I've yet again enjoyed listening and worshiping along with my favorite modernized hymns in compiling a fresh list. Also drawing from Shane & Shane's album, Hymns Live, The Worship Initiative's Vol. 21,Vol. 22,Vol. 23, and Vol. 24, and Keith and Kristyn Getty's latest album, Sing! Global, this list is comprised of ten more of my favorite modern hymns, encompassing both reinvented classics and some recently written hymns for the church.
I didn't grow up as a Christian or listening to hymns in my youth; I wasn't saved until after college in my twenties. As a result, I have an emotional connection to the truth of hymns. The truth of the words cut very close to my heart.
I did live my life clinging to something other than Jesus. I did have idols in my life other than Jesus. I can sing these songs with abandon, partly because I regret that I lived any of my life without knowing these truths. These songs are all a great way to sing scripture and worship Jesus in spirit and in truth.
"My Worth is Not in What I Own" by Keith & Kristyn Getty
This song has beautiful, yet convicting, lyrics, "Two wonders here that I confess/My worth and my unworthiness/My value fixed, my ransom paid/At the cross."
"How Great Thou Art" by Carrie Underwood
I am moved by the lyrics, "When Christ shall come, with shout of acclamation/And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart/Then I shall bow, in humble adoration/And then proclaim, my God, how great Thou art."
"Amazing Grace" by Harry Connick, Jr.
Love the truth in the lyrics, "Was Grace that taught my heart to fear/And Grace, my fears relieved/How precious did that Grace appear/The hour I first believed."
"His Mercy is More" by Shane & Shane
You'll want to sing along, "What riches of kindness He lavished on us/His blood was the payment, His life was the cost/We stood 'neath a debt we could never afford/Our sins, they are many, His mercy is more."
"Holy Holy Holy (We Bow Before Thee)" by Shane & Shane
I love the reverent lyrics, "Holy, holy, holy/Lord God Almighty/Oh thy works shall praise Thy name/In earth and sky and sea."
"By the Grace of God" by The Worship Initiative
Beautiful song which declares, "His love is like the mighty ocean/His love for me will never stop/Oh His arms are strong enough to carry me/Through it all by the grace of God."
"Jesus Firm Foundation" by The Worship Initiative
A great hymn which strengthens my faith, "How firm our foundation/How sure our salvation/And we will not be shaken/Jesus firm foundation."
"No One Ever Cared for Me Like Jesus" by The Worship Initiative
Love this profession for the believer in Christ, "No one ever cared for me like Jesus/His faithful hand has held me all this way/And when I'm old and gray and all my days/Are numbered on the Earth/Let it be known, in You alone/My joy was found/I found my joy."
"Holy/There Is None Like You" by The Worship Initiative
Great medley of worship, "There is none like You/No one else can touch my heart like You do/I could search for all eternity long/And find there is none like You."
"Christ Our Hope in Life and Death" by Keith & Kristyn Getty
Stand in awe of Christ and proclaim the truth: "There we will rise to meet the Lord/Then sin and death will be destroyed/And we will feast in endless joy/When Christ is ours forevermore."
