Micah Tyler recently released his first full-length album Different. The title track "Different" follows Tyler's previous success at radio with "Never Been a Moment," a song which had the anticipation for his first album high.

"Writing this record brought to the surface a lot of insecurities I've dealt with my entire life. Not feeling good enough. Psalm 139, David's praise of being uniquely created felt more like a punishment to me," Micah Tyler has shared about the project." I want my life to look 'different' because of the difference Jesus has made. I'm ultimately learning to embrace who God has called and created me to be: Micah." I had the chance to speak with Micah about his stirring song "Different."

Please tell me the personal story behind this song.

I think for me, some of the stories in God's Word that we love the most, that we love to retell to others, are about seeing physical change. Like when the blind man is begging outside the gate and his sight was restored, or about the lepers like Naaman and the ones who Jesus healed.

To me, the hardest stories to accept in church life today are about what happens eternally. The thief on the cross next to Jesus who is saved still dies on the cross. The woman at the well story speaks to me. She is a Samaritan and a woman, and Jesus spoke with her. Jesus told her about everything she ever did and that He was the Living Water. The part of the story that speaks to me is that she dropped her bucket after being out in the middle of the day, which meant she knew she had a scandalous lifestyle. It's not the same as a blind man seeing, or a leper being healed. The woman at the well was called to tell people about Jesus, and that she had a unique relationship with Jesus. People who have been made different need to make a difference.

Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?

Ephesians 3:20-21 (NIV): "Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen."

John 7:38 (NKJV): He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.

John 4:29 (NKJV): "Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?"

1 Corinthians 2:9 (VOICE): "But as the Scriptures say, No eye has ever seen and no ear has ever heard and it has never occurred to the human heart all the things God prepared for those who love Him."

Psalm 139:13-14 (NKJV): "For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well."

Psalm 139:17-18 (NKJV): "How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand; When I awake, I am still with You."

Hebrews 11:1 (NKJV): "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."
2 Corinthians 5:7 (NKJV): "For we walk by faith, not by sight."

Romans 8:28 (NKJV): "And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose."

Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV): "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

What is the takeaway message?

I wrote the song "Different" a few years ago, but I feel like the Lord is teaching it to me in a whole new way right now. A few months ago, we found out that my grandmother has blood cancer. As hard as it's been to watch her lose her hair as she takes her treatments, her faith has remained intact. A few weeks later, Hurricane Harvey came for my hometown. In two days, 44 inches of rain poured on my house. We have been in the process of replacing the flooring and re-leveling our foundation; we keep waiting on things to get back to normal. Then, just a few weeks ago, we found out that my little brother Daniel has stage four colon cancer. After the shock and the tears, my family is preparing to fight by his side as he gets ready to start chemo.

In the midst of all this, the prayer that I kept praying was, "Jesus, can you just change these things? Can you stop the cancer? Can you stop the storms?" But He's chosen not to stop these things just yet. I'm finding out that sometimes the best question is not, "Jesus, can you change these things around me?" but rather, "God, can You change me so that I can handle the things that you're walking me through?"

So I keep singing and praying and believing the words of "Different," because I know that He is changing me. That's making all the difference. In my own weakness, the Lord's strength is made perfect in me.

I don't wanna hear anymore, teach me to listen
I don't wanna see anymore, give me a vision
That you could move this heart, to be set apart
I don't need to recognize, the man in the mirror
And I don't wanna trade Your plan, for something familiar
I can't waste a day, I can't stay the same

I wanna be different
I wanna be changed
'Til all of me is gone
And all that remains
Is a fire so bright
The whole world can see
That there's something different
So come and be different
In me!

And I don't wanna spend my life, stuck in a pattern
And I don't wanna gain this world but lose what matters
And so I'm giving up, everything because ...

I wanna be different
I wanna be changed
'Til all of me is gone
And all that remains
Is a fire so bright
The whole world can see
That there's something different
So come and be different; oh-ohhh

I know, that I am far, from perfect
But through You, the cross still says, I'm worth it
So Jesus beating in my heart and
Come and finish what You started
When they see me, let them see You
'Cause I just wanna be different! ye-ey

I wanna be different
I wanna be changed
'Til all of me is gone
And all that remains
Ohh is a fire so bright
The whole world can see
That there's something different
So come and be different
I just wanna be different
So could You be different
In me!

This is one of those songs that I could instantly sing with all of my heart, soul, mind and strength, and I wanted to know the story behind writing the song. The beauty of God's Word is that it doesn't return void, and it provides a constant source of comfort, guidance and truth of how to us draw closer to Him and live for Him. Whatever your circumstances, you can celebrate that Truth. You may be going through some of the worst earthly things that you can imagine, but "no human mind can conceive all the things that God has prepared for those who love Him" (1st Corinthians 2:9).

If you think about the type of faith we are called to have as believers, it is described as the faith of a mustard seed, and we are called to "walk by faith, and not by sight." God can do immeasurably more than anything and everything one can ask or even imagine, and this song is a true celebration of the great biblical truth of "Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us" from Ephesians 3:20.

God's grace washes us clean in the River of His Holy Spirit, and we become a new creation in Christ. As we look at the fallen world around us, we all need to lift our eyes up to God and put all of our faith and hope in Him. The picture of God's grace being poured out like water is a beautiful and biblical image of the water and the blood that poured out of our Savior Jesus Christ when He hung on the Cross to provide God's riches to us at His own expense. The story of the woman at the well stirs up my soul to think about how excited she was to drop her bucket and go tell everyone in the town to "come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?" Jesus knows everything about us, and His Spirit is the well of Living Water that never runs dry.

Matthew 5 tells us: "You're here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept." Sometimes Christians know facts about the Bible but don't live out the Truth that the Holy Spirit is living inside of us. Sometimes it is hard to believe that God loves us so much that He knows us intimately, and He wants to fill our hearts with love. He knows our brokenness inside and out, and because of what Jesus did on the Cross, He sees us as righteous. God sees us as He sees His Son. It's not our righteousness or appearance or talent or gifting, it is just Jesus. That's cause to reflect and sing out: "I wanna be different, I wanna be changed, 'Til all of me is gone and all that remains is a fire so bright the whole world can see." Amen to that!
