Emotional, Vulnerable, and Authentic | Posted May 26, 2025
What You Need to Know
I'm a massive fan of the southern rock sound of Third Day and Collective Soul, and I've long enjoyed the music of Zach Williams, Rhett Walker, and NEEDTOBREATHE. In that same musical vein, I was immediately drawn to Ben Fuller's music.

His string of hits, including "Who I Am," "Wide Awake," and "But the Cross," are personal expressions of faith about what God has done in his life. That's our irrefutable evidence as believers in Christ, as we share our testimonies.

Fuller's self-titled album was preceded by "If I Got Jesus" and includes the catchy songs "He Got a Hold on Me" and "Testimony." Fuller returned with his recent songs, “Turn” and “Don't Let Me Forget.”

Ben releases his highly anticipated sophomore album, Walk Through Fire, a bold, soul-stirring project that showcases his most authentic work to date. The 13-track album blends country, rock, and classical influences, and he dives deep into the pain that has brought him to Christ: a journey of addiction, suicide, lust, and violence.

What it Sounds Like
Similar to his previous album, the central theme of this release is discovering our identity in Christ, being truthful and open with ourselves and others, and allowing God's grace to illuminate our lives by showcasing how His strength is flawless in our vulnerabilities.

Ben is a gifted storyteller, and, like in his previous offerings, the highlights are found in his vulnerable prayer songs, including the lead single, “Still Jesus.” It is a powerful song that praises the loving and merciful attributes of our Savior. God’s strength is made perfect in our weakness, and that biblical truth is perfectly portrayed throughout this album.

“Deeper Still” reminds me to make Jesus the Lord of my life and for every activity and thought in my life to point to His complete Lordship. “Walk Through Fire” ties all of the other songs together, anchored down by the yearning refrain.

Spiritual Highlights
“Deeper Still” gives me more conviction not to feel worthless or afraid. In many areas of our lives, we also spend a lot of time worrying. We need to let that go and allow the Lord to be our redeemer. We live in a fallen and sinful world. By stepping into the Lord’s ability instead of relying on ourselves, we are empowered by God's supernatural ability. This song has become my anthem, and I sing along at the top of my lungs the sincere and emotive lyrics of submission in the refrain: “Then I found Jesus/At the end of myself/Cause all I needed/Was for my strength to run out/At my weakness He was waiting/To pick me where I fell/His love goes deeper/Oh Goes deeper still.”

“Since Jesus” is a gorgeous offering of praise to the only one who has the power to save. One of the lessons I've learned in life is that we shouldn't wait to fix ourselves before taking a step of faith. Seek opportunities to obey God and offer your faith to Him. Read your Bible daily and get that reminder not to be afraid.

Ben writes and sings his breath, given to him by God, into anointed new songs to encourage us. You'll be blessed by this encouraging song which is a stand-out upbeat anthem with a convicting declaration: “I ain’t ever been the same Since Jesus Ain’t a thing that hasn’t changed/Since Jesus He wrecked the plans Of this broken man Turned a heart of stone to pieces I ain’t ever been the same Since Jesus.”

Once you adopt the words of this song into your heart, you will remember the truth that Jesus has always been, He is today, and He always will be the one who makes a way for us, even when it seems impossible. That's something to remember and rest upon. In any situation, God will make a way for His children. As we look at the fallen world around us, we all need to lift our eyes to God and put all our faith and hope in Him. It's in our weakness that God is made strong. It's only through God's grace that we can overcome our emotional conflicts of feeling invisible and conspicuous at the same time.

Best Song
A soft melody frames the transparent, vulnerable, and moving track, “Turn.” God promises us in His Word that His mercies are new every morning. Whatever situation you are facing, you can know that God is with you, always. Like Ben sings in the song, “Nowhere to turn but Jesus/I turn it all over Let You turn it around Turn it around Screaming my prayers to Heaven/I turn it all over Let You turn it/around Turn it around.” “Black Sheep” is a powerful song that praises the loving and merciful attributes of our Savior as he achingly sings his story and how Jesus leaves the 99 to find the one lost black sheep. God’s strength is made perfect in our weakness, and that biblical truth is perfectly portrayed throughout this album.

Right from the opening notes, you’ll be mesmerized by the melody and message of “If I Got Jesus.” He sings about God’s faithfulness. There is safety and security in knowing our savior and redeemer, Jesus. There’s only one name under Heaven by which we can be saved, Jesus.

This song is a celebration: “If I got Jesus/I’ve got all that I could ever need/Take the world away from me/And I’ll be okay /If I got Jesus/There’s a hope that’s living deep inside/A joy that I could never hide/And a safe place to fall/If I got Jesus/I got it all.”

My favorite song is “Don’t Let Me Forget.” Our position in Christ and His unending faithfulness are worthy of all our gratitude and adoration. The beautiful message conveyed in this song mirrors the Good News of the Gospel: God accepts us unconditionally, regardless of our past actions or current struggles. This is a great song to express your commitment to run the race well as a believer and not be ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Sing along and proclaim these words as a prayer for salvation for our hurting world: “There’s a Savior in my story/Says I don’t have to die/‘cause He did it for me/Now the breath in my lungs sings holy holy/And whatever I do He gets the glory, Glory.”

Final Word
If you like singer-songwriters who wear their hearts on their sleeves and sing about the truth of what it means to walk with God and work out their salvation with fear and trembling, then don't miss out on one of Christian music's most treasured artists. Ben Fuller has once again invited listeners into his story of faith. Ben is one of my favorite artists in Christian music because his songs are so emotionally vulnerable and authentic.

Walk Through Fire is an emotional listening experience. All twelve songs are catchy, personal, and biblically focused. If you liked Ben Fuller, then you absolutely must have this album. I hear maturity in the subject matter with lyrical depth and musical layers that have made Ben among my favorite male artists, along with Jason Gray, Zach Williams, and Brandon Heath. If you are looking for the top male singer-songwriter album of the year, look no further than this stellar offering.
