. But as Jesus moves among us, our Christian love and unity will glorify Him and testify to the world who He is. You and me, and all our brothers and sisters, in unity.
